No Exempts in DC?

Well this is just sad if true:
  • [McCarthy] hasn't got a clue. He is not respected, nor has he earned any. And he has no respect for us or this department, which was abundantly apparent these past few days in Washington DC at Police Week. About 200 blue shirts were there, 20 or so Sergeants, about a dozen Lt's, and a drove of retired guys including Patterson, Dugan and Folliard, but not one exempt, or Capt for that matter. Not One!!!
We thought our eyes were deceiving us, but we didn't see a single gold star in DC. We saw one of the retired exempts mentioned, but no current bosses. Of course, we couldn't be everywhere and we may have missed one, but this comment and a couple e-mails we received make us think this might be true. And that's just too bad if our "leaders" are so intimidated by McJersey that a representative contingent can't even leave town for two or three days to honor our dead at the National Memorial.

Help me here. Because I really want to understand. In general, SCC spends a good part of its efforts cutting down the command staff -- be it for incompetence, clout or just general stupidity. The majority of command staff, after all, are just clout babies, political hacks who know little of real police work and just cash in on their connectivity and don't give a rats ass about those beneath them. They are not the police. They did little or noting to earn their positions. It seems more birthright than ability, right, SCC?

They sure sound like douchebags, don't they? They sure don't sound like the kind of men and women I would want representing me in our nation's capital during events honoring our profession. Right, SCC?

So, why, then, do we whine hopelessly when the same useless fartbags fail to show up and represent you? Are these wastes of human skin really worthy to show up in DC to represent us?

We detest their existence and wish they would vanish from the earth one day...but we somehow think so highly of them that we would expect them to carry our banner in DC? Ok, SCC, think I have it figured out now. Thanks.

I don't think it was because the exempts don't care; I think it actually is because so many of them are making whatever hasty plans they can to jump over the side of the U.S.S. Chicago! Last one over the side please turn off the lights, and bring those last cans of cat food with you, it might be a while waiting for rescue on Gilligan's Island!

SCC, I was in DC, got there early to salute the family of the fallen. Stayed late to stand at attention (for respect of the fallen and their families). That being said, your statement is true! There were a total of three (retired) exempts, four Lt's, twenty or so Sergeants and a large amount of PO's and retired officers.

I mention this because as anyone who has been there and stayed the entire time knows Chicago PD and the LAPD stand and salute the family and friends of those fallen officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. The LAPD had a Chief, five Captains, multiple Lt's and Sgt's along with many of their officers. Chicago has always been the most represented police department at the memorial but this year the LAPD may have taken over that honor.

As for the person who asked why "do we whine hopelessly when the same useless fartbags fail to show up and represent" us, I say they should show up not to represent us (chicago PD) but to honor (at any rank) those who gave all, for their city, state, town and this great country of ours.

Even better.....CPD Honor Guard didn't go either. Not because they did t want to but because City Hall couldn't get off their asses and approve their travel in time. These guys do a great job and actually spend 12 hours driving to DC and then spend their time there in dress blues doing escorts and competing in the Honor Guard competition. Glad they stood their ground and told the City to pound sand.

Although often times you may not respect the person who is in a position of management or leadership you still respect the position/office. Going out to DC and paying respect to those on this job who have made the ultimate sacrifice is the least you can do if you're in a leadership position of a law enforcement agency. It gives the appearance (whether true or not) that you actually give a damn about the men/women you're charged with leading.

Before anyone lauds the efforts of Danny Dugan and gives him a pat on the back, you need to remember just what a company man this asshole was and probably still is. Even after he got fucked over by the Dept, this rat-bastard came back from retirement and lied through his teeth to kill the ten-hour schedule for POs in the districts. A true company man to the end. Fuck him. He can stay away from DC for the rest of his life. He's not one of us and never will be.

The second post was dead on. Anyone on this job over fifty is talking more exit strategy than crime strategy. When management treats you like garbage, there is no loyalty to the 'company' either. How do I best provide for my family?

I am not saying there will be sabotage on the way out, but there won't be much of an effort to make this Department or City a better place before they go. A battered wife will not make the bed before she runs.

