$500 Grand for Felony Murder?

  • A Chicago man with four prior felony convictions and a suspended driver’s license was ordered held on $500,000 bond Monday, charged in the death of a Northwest Side woman killed when the man’s car slammed into hers.

Prosecutors said James Brown, 34, was drunk when he shot a man who he had been arguing with late Saturday night, July 13, in the 100 block of S. Springfield. Police nearby heard the shots fired, and saw Brown leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. As they were pursuing him, Brown allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Pulaski Road and Chicago Avenue, hitting Marisol Mercado’s car. She died from injuries suffered in the accident.

Prosecutors said Brown was arguing with the first victim when he left and returned a short time later with a gun. He shot several times in the direction of the victim, hitting him twice in the leg, Cook County State’s Attorney spokesperson Tandra Simonton said.
And guess what else? He was drunk!
  • Brown has felony convictions dating back to 1998; twice for possession of a controlled substance, once for possession of a stolen motor vehicle and burglary, and once for possession of a firearm, Simonton said. He was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County after the accident, and his blood showed a Blood Alcohol Content level of .190, more than twice the legal limit, she said.

He is charged with felony murder, aggravated battery, and aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol causing great bodily harm. Judge Laura S. Sullivan ordered him held on $500,000 bond.

And all of that merits half-a-million. Even the felony murder charge. A-fucking-mazing.

I know the police all want more money on the bond, but what is the point when the bond set, (it is a 500G D bond) can never be met by the "sheethead" to begin with?

She did her job. She set a bond that is legally 'reasonable" and therefore will not be subject to a challenge or reduction hearing. And it is still next to impossible for this guy to come up with the cash to meet it.

He will sit in County and rot.

Laura Sullivan is a good Judge who will always help the Police...keep that in mind when you bash her.

The bond is appropriate. SCC, you need to re-visit your criminal justice 100 class at Lewis and re-read the purpose of bail.

And the difference with a higher bond would be what? Once you get over the amount a defendant can pay, it's all no-bond. Is this guy really going to come up with $50K to post? No, so making it $1 million or even no bond doesn't change that he isn't getting out.

Laura Sullivan is fair and someone the FOP should endorse in the future. This bond was more than enough to keep this mope, who will surely plead out, locked up. And a great job was done by the officers who nailed this piece of work.

The point is, what does it take for a piece of shit to be held without bond? Does he have to do a home invasion and slaughter an entire family? If YOUR wife died in that car accident, would you be content with "Oh he's a shithead, he won't have the money to get out." ?

Like the time in DuPage County where someone charged with a hit and run homicide in Kenosha -- $500,000 cash bond on the Wisconsin warrant -- was released after posting $5,000 cash on a $50,000 10% bond set by the DuPage weekend judge. The Wisconsin DA and ch. 7 were not amused and neither was THE Du Page SA. Somehow amazingly the bond was revised.

If it were a Copper who very publicly and loudly stepped on his pee-pee in a similar fashion, you can bet a fat woman her ass AND her place in the lottery line that he would have a football sized suppository labeled "No Bond" shoved in his donut...

Look around...

Pay attention to the ongoing war against the Police and anything with a remote nodding acquaintance to...

Justice.

The Presumption of Innocence.

The presentation of facts in their entirety to prove or disprove guilt.

Know and realize where the fuck you are before you presume that the space between how the law is read and interpreted and how the law is applied is full of goodness and purity.

If this judge genuinely has the interest of the people who drag these mutts into a court of law at heart?

God Bless her... She is in the minority of a minority as the overwhelming majority of her peers seemingly have little regard for Policemen and the work they do.

This is, after all, Chicago - Cook County, Illinois...
