Our opinion? It's kind of a "shotgun" approach to reporting:

- a crusader from 011 using YouTube to move dope dealers off his corner,
- more Hadiya, another girl killed and the basement level clearance rate,
- McJersey explaining that 200 extra cops has nothing to do with crime prevention,
- the million bucks per week in overtime,
- the rehab and relapse of the white suburban junkie,
- the Hadiya funeral
Rahm get zinged hard as unresponsive and arrogant when CBS shows their reporter at a press conference getting blown off by Mayor Murder. But all in all, there is no focus to the entire report. We imagine most watchers would walk away feeling Chicago is hopeless and in steep decline - not too far off the mark. But 48 Hours reports no solutions or paths to solutions. Not exactly hard hitting reporting.
UPDATE: We should have been a little more specific. The 48 Hours report didn't seem to ask anyone interviewed for suggestions or paths to a solution, probably because that would point an unwanted spotlight at who the perpetrators and victims of 85-to-90% of the violence actually are - the white junkie was obviously a sop to what otherwise would have been an uncomfortably truthful report about the president's political cradle.
We suppose we should be thankful that McGunsAreBad didn't get a chance to do his shuck-and-jive softshoe routine from St. Sabina about government sponsored racist guns killing black and brown children. Or that Rahm didn't get to read his Bloomberg Talking Points memos.

I recorded it, but haven't watched it yet. My comment is only about scc's remark that the piece isn't hard-hitting reporting because it doesn't offer solutions or paths to solutions.
Reporting of factual information does NOT require speculation on possible solutions to problems. That would be editorializing. The two are SUPPOSED to be different, even though we've gotten used to 'info-tainment' taking liberties and mixing the two genres.

After viewing 48 hours report..........it confirmed my thoughts on Emmanuel. Only and arrogant, pompous ass would treat someone the way he treated the CBS reporter. I guess as the Mayor he isn't accountable to anyone! Voters in Chicago need to remember this.

I was surprised they made no comment about it.
They did miss some points. ANyone offer counter points to Rahm/McCarthy talking points? no. There is more to the story than the press conference mayor who is now exposed for a hack running a City he cannot understand. Rahm has failed.
It wasn't even worth watching.
Sub-Par story, thought it lost it's focus based on the title and became more of a Hydea Pendleton story. Her story was tragic and needed exposure but the 48 Hours story failed to cover the big picture with so much left out and so much that could have been addressed and asked. You have to love the display of cowardness of Mayor Emmanuel he must have read Jodi Weiss book "Gotta Run".

My favorite part was when the female reporter suggested that the 200 "administrative" cops moved to the street somehow helped solve the Pendelton murder.
Journalism majors were always morons.
I think the purpose of this segment was to point out what's going on with the war in Chicago, not to plan it's strategies or find a means to it's end. It did a good job of that.
Battles of this war are fought in every big city..Chicago being a hub for the drug dealers just makes the volumn of street crime larger.
Until the influx of drugs is stopped, this will go on and the gangs will continue their turf wars.

The whole report was kind of lame. Who paid for the helecoptor? Where were the police in the whole story? I bet CPD did not cooperate with the story too much. Why show the DEA? Federal agencies have very little affect on daily life, including the DEA. They have about 60-agents in the whole 5-state region the Chicago office's area of operations. The Mayor and the Sup. can not admit we are missing officer and do not have the money to employee anymore, terms like the officer "Surge" of desk officer hide the truth. Where were the courts, corrections, prosecutors, and judges in this story. You can not get much real justice in Cook County and real crime, like the story focus, always must involve murder. For general society and news media the only real crime is murder (another media crime myth). Small problems become much bigger when people can not use the courts.

It was well worth watching to see and hear TD 9.5 lie and scurry away because he was afraid to keep his "promise" to the 48 Hours reporter. That five seconds of tape proves him to be, without a doubt, as we all suspect.
A neighbor told me that Hadiya Pendleton was smoking weed in the park when she was shot. She certainly did not deserve to be shot and die from her wound, but if true, it tarnishes the image a little bit.

I'm pretty sure people see Rahm for being whatever it is that he is but it's kind of like Richie...who are the choices? People feel there are not choices. The main issue is that Richie was allowed to stay for too long--about 8 years too long. And, if Rahm hadn't pushed him out, the sad story is that he'd still be there.

Why is it the Rahm knows this lession oh so well when it comes to blocking the constitution and right to bear arms.
Rahm says go after the firearms manufacturers money -- cut them off from bankers loans -- hit their finances.
However when it comes to the money that is fueling the violence in the city that exact concept is ignore.
This creates a crisis that can be used. The city politicians do not want to correct it, eliminate it. They prefer to monitize it for person gains.

Swindles by the billions in countless schemes during the 2000s related to securitizations and other hinky deals (where despite black letter legal requirements for actual endorsement and delivery of documents banks simply did not comply and now argue there should be no penalty for not having done so, and that these defects are "mere procedural errors" despite intent to not comply.) The result is that our land title system no longer has any resemblance of integrity.
Intentional destruction of anything approaching a "free market" for health care going back 30+ years and now compounded through active conspiracy by Obama and all of the political parties to grant, protect and enforce through government monopolies and cost-shifting resulting in cost escalations of 500-1,000% or even more against market prices and now, with Obamacare, abuse of the IRS tax power to force another 100% or more increase in those expenses down your throat for the express purpose of enrichment of those in the medical industry.
