Hey Look, Fourth of July Wilding Coverage

  • Two men are accused of robbing people of iPhones during separate incidents on the Near North Side during the night of the July 4th fireworks, police said.

Quejuan Henley, 18, and Harold William Cherry, 25, were both charged with felony robbery, police said.
  • As real estate broker Gary Dailey made his way through the throngs of people gathered on the Gold Coast lakefront Thursday night to enjoy the fireworks, what was initially all about families, children and the Fourth of July changed into something else.

Dailey, 51, on his way to meet his girlfriend near a "quiet crowd" of children and adults, was confronted with something less quiet – a large, noisy group of individuals crowded into the center of a tunnel that led under Lake Shore Drive near Division Street.

"They were screaming and yelling and scaring everybody," said Dailey, indicating that there was a crowd of about 40 people backed up while the rowdy group was "roughhousing" in the center of the tunnel.

  • One of the rowdies tried to take his cell phone but he "slapped his hand down." Then he heard a woman behind him scream and turned to look, seeing a woman with a child about 12-14 feet behind him who was being accosted by a man wearing a red shirt.

"The gentleman in question grabbed her hand and was kind of twisting it," Dailey said.

The woman screamed, "You (son of a -----), you're stealing my phone" before throwing a water bottle at the man and taking off after him as he ran away with her phone, a police report on the incident said.

The red-shirted man headed in Dailey's direction with the woman in pursuit until someone else -- an unknown co-offender according to the police report -- tripped her, Dailey and police said.

"He started running toward me and he ran up to the stairs and I decided I was sick of it," Dailey said.
He was sick of it and got involved. People like this make a community work. They are the glue that make a community. Now compare that to the post we published right below this one. Night and day, isn't it?

Getting involved was stupid and selfish. How did he know whether the alleged perpetrator may have had a weapon. What good would it do his family if he is injured or dead instead of a 'hero?" The proper thing is to find the police and let them know what you saw; don't try to be a hero.

I was there on scene. Although we were able to get 1 offender, at least 50 others got away. We were woefully undermanned for this event. It was dangerous for the good citizens who came down as well as the Police trying to protect those citizens. Like the Sgt who said I have 100 gang bangers heading toward Oak Street beach, stop them from coming through the tunnel......There are only two of us sarge, not going to happen.

well they all don't turn out that way. Shit the city propaganda has everyone fixated on homicides they forget about the other crimes.

It's bad enough to get jacked up while waiting for the CTA but then to wait over 30 mins for the cops to show?! Are we suppose to take off work and lose our jobs over this b.s too?

No wonder non-violent crime is being reported down. DOWN MY ASS!

Chicago Police Department Case #HW351540

911 received a call at 5:35 this morning of a phone being stolen at the Belmont L station, 945 W. Belmont. Unfortunately, no officers were available to take the call, giving the perpetrators a 30-minute head start on their escape before police started working the matter.

According to the female victim, two male blacks distracted her while a third male black, 6' tall in his early 20's wearing green shorts, wrestled her phone away and fled northbound in the alley that runs parallel to the train tracks. The incident has been classified as a strong arm robbery.

Almost exactly two weeks before this morning's robbery, at 5:10AM on Sunday, June 23, two young men chased down two cell phone thieves along side the same L station, detained them, and called 911. The police never responded to their call because no officers were available. As the two victims waited for the police who weren't coming, a mob formed, and the victims were severely beaten and cut with broken bottles.

Fortunately, this morning's incident did not escalate while the victim waited for an officer to become available

Two things stood out for me watching the video interview with him on breaking news: in his descriptions of the "group of teens" he chooses the politically correct path by leaving out their skin color, and he said he tried calling 911 but no one answered the phone, probably due to their being "busy."

SO you can't call 911 and don't mention race. Got it.

At least he was "tired" of it and decided to step up. When more citizens downtown step up, fight back, testify, and sign complaints, the sooner downtown will be safe again.

please share this SCC, this is what happens when people "get involved" It makes a difference. How many lives(plural) saved. Shame on CNN for interviewing the dumbest MOFO onscene to end the article..hell its still atlanta....at least someone decided not to be a VICTIM.....QUINNER? YOU READ THAT?

