Back to the Way it Was

  • Eighteen-year-olds will be able to take the Chicago Police Department exam under a change designed to increase the pool of eligible applicants and boost diversity, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned.

In 2010, then-Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis raised the application age from 21 to 25 to attract a more mature crop of officers.

But Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy has decided to drop the application age to 18 and set the age to become an officer at 21 — the minimum hiring age in other major cities, like New York and Los Angeles. Applicants can take the police exam in New York at age 17 ½ and at 20 ½ in Los Angeles.

Weis probably figured since he never saw any young FBI agents, that they must have matriculated, fully grown, well seasoned and worldly experienced from the secret FBI recruiting farms. Nobody told him that a sizable percentage of the FBI is made up of former cops who got hired somewhere else, then looked to expand or advance their career credentials by spending some time with the federal government. That would be very typical thinking by Weis that the provincials out in the sticks don't really amount for much.

As pointed out here years ago, who would want to go to four years of college, start a career for three years (seven years if you skipped the college) before even being eligible to be hired by Chicago, and then be subject to the political whims of the likes of Weis? And more than likely, for a cut in pay?

Of course, Ladner will fuck this up, too.

I like the part where Weis commented about how he would like a "real screening test", not one with a 93% passing rate.

Nice idea but it will never ever fly.

The written test has to be so simple so that the "socially disadvantaged" can pass it.

Otherwise the test will be considered racist.

Hell, CPD could try becoming a destination department for laterals. Of course, they'd probably need to quit fvcking with the pension and I wouldn't come back to Chicago unless the job let me live in Indiana.

It's interesting that you have alot of Police Departments for instance in the Northwest suburbs that require a four year degree. They have no problem attracting quality applicants. They pay well, equip and train their personnel professionally....Guess this shows how hard up CPD is, now we are taking kids fresh out of high school...that is if they finnish. Guess a GED would be enough..

Once they come on the job, can they still get promoted even though they might be a moron but with heavy connections? That is the important part, if they still can get merit promoted once or multiple times. The sooner a Son of a Supervisor is hired, the sooner he is promoted and can move on up the ladder.

If this "diversity" turns out to be products of the CPS educational system, there's a good chance we'll be seeing anywhere from 7th to 12th grade "students" applying.

Unfortunately it is true for new po's hired after Jan 1, 2011. House bill 3813 states you have to retire at 55 or be penalized for every month before. When I came on it was 59 with a penalty for early retirement, but 3813 changed all that. Any FOP website was not referring to new po's
The following is from HB3813 which spells it out and includes the last 8 years averaging instead of 4. Only included the 5 or so pertinent paragraphs

A police officer age 55 or more who has 10 or more years of

You bitter and jealous types are just ridiculous. I'm a cop with a master's degree, the son of a cop with no degree. I got a friend I grew up with, same story. Any moron knows that school and degrees do not make you smart. That same moron also knows that 20 years of pushing a beat car don't make you a leader or a great cop. Some guys have decades of experience but can't lead to save their lives. Some got college degrees but can't find when/where to apply what they learned. You'd think joes would look forward to the days when young guys had the whole package because it will benefit the department as they develop, namely the guys under them. I didn't even learn leadership being the police. That came from the military and they push education there. I've always encouraged my guys under me to take it one step further. I can get hurt on this job, God forbid, and still bring home money off of it by teaching law enforcement classes at a community college etc. Most of the bosses you complain about and the people who can actually make decisions that affect day to day police work have those "smart papers." I'd rather get them and try but fail to make changes than never get them and just complain about what other people (bosses, supt, Rahm) are doing to me. Wait?!?!?!? Isn't that the gimme, entitlement, welfare mindset we're always talking about, where self-development and self-initiative is discouraged. See, you think just like the people you lock up.

When Harold Washington College was involved with training at the Academy, they used to give a test to all new hires. It was called the Nelson/Denny test.
That test guaged the reading and comprehension levels of the recuits.
The low end of the scale was 2.8 grade level and the high end was grade 16.
As I recall, most recruits would score about the 8/9th grade level. Of course there were always (with every test) those that scored a bit higher and lower but no one ever scored at a 16 grade level.

So, even all those years ago the CPD did not get the brightest recruits.
