Seriously? Twitter?

Upwards of 70 people shot and this is what they roll out? Oh, and it's an adjunct to that vampire of all CPD programs - CAPS:
  • Twenty years after Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) started in the city, the community-based program is getting some 21st century tweaks.

To “continue to build strong cooperation” between police and the community, CPD is launching a pilot Twitter program that will let officers use the social media site to notify residents about upcoming beat meetings and other important neighborhood events, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said Monday.

Residents will also be able to watch and participate in community beat meetings online, McCarthy said.

“They can submit questions virtually from the comfort of their own home and their computer,” McCarthy said.

The Twitter program is set to begin in the Englewood, Harrison and River North districts, but will then “quickly expand citywide,” McCarthy said.
Yeah, because everyone in 007 and 011 micro-blogs. And we thought one of the purposes of CAPS was so that everyone could meet their neighbors. Now they can just log in and bitch anonymously. Brilliant.

And this is just a scream:
  • The city is also about to unveil a re-designed, more user friendly Chicago Police web site.

To help police better solve crimes, residents will soon be able to send crime scene photographs from the cell phones to the 911 system.

“This will help our responding officers to understand and actually have eyes on the ground to the incidents they are responding to,” McCarthy said
Solve crimes with citizen photographs - how many of these will be admissible in court?

And the "...help our responding officers to understand and actually have eyes on the ground to the incidents they are responding to."  Has there been some massive purchase of computers, software and transmission hardware that would actually allow us to receive this data in the squad cars in real time? Because we must have missed that what with all of the 70+ shootings ripping the south and west sides apart. This is a fantasy, but the media prints it without possibly flagging down a beat officer and asking him or her about the in-car computer capabilities.

And just exactly how are the twitter and 911 crime scene photos texted to 911 going to be preserved for court and tendered as part of discovery????? Let me guess nobody thought of it, will be typical CPD leave the detectives hanging and left holding the bag during trials.

This is the best that the great God of Police from the East can do?

The smartest modern era Police executive ever and the nigh near second coming of Sir Robert Peal?

The man who was going to show us hicks, rubes and yokels in Chicago how he was going to re-boot Policing in this town with New Yawk and Camden, New Joisey as the templates?

He was going to swing his Rod and his Staff while descending from the Heavens with two stone tablets etched with the word "Comp-Stat?"

On one of the early afternoon Ch. 7 broadcasts of the news, they had a story about a couple of d.j.'s from WVON who were talking on-air about trying to get people "to put down their guns" and declare a truce, etc... I don't know the woman's name, or if she was a guest or a d.j., but she said it wasn't a police problem, but a parenting problem, and these parents need to raise their kids to "not act a fool". I was a bit surprised to hear that, but how right she was. Jump ahead to the 9pm Ch. 9 news, they do the same basic story, but they don't air the quote given by this woman. Ch. 9 has gotten so bad with their political correctness, that it's sickening.

Heh, no 19th district CAPS on Twitter is there?

- - - - - - - - - -

via the CrimeInBoystown blog...

"TUNNEY TO CONCERNED CITIZEN: "You're just one person."

We've received lots of feedback via email and in the comments section from our readers who attended last night's Wrigleyville and Boystown police CAPS meeting.

The bold headline in nearly every letter was the remarkable arrogance and disrespect that Alderman Tom Tunney unleashed on citizens who expressed concern about their neighborhood.

Perhaps you would like to send your thoughts to the Alderman? ward44@cityofchicago.org

Compiled from our emails and comment sections:

The first half of that meeting was nothing but a self-congratulatory jerk-off session about how well the parade went with no major incidents. I interrupted Tunney, and ended up in a yelling match with him, and I wasn't about to let him shout me down.

[Another man], who is the president of his condo board and a real estate agent, said the parade should be moved Downtown. Tunney said, "I got maybe four calls after the parade all about traffic...you're just one person," and a lot of people gasped. That set this guy off, and he ended up blasting Tunney about the condition of the neighborhood.

A guy sitting behind me whispered "asshole" while Tunney was going off, and when the meeting ended, I turned and said, "But he's an asshole who always runs unopposed." The guy looked at me and said, "Not this time."

The CAPS meetings are a waste of time, but you can meet people there, and my neighbor and I connected with the other guy who yelled at Tunney, and we're talking about getting the boards of area condo buildings to link together.

In the immortal words of Howard Beal, "First you've got to get mad." Well, people, you've got to get mad. He doesn't deserve the respect.

I was appalled that it was more of Tom Tunney Hour than anything else. How DARE Tunney talk to some of his constituents the way he did! He sure seemed like a defensive guy ...