Our "Command Staff" is a joke... Only two people worth anything....... Juan Rivera and Wayne Gulliford. The others are suck ass yes men and will do whatever told to "keep their spot" Juan should have been the superintendent... You have.complete goofs running this department they have zero respect for us and even for themselves, they are.cowards with shit in their blood. What a disgrace to have no command representation at the.DC.memorial. McJersey doesnt care about us he is a.politician/axe man doing what amounts to an accountants job... Cutting costs he could care less about me,you or anyones family. Its about the bottom line ONLY. Sad to say it... Jody Weis was better than this clown if he didnt lie about Cozzi he would probably have been one of the better Superintendents we have had... Gave us a lot of new things and got rid of a lot of bullshit orders etc... He had to take his orders from Daley and yes got rid of too many very good exempt staff but was not his choice...... To his credit.... Sad to have to say.

Unfortunately, it is true. No exempts, no captains. More egregious, Chicago was not represented by CPD Honor Guard. The City has money to build a stadium for a private university, but does not have gas money to send the Honor Guard to DC for the National Memorial Ceremonies.

On a positive note, CPD was well represented by active personnel, retirees and friends. CPD accompanied by Suburban Police, State Troopers, and Amtrak lined the entryway for the Gold Star families. As customary, they lined up across from LAPD when the Gold Star Families exited. The first and last Law Enforcement the Gold Star Families saw was CPD/Illinois. Even a retired constable from the British Isles stood firm with CPD/Illinois.

I concur I didn't see anyone higher than Lt that was an active member of CPD at any of the events. I realize there was a recruit graduation this week but that's still no excuse. The national memorial has been on the same dates for years, shame on the person who planned a graduation on the same day.

As for the earlier poster who stated that why would anyone whine about these people representing us? No one has to listen to any bs when you are standing at attention saluting the survivors of our fallen brethren who feed off of our support. Just go out there and show them some respect, the memorial is not about politics, policies or views. It's about those officers who made the ultimate sacrifice.

It just goes to show you that the exempts have their head up Gary's ass and are too concerned when they will be front and center at the next comstat meeting.

To all the PO's, Sgt's LT's and Retired Officers that were there to honor our fallen officers I thank you on behalf of my family and My Father.

Summarizing some of the above comments ...

First of all, and most important, THANK YOU to those that honored our fallen this year (and years past)on behalf of the CPD. (SCC included)

In the past, the Dept. alternated Supt./1st Deputy annually at Springfield/DC Memorials. This year, notta! City Hall had a lot to do with that fact as was the scheduling (excuse) of the graduation.

The Honor Guard, who had many (full time) 'working' details scheduled in DC, (i.e. Honored wreath laying ceremony on behalf of the CPD in Arlington Nat'l. Cemetery, Honor Guard Competition in which they drilled many hours, mostly on their own time to represent US, posting of Colors at various Gold Star Family functions, Capitol Bldg. and Candlelight Vigil representation etc. just to name a few) did not get Code 49 authorization until the very last minute, which ultimately precluded their participation. Again, this was a 'CITY HALL' call.

As far as Dan Dugan, he has attended the National Memorial every year since 1991. Folliard's attendance also dates back that far as well, regardless of their rank or law enforcement agency affiliation at the time.
THAT in itself says something of the caliber of the man.

To the Gold Star Family member in attendance... YOU are the 'real' reason we attend annually as we hold true to that promise of, "Always Remembered" and "Never Forget." The reason the CPD remains 'to the end' as the surviving GSF depart, and are enjoined by the LAPD, is because we likewise hold true to our commitment to the GSF that,"They Should Never Walk Alone." (Our prayers remain with your family BH)

Finally, while this ("Insignificant") blog site is a venue for CPD to comment on a variety of topics (Thanks again SCC) let us not lose site of the 'real' reason why our members attend DC annually and that's to, "Honor Our Fallen." Please do not let the politics and personalities 'on-the-job' ever stand in the way of our values. We should 'Always Remember' and 'Never Forget' the REAL reason why we attend annually and continue to maintain the esteem and reverence toward all those whom have made the ultimate sacrifice.

May God Bless all our fellow 'First Responders' and may the souls of our faithfully departed, Rest in Peace. Stay Safe.

A brother.

I can also say that there were no current exempt members in Washington this year but I did see the First Deputy in Springfield this year. FYI
