Um...What Now?

  • Though the Illinois Legislature is expected to override Gov. Pat Quinn’s amendatory veto of the state’s concealed-carry weapons law, a separate bill may be introduced solely to ban concealed weapons from establishments that serve liquor.

State Rep. Ann Williams (D-11th), who represents the West Lakeview-Roscoe Village area, said Friday she is focused on the override effort, but she would consider supporting separate legislation to ban concealed weapons from public areas where alcohol is served.

Nothing like broadcasting exactly where the guns won't be....kind of like those "gun-free school zones" that do nothing to protect children and actually attract the clinically insane to an area they can do the most damage without fear of interference.

Regardless, if the property owners so desired it, guns were never welcome on their property anyway. They can post signs to that effect and spend money on metal detectors or x-ray machines or physical security. An interesting legal conundrum arises seeing as how Concealed Carry people assume responsibility for their own safety, but establishments that ban concealed weapons aren't going to guarantee their patrons' safety should an attack take place in their business.

Here is a truly amusing stance taken by the restauranteurs though:
  • Gov. Pat Quinn and Chicago restaurant owners stood in front of Wrigley Field and the Cubby Bear sports bar on Friday to plead with legislators to uphold Quinn’s veto, saying they are worried that people carrying concealed weapons into bars, restaurants and tourist sites will frighten others away and cost Chicago’s important hospitality and tourism industry much-needed jobs and revenues.
But they're completely content to have packs of out-of-control youths running amok in Wrigleyville, beating tourists, stealing property, breaking storefronts, molesting patrons and all manner of depredation with nary a peep in the media nor a few security tapes released on YouTube...and believe us, there's plenty of security video in existence.

The lady doth protest too much.

NRA needs to step it up and continue to sue the crap out of the liberal Chicago and the state of Illinois until concealed carry is allowed EVERYWHERE

The CTA is not safe. We need protection against robbers!

Ann Williams is a bitch. She used to be on the board of ICHV. This is nothing but an attempt to further limit constitutional rights.

Gang leaders have told their politicians that they don't want citizens carrying guns. That's why they are getting out there to violate the Constitution so vocally. They know where their bread is buttered and their votes come from. Corrupt politicians directed by criminals to violate rights. Welcome to Chicago, Illinois.

Williams was one of the 28 that voted NO on HB183, the concealed carry bill, not one of the 89 that voted yes.

The CTA is where concealed carry is needed the most, especially the red line, yet the new law doesn't allow it.

An issue I see is: if Zimmerman is thrown to the wolves, few people will want to try defending themselves knowing full well they will be railroaded no matter the circumstances.

More people have died in gyms, handball courts and running tracks than have been shot in taverns. Ban those damn joggers.

Ignoring the absurdity of Illinois and Chicago in particular, many states seem to not want concealed weapons in bars or sports arenas. I understand why they feel this way, but it ignores a critical part of the situation; not everyone drinks. Why shouldn't a group of friends be able to designate a sober individual to drive as well as carry? Just because I'm in a bar doesn't mean I'm drunk.

Even in Arizona, where open carry was legal forever and who now have a concealed carry law, an establishment can ban guns on its premises at any time, for any reason.

It doesn't have to be legislated in as anything except a proviso for the carry law stating that it is up to a business to ban guns if they so choose.

So long as you're not drinking alcohol, concealed carry ought not to be restricted wholesale.

Lots of LEA's say "You can carry, but you can't drink one drop of alcohol...".

What's wrong with that? Crime magically doesn't happen in bars or restaurants so we don't need CCW there?

Bullshit. It's all about designating "sensitive areas" and continuing to expand and expand...

Fuck Potatohead and the rest of the Dumbocraps...vote em out

I would have no problem with a law akin to drunk driving for those who carry while intoxicated. Carry while drunk, go to jail. (you are a danger to yourself and others)

I came on the job in the late 60's and even then it was against the law for anyone but the owner to have a firearm in a bar. AFAIK, it still is.

THAT law has worked so well, I cannot see what the uproar is about no concealed carry in taverns is all about.

If Potato Head's and the Demorats voting block could only read the law, maybe it would be effective; but they can't and they won't.

Some politician should read the Illinois Liquor Code. It is already against the law to have a gun on a liquor licensed premises.