Atlanta (CNN) -- A man, who tried to rob a group of people waiting in line to buy the new $180 LeBron James sneakers, was shot and killed when one of the customers pulled out a gun, Atlanta police said.
The incident took place before dawn Saturday outside a shoe store in Atlanta's Little Five Points area.
The group was waiting for the store to open for the day so they could buy the LeBron X Denim on its first day of release.
Police said the man approached the group with a gun in hand and tried to rob them.
One of the men in the group took out his own handgun and fired, said Atlanta police spokesman Carlos Campos.
"A number of witnesses were interviewed and this appears to be self-defense," he said.
Campos said the customer was not charged.
Another customer in line, Taylor White, told CNN affiliate WSB-TV that the would-be robber should have thought twice.
"I didn't even expect him to come up here, thinking it was that sweet. Thinking it's that candy land like that," White said. "He wanted to pickpocket everybody. But people out here, they weren't going for none of that."

Well, finally some news. My husband and girlfriend walked through that tunnel right after the fireworks were over, and I had a terrible feeling in there - it's an awful trap. Some police came through and pushed through the crowd, and then we got out onto Lake Shore Dr. and saw them arresting a man - cuffing him. I had said that we should get through there right after the show was over. We watched the police cars show up from the windows of our condo afterward, and were surprised we never saw a . single . word. in the media. Pitiful.

I've lived here all my life and I've never been afraid of going downtown nor will I ever be afraid. I am down there every day for work and in the related environs including North Michigan Avenue, etc. No fear at all. In fact very little ever happens. And when it does, some of us will make like this Dailey guy. We will not sit there and take it. We may even whoop a little ass. Non-bad guy citizens should carry guns regardless of the law. Bad guys carry guns, and they shoot at each other, and sometimes they wound each other, and the police capture them and investigate and present the case to the states attorney. And the states attorney refuses to charge any of the bad guys calling it 'mutual combatants' or 'self defense'. So what difference does it make???

There's nothing "heroic" about it. If the police can get there in time to do something, fantastic, but until they do, citizens have the same responsibility and duty they do.

The only thing that will put the fear of God in these bastards is the knowledge that not every sheepdog wears a uniform and a badge and has a gun in plain view.

Needed police help 4th of July night about 9:30-10ish. I called 911...it rang...and rang....and rang...and rang....for quite some time until someone actually picked up the phone. Thankfully my issue wasn't life threatening. After I talked w/ the call taker, my issue was dispatched about 40 minutes later....and then they gave out an incorrect address. For nights such as the 4th when it should be expected to be busier, 911 call center should be staffed appropriately and get the details correct. It could be a matter of life & death. Thankfully my family and I are all okay.

I hope you are not the 'police'.

Q: Are you an idiot?

Q: If someone commits a strong arm robbery, is that justification to shoot them?

A: If you are in fear of great bodily harm or death, then, yes, yes it is. Just what do you imagine experiencing being the victim of a 'strong arm robbery' to be? Sorta like wrestling with your sister when you were both pre-pubescent?

Q: When can you use deadly force as a police officer?

A: Why don't you become a police officer and find out?

Concealed carry. Today Quinn's changes will be overridden and the governors field will open up to downstaters because the Chicago Democrats are all gun-control goofs. That doesn't play well with downstate Democrats who do not pander to the Chicago rev'runs and squeamish liberal gun fearing socialists.

By the end of today we will have a workable concealed carry bill and soon these savages will face JHP's in their face when they go to rob someone.

speaking of wildings... does McCarthy think that disbursing 500 screaming kids every weekend at 5 or 6PM is a good idea? Does he think citizens are that stupid and don't notice? Does he really only think tourists' opinions are what matter? The last three weekends I've seen hordes--literally hundreds--run down north avenue screaming and hitting on cars, causing traffic to come to a standstill... hitting on each other. banging on cars, causing actual damage. Two weekends ago I saw about 10 people run ABOVE the bridge across LSD in full traffic on actual LSD.

This is not a crime fighting technique. Just because you don't see them where you are doesn't mean they have gone away.

Police sit at the outskirts of North Ave beach parking only 100' east... why no response? people aren't stupid.

I was very close so I could see that he was not carrying a weapon so I gave chase. It was my intention to stay as close to him as I could until the police would arrive to arrest him and then I could indentify him.
