- Mayor Rahm Emanuel gave a preliminary comment Thursday to a broad daylight mugging on Michigan Avenue this week.
A 68-year-old woman says she was surrounded by a group of young men on the 700 block of North Michigan Avenue and ordered to hand over her jewels and her purse, which amounted to around $100,000.
Emanuel told reporters Thursday that he wouldn't fully comment on the incident until he sees the police report, but he doesn't feel as if there's cause for alarm.
"There are a lot of police, presence on Michigan Avenue and yes, people feel safe because I talk to people constantly who note how safe they are," Emanuel said.
Of course, Rahm talks to all these "people" from behind a wall of 22 armed security personnel or from his front porch where another half a dozen police cars guard the streets, sidewalks and alleys around his house, with a heavy weapons team less than 15 seconds away. That gives him a completely accurate picture of the situation downtown on a daily basis.

Just saw the replay of the Ch5 news...the old lady lied about her $100k loss, but an old man got knocked down the stairs of a cta stop and robbed of his wallet. Two women were robbed at knifepoint tonite, also, but the offender from that one is in custody. The story that followed this one was about Rahn's new arena and Navy Pier spending plan. What a joke.

Ugh...fucking channel 7 news has a commercial touting an interview with the old broad that got robbed....as the news starts the anchors say chicago police issue a statement, and video saying the entire event was false and made up. ANSWER: NO! What for? As long as there's one asshole to eventually send to the call to handle it, that's all we need. And we're the one asshole. That's how the administrators look at it. This is the "strategy" that many police departments are going to now. Hey- it looks good on paper, and keeps these asshole chiefs under budget, making them look good, despite their many shortcomings (being drunk often, beating their wives, shooting at streetlights, etc.).
