Cop Assists in Saving Traveler's Life

  • A 71-year-old man collapsed Tuesday morning while waiting in a security line at O’Hare Airport.

His skin was turning blue. He had apparently had a heart attack.

An off-duty nurse who happened to be nearby performed CPR and a Transportation Safety Administration official helped with chest compressions.

The man collapsed about 11:55 a.m. A couple of minutes later, Chicago Police Canine Officer Pat McGrath, 32, who was on patrol nearby, showed up and took over the exhausting duty of administering chest compressions. An automated external defibrillator was attached to the man’s body.

Right place, right time. The gentleman remains in critical condition at a nearby hospital. Good job Officer.

Great job. I went to academy with him not 9 years yet close. My question is when did they offer a canine test and if they did O'Hare is his detail. I'm not trying to be an ass I'm just trying to figure out how someone with 8.5 years makes canine and gets O'Hare. Cause if I remember correctly the last test was on 2006. I don't think he would be able to take that test cause of time on job. Just curious.

Good job to all involved.

Everyone please watch the training video: HANDS ONLY C.P.R.

Now where are the AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFRIBULATORS that should be in all public buildings.

I've never seen one in a Chicago Police Station. Rahm is too busy buying daffodils for the bike paths.

This type of good deed is going to hurt the city in its latest ranking. EscapeHere website ranks Chicago as #5 worst city to visit in the US. It states that "Sadly, Chicago of late suffers from high crime rates, high unemployment, a series of private home foreclosures, and a loss of the 2016 Summer Olympic bid—partly due to suffering the highest sales tax (a rate of 10.25-percent) in the entire nation." Rahm and McTwitter are trying to get Chicago another # 1 ranking and saving travelers lives when they come here isnt going to get us the #1 ranking as the worst city to visit!!!

To make Canine team or O'Hare : right place, right time, know the right person(s). i don't know of any tests offered. I suggest you talk to canine guys to see if you can get on. also do dog related activities such as schutzhund. just FYI good luck. Not all it is cracked up to be though. Testing inTexas for 6 weeks each year and the dog is CPD or government property.

Hey folks, Patrick is a super dude, a kid gives a fuck and most importantly, a good friend to many. Are we surprised at this deed? Fuck no. Maybe if we all gave fuck about each other and not be so concerned about blowing shit off, this job could be really good once again. I wonder if the midnight desk crew in the 001 saw this article? Or were they preoccupied looking and shoes online, burning incense, dimming the lights and listening to jazz music. They certainly are not giving anyone police service, especially other police members. What is wrong folks?

Wrote two ball-less bitches that don't - and won't ever - have the stones to say this to Pats face.

Family on the job and work assignment/history aside, Officer McGrath's character can be seen on display regularly via his work with the Brotherhood For The Fallen. But you wouldn't know this because Pat doesn't go around patting himself on the back or talking shit.

His unselfish demeanor in the work he does with that charity translates to his everyday life. And the other day that demeanor translated to saving a mans life. That action personifies the Pat McGrath I know. I don't care what, if any, role his pedigree might have played in landing a dog at O'Hare...he's more than earned what he's got. Plus he's got more class and 'Real Police' in his pinky than any anonymous asshole slinging mud about him in cyberspace.

Well done, Pat.

I think everyone is blowing what the person wrote the wrong way. The person did say good job. The poster just was pointing out and asking when was there a test and how did he get O'Hare for a detail. OK great pat is a great guy. And great his father was a prince in 016. Let's asks this. If this was a female cop working canine at O'Hare with 8 years. iIl bet these comments would be bashing her... no time on the job. Her daddy got her the spot. She is a do nothing blah blah. Canine isnt a spot u can really test for. Been on the job long enough to realize that. Phone call plus test. Now before everyone starts bashing this post. Agreed pat did a great thing. And I'm sure he will b a good boss like his dad. But before all that jazz. I think the poster was pointing out how this job has people who r taken care of. And those who are not

Hold the phone. Pat's father retired with the highest rank someone with no clout can hope to achieve and this is your smoking gun. You guys are worthless. He did take the canine test and scored well enough to turn down the position once before. Call the FOP and ask when the test was given. He is assigned to O'Hare because he has a bomb dog you clueless wonders and you will still see him showing up at hot calls. Best of luck blaming the next guy for your misery.

I've worked on a car for a short time with Pat in 25. He's a friend and a great guy. He has always helped with any benefit for fellow police officers and gives his time and money. I also know his father who is a great man and was a great boss. Pat is a smart guy who loves this job. To come on here and imply he didn't earn his canine job is a shitty thing to do. This thread is about him saving a man's life. Don't come on here and rip him to shreds. You have no class and should be ashamed of yourself. Great job Pat.

Too late to backpedal on your original comment douchbag. You're exactly what's wrong with this department. You haven't been on the job long enough to realize SHIT. You seem to have all the answers, but yet remain clueless. Find Pat at an FOP meeting and ask him all about what you think you know about him. Quit getting your information from anonymous cowards posting on a police blog.