I found the meeting to be useless. The two people who spoke and made commendable suggestions were talked down to by those facilitating the meeting, and, of course, by Tunney.

WE NEED MORE PATROL OFFICERS on Halsted and side streets. Visibility is key. What does it take to get anyone's attention? A shooting? Another apparent abduction? What?? And that damned "pride" parade needs to be renamed the "shame" parade, given what follows it on Sunday nights every year for the past three years. Too many people are sugar-coating the issue. GET THE THUGS OUT OF BOYSTOWN. Otherwise residents will be leaving for good and tourism will collapse. I really wish I could understand why a meeting like a CAPS meeting would be held, and then we only get lies, half-truths, and rude elected officials running the conversation.

Read the rest of the comments here

The citizenry is getting pissed. Look at the length of those comments and think about the time that they are taking to write about this shit going down -- the arrogance of the political apparatus.

And that assumes your PDT works and is in range, which is a crapshoot anyway.

I realize the effectiveness of CAPS varies from District to District and beat to beat, but in the old 013 area of 012 we have one outstanding facilitator who work really well with the beat cops and commander. (I think it helps tot have a relative who is CPD.)

In fact, I read SCC because my facilitator tells residents we should if we really want to know what's going on crime-wise across the city and the BS cops put up with everyday.

If nothing else, by reading the blog, I've learned

1. It's a squad, not a cruiser

2. Hair gel, Old School and KMA Club are types of cops

3. That under the leadership of a guy named Chalkie, roaming bands of Amish honor students are terrorizing our city

4. My favorite nicknames for the current and previous mayors and Supts -- Tiny Dancer and Shortshanks and J-Fled and McJersey Shore, respectively.

Thank you for my education, a few laughs and most importantly, your service.

Stay safe,

A grateful resident

For the poster who inquired about the identity of the female from WVON,she is Perri Small. She has worked as an on air personality at the station for many years. Several weeks ago, she was on Chicago Tonight for one of their Friday Week in Review shows. As for her statement that was highlighted from the news footage on Channels 7 and 9, she has expressed this perspective numerous times for issues associated with criminal activity in the community.

I for one didn't have a problem with it because she expressed the truth. I was surprised that her statement wasn't edited out of the segments. Unfortunately, for those parents and other adults that truly needed to hear that message from the radio show or television news broadcast will either let it go in one ear or out the other, or just didn't hear it at all.

Build them all the parks you want, play all the twitter games you want, use all the crime fighting strategies you can think of... the only thing to stop rabies from spreading is killing all the hosts. Of course this is illegal as we just can't open fire on all the effed up morons, but sadly this is the only thing that is going to get through to them. You can call in all the shrinks you want, have all the Pastors preach at them, close whatever el lines you want, stop whatever bus service you want, change strategies so many times your heads are spinning and they are still going to want what you have, think they deserve to have what you have and will do whatever it takes for them to have it. Animals. Can't even call them humans. Disgusting leaders in Chicago, egged on by stupid liberals and backed up by the mob that runs DC. It ain't gonna change until the second coming of Jesus. Period. Here's my one constant criticism of CPD: GENERATE REVENUE! You want those 6,000 additional cops on the streets with no dilution of existing pay structures: GENERATE REVENUE! I'm sorry but not every cop gets to be a tac officer busting down doors: GENERATE REVENUE!

I just watched three officers ride through the Clark and North intersection on bikes. They clearly saw what I saw: 1 driver blocking the box and tying up green light traffic (not sure about Chicago, but that's $500 in NYC). Two bicyclists tearing down the sidewalk ($250 each). A cab making a dangerous right turn directly in front of pedestrians in the crosswalk who had a walk sing ($160).

The cops did nothing. Just took it all in and kept pedaling down North Avenue.

Start writing some god damned tickets, reign in the out of control cabbies, get the fucking bikes off the sidewalks, allow a pedestrian to use a crosswalk without putting his life at risk, and as an added bonus, maybe the city wouldn't be so broke and could afford some of the things that you want.

-----------------------------------

Why should we accept that or even last years Chicago homicide numbers as the gold standard metric of what is acceptable here? Why?

Other large cities do not have this problem currently.

If we have 999 shootings in the first six months of next year it will be okay because 999 is less than one thousand? We'll call Garry and Rahm's strategy a success? Gimme a !@#$-ing break.

What is the strategy anyways?

More cops on the street, right? If that's working, the right strategy, then why isn't it being expanded?

Double talking b.s. that's why.

More cops on the street isn't the answer and then put more cops on the street and say that strategy is working. So which is it?
