After seven people, including a 72-year-old woman, caught flying lead in 011, the count stands as follows:
- One man was killed and 10 others wounded from Friday afternoon through early Saturday on the South and West sides.
Fifty-five people have been shot across the city since Wednesday, 10 of them fatally.
Oh wait, that statistic was published by the Tribune at 1930 hours. They posted an amended count at 2020 hours:
- At least 63 people have been shot across the city since Wednesday this holiday weekend, 11 fatally.
And the night isn't over yet. Nor is the weekend - we have all day Sunday to pick up bodies. And not a peep out of the First Deputy, the Superintendent, or the mayor.

As a young policeman in the 70's I had a gun case involving two Latin Kings.
I was as suprised as anyone in the courtroom at 11th and State when a certain Alderman walks into the room and stands up front for a few minutes. The Judge quickly leaves the bench to the back office used as the Judges chambers with Alderman Mell keeping him company.
After a ten minute private meeting the two men emerge from the back.
My Latin King gun case is called, Alderman Mell steps up as council, a few legal terms were belched out, the case got dismissed without word one from your's truely, and everybody involved cleared the courtroom.
I asked the A.S.A. what the hell just happened?
He said. " I wish I knew."
Aldermen are often part of the problem in putting P.O.S.'s in jail.

Some kind of stroke left the last cynical sentence. When I came on I took pride in my appearance too. And I continued to feel pride whenever I put the uniform on for many years. Be true to yourself. If you are a decent and honorable man, you will know what I mean. If you are a deceitful do nothing scoundrel, well, there's no helping you.
I kept my boots shined and always hat black boot polish in my locker plus soft rags and a rack of shirts fresh from the cleaners, with sharp creases etc. Pants too.
We had a department worth the pride then. Even with the corruption and clout, either you did your best or you should go somewhere else and find a new job.
And I never brought dishonor to the star. Others might have, I had no control over that. I loved going to St Jude to pay my respects to those that gave the ultimate. As the years wore on I knew more and more of those people.
The CPD needs bosses who can restore the pride. I f it was within my power, I would not promote to Gold Star rank anyone who did not serve in the military and leave with an honorable discharge.
Ok it's Sunday and more shootings around 47th Wallace and Ashland. Another dead and others wounded. Where the hell is the police superintendent for the past 4 days? And where's our Mayor????? In the eyes of an outsider, Chicago is losing any of its attraction or allure. In other words, I am NOT going to spend money in Chicago.
In this case, his kid is not going to school in Chicago. Say goodbye to the tuition, the room and board and the other money spent by a college kid. Multiply that by several hundred and you get a huge economic impact - a NEGATIVE economic impact.
Someone should be taking charge in CPD and setting a REAL direction, not some political sideshow.

Who in the command staff can step up and take command? Where is the leadership in CPD? Somehow it either walked out the door - or there really wasn't much to begin with.

Oh no word from the Mayor or Superintendent, maybe the Mayor is out of town, in his suburban house (or apartment on State St is it?), or off skiing in Switzerland. Only the Governor has commented on the weekend violence. No other City official is to be seen.

Yes. It must be the uniforms. Or the cars we drive. Then again, maybe it is our stars not being shiny, or our boots needing a higher polish.
Smart, real smart. Sometimes you old guys share something worth listening to, and sometimes you go on about the good old days to the point of just navel-gazing nostalgia that offers nothing but an excuse to massage your bloated egos about every ridiculous and irrelevant memory you have elevated to sanctimonious drivel.
If only we had box chevys and spring loaded batons to go with our gigantic moustaches.

If you think going out there looking like a bunch of mismatched, raggedy slobs inspires respect from the citizenry, you're a fool.
And the concept of a uniform is more than you seem to grasp. It indicates pride, solidarity and discipline.
Not much of that in evidence anymore.

This department needs Marine Corps style leadership, training and discipline. Add to that the public's backing and we'll get the job done. The superintendent must have control over the department. The mayor can not be allowed to meddle with police affairs. To hell with the political correctness as well. The touchy feely police isn't getting the job done.
To hell and beyond with clout. Every officer must put their time in the trenches. End the "management" and "merit" charade. Got seniority? No? Then get back in line. Seeing all the clout babies and favorites consistently taken care of is shameful and demoralizing. It leads me to yawn when the boss opens his/her cake hole to deliver a motivational speech. Puh-freaking-lease! You're trying to motivate me after allowing your niece to "cut" in line? Yeah, okay! How about sending the exempts to leadership school. Perhaps there they can learn a thing or two about legitimacy. From my vantage point, little is legit about assignments, discipline, promotions, etc. Wonder of wonders why you can't get officers to do even the simplest of tasks like write a parker or a contact card.

My wife wanted to take her son to Chicago this summer to check out colleges. That won't be happening now.
