Suicidal Firefighter Shot by CPD

At first, we thought this would make the football game and boxing match a little awkward, but then more information started coming in:
  • An off-duty Chicago firefighter was shot by police this afternoon after he jumped out of a car and appeared to point a weapon at officers in a store parking lot in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood, authorities said.

The firefighter was in a shooting stance, holding a dark object in his hand, when he was shot about 12:45 p.m. at a CVS pharmacy at 103rd and Pulaski Road, officials said. The object turned out to be his wallet, according to Patrick Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition and was undergoing surgery, the hospital said. The hospital said his condition was stable. Officials earlier said he had died.

  • Giving an updated version, Camden said police had been notified by the man's wife saying he was depressed and she was worried for his safety because he had a gun. The firefighter was on medical leave and had been despondent in the past, Camden said.

[...] Officers asked him to show his hands and get out of the vehicle, Camden said. The man made the sign of the cross and flung the door open and jumped out with his hands in a "combat position," holding a dark object appearing to be a gun, Camden said.
This guy needed/needs lots of help, and hopefully, if he survives, his Department gets it for him. In the meantime, our Officers need support after this incident, and hopefully, they get it, too. From reports in the media and via the grapevine, there isn't anything they could have done differently. Based on the history and calls, this goes down exactly the same way no matter who was responding.

Best wishes to all involved.

I love that Camden guy. He tells it straight and gets the cops side heard.

Pretty sad that the dept has nobody to talk to press sonce he retired.

And he keeps Ban de Sola in business keeping that killer tan going. Must rub olive oil on skin before heading to the beach with his banana hammock.

As a member of the CFD And someone who knows the shootee I agree that this guy needed a lot of help. I would of hated to be in the position of the CPD members that were there and had to do it. I hope that they don't second guess themselves and that they too seek out help. We were talking at the FH yesterday and know that what was done is what needed to be done at that moment. You have to protect yourself at ALL times.

Don't worry at least at my FH you guys are still top notch and are always welcomed to stop in. Be safe out there and go home in one piece to your family.

Im sorry but suicide, either by someone elses hand or your own & outside of suffering in pain from a terminal disease, is the most cowardly selfish act one can do. Sure, all your misery ends in an instant and the only downfall is the lifetime of pain and suffering you cause your loved ones from your selfish act. Officers, good job on doing what you had to. You were put into the worst possible situation and came out safe. Any monday morning quarterbacks out there, go fuck yourselves.

Prayers to all involved...

Amazing how the police had to make a split second decision and the media reported it correctly and fairly.

When the police shoot an armed suspect the media finds witnesses from six miles away who say that the seventeen year old "boy" who has three previous gun pinches "would never have had no gun"

I feel bad for the officer and firefighter involved. I know what it's like to be at that low where death sounds like the right choice for yourself. And that officer will feel the pain on firing on a fellow first responder who never meant to harm him. I hope both get the help they need.

I wish the fireman well. He needs help. But he put the officers in a terrible spot and they did what they dot do. I wish more police shootings would show that the police had no choice but to shoot the offender. I'm happy the officers are ok.

I gotta take you to task for the first sentence of your post. This was/is a tragedy of the first degree to all involved and on all levels.

I understand that humor, silliness, sarcasm, etc. is in your mantra and also that this is your blog and you can run it anyway you want. I'm aware that I'm free to start my own blog.

But the use, or I should say, the attempted use of humor in your opening words to this post is just plain disrespectful to the whole tragedy. I'm aware that you try to mitigate the attempted humor in the second part of that opening sentence but it falls flat when weighed against the tragic event.

I'm retired 002 CPD from when the District was hopping and lost any vestiges of over sensitivity years ago; but your opening line was truly insensitive.

Rant out!

This happened very close to our house. My prayers go out to the family and all involved. This is such a touchy subject. I was reminded of an interview with Dr. William Walsh, PhD earlier this year. He warned of the dangers of suicidal and homicidal tendencies with SSRI medication in a select group of the population. http://healthy-family.org/school-shootings-in-the-us-ssri-drugs-dr-walsh/ I wish more doctors would blood test patients before prescribing these meds. It seems like such a simple preventative measure, according to the research Dr. Walsh has done over the last 30 years.

God bless both officer and firefighter...in both lines of duty we all have our problems. If its financial, family or personal we all have to keep an eye out for our family and friends. If you see or notice a co-worker or family member in distress, step in and ask or just let them know that you are there to listen to them, it can really make a difference in some ones life. Remember boys and girls we need them just as mush as they need us. God bless CFD and CPD!!!!

PO's did the right thing. As a city employee who battles depression, I am hopeful the Fireman can get the help he needs, but it won't come from his Department. For his sake I hope his name is never mentioned concerning this incident. Why is the Sherlock case not front page news, but this is?

FOP was called within 5 minutes of the shooting, and was out there with two guys in 30 minutes. Frank Di Maria and another guy showed up, and stayed all night. They did a fantastic job.
I get it , you don't like Shields. Maybe you have good reason for it, I don't know. Don't blame everyone else there though. The response department-wide was excellent.

Beat it liberal boner.

If he wanted to do the Dutch he could have pulled into his garage and went to sleep.

Instead he endangers the life of the officers who responded and the citizens in that area.

I guess he couldn't take his strenuous 80 day work year.

Fucking coward.

There are so many things wrong with your response to my post that it would break SCC's policies of brevity to respond in depth to all that you wrote. However, if anyone that reads this blog thinks they have a handle on who this guy is, please try to convince him to seek help through our professional counseling services before his mother finds him on the basement floor after he's eaten his gun.

Nobody needs a handle on me pal. I haven't lived with my mom for about 25 years. I'm as grounded as they come.

This asshole couldn't cope with whatever he had going on in his life.

Fine he chose to end his life. So what does this hero do?
He chooses to make a splash with his death, endanger countless lives and possibly fuck up the mind of an officer who had to put this coward down.

I'm fine guy.

If YOU'RE a firefighter why don't YOU get a handle on your roommates and convince THEM to seek counseling so they don't put the public and my fellow officers in danger.

The next time you're at your house, instead of Netflix and eatin' all day why not have a little counseling time.

This post is 100% TRUE! A completely pimp move by a total sissy pimp! When asked about it, he laughed but never once denied it. The officers from saturation were fantastic, but Sgt., please stay the fuck out of 022. ALL the officers from 022 who were on the scene know damn well what you did and that is UNFORGIVEABLE! Thank GOD nothing happened to this officer.
If any of our bosses had ANY balls, they'd remove you from the streets and put you in 35 th st or wherever because you obviously are a worthless ballless person.

I identified myself as CPD in my original post. Apparently your lacking in reading retention as well as comprehension. You never got my original post and like we were taught in the academy, you don't argue with drunks or crazies. This conversation is over. Still think it would be a good idea to pay a visit to the Professional Counseling Unit.
