DePaul Stadium a Done Deal

Not "done" as in guaranteed to pass the City Council - we mean "done" as in it passed a week ago and nobody seemed to notice.  Ben Joravsky strikes again:
  • In the dead of the night, when everyone was sleeping, the Chicago City Council, acting at Mayor Emanuel's command, unanimously voted to take tens of millions from your dead-broke schools and spend it on the DePaul basketball arena and a hotel.

OK, so the dirty deed didn't really happen in the dead of the night. It was sometime in the afternoon of the July 24 City Council meeting.

I got dead of the night on my mind 'cause you have to harken back to Mayor Daley's predawn raid on Meigs Field to find a more brazen assault on the concept of democracy. No discussion. No debate. No analysis. Just do what the mayor says.

Actually, in some ways Daley's Meigs Field raid was less troublesome than last week's looting. At least Mayor Daley was planning to turn private land into public space.

In this case, Mayor Emanuel's throwing away millions of public-school dollars—might as well just burn the loot.
The vote went down a little like this . . .

Alderman Ray Suarez—chairman of the council's housing committee—announced that he had a committee report ready to be approved.

One of the items in the report was authorization to buy land for the DePaul basketball arena/hotel—though Suarez didn't mention that.

    Mayor Emanuel said, any objections?

And before any alderman could think—much less talk—down went the mayoral gavel and out the window flew at least $55 million of your property tax dollars taken from the good old TIF slush fund.
Another stunning example of "Chicago-style democracy" at work.  Meanwhile, pensions are criminally underfunded and cuts to services abound while the cost of everything is rising. And the media is asleep or playing car-bingo while Rahm drives Chicago over the cliff.

Un-fucking real. You don't even get a whiff of this story in the Trib or Suntimes. Not even a bullshit fluff piece about "how great" it will be. This city is really starting to blow. So ready to get out of here, and I'm only 30. Currently a CPS teacher, ready to throw in the towel and pull what I have in my meager pension and start over somewhere else. Schools sure aren't getting better anytime soon...teacher morale sure ain't going up anytime soon. This year it was the elementary schools, next year will be the high school crisis, then the year after that it will be another budget crisis. So far in my 9 year career at CPS, there has been a crisis every fucking year.

I object. Completely. Shame, shame, shame on you, mayor. Why are we imposed upon to financially support De Paul's basketball arena? I give a damn about basket-ball. So, many of us have paid via taxes for public schooling, whilst we paid out of pocket for private schooling because our public school system is one of, if not the worst, in the nation. Now we have to pay so De Paul can have a basketball arena. This shit never, ever seems to end. I can't wait for this guy to be gone.

    This is absolute bullshit.

The depth of corruption and media/ public disinterest is so great I'm not even sure there's an option other than bend over and take it like a man. This city is like a g-damn ATM to the power brokers. But I suppose since the voters don't seem to care why shouldn't they keep stealing.

It's too bad the media had it's teeth pulled by corporate consolidation and the shareholder driven bottom line as ultimate concern. There was always some city hall control but now there aren't even real reporters to cover let alone investigate these ethical issues. Hell even Andy Shaw and his BGA (I suspect he gets some marching orders from on high since he'll take down a racist cop blog and a middle level city patsy or a suburban police chief but never gets around to the money laundering through an ex-mayor's dead wives' charity)have to train volunteers to attend different committee meetings bc the media no longer sends anyone. They don't have the staff.

Summary... we let them steal with both hands. How about a little voting booth rebellion and get it down to one handed stealing? Too much to ask? Probably.

You see bums begging for money and guys walking up and down the street soliciting weed. Right in the open, they walk down the street and say "weed, weed, I got me some good weed".

I saw two very attractive girls walking down the street. Two savages tried to talk to them. The two young ladies politely said "have a nice night ok" and walked away. The two savages then kept following them and trying to talk to them. The two girls went to a bar and guess where the two savages went? Into the same bar still trying to talk to the two girls.

Last night on Chicago Tonight Alex Holt city finance director stated there was over 600 million in reserves still left over from the Skyway and parking meter deals. Yes, I also thought that money was gone. I couldnt believe what I was hearing. She also said Midway airport is probably going to sell probably for 2-2.5 Billion. Ms Holt also stated that revenues are up over what was budgeted because real estate sales are up. Thats about 4.5 Billion dollars old Rahm has stashed away. We need to stop saying the city is broke. That is what Rahm wants us to believe. Its contract and pension reform time so the city has to be broke. The city is projected a 339 million budget deficit and 1 Billion pension deficit next year. The city can pay this off and balance the budget and still have over 3 Billion in reserves. Rahm just does not want to. So PLEASE stop saying this city is broke. Its a SCARE tactic.

Haven't we learned yet about the selling off of PUBLIC assets.?.. Parking meters, skyway, the midnight destruction of Meigs in the :Daley regime.... All now saying a very bad move. Now Rahm duplicates the same thievery. And the media is SILENT and doesn't even challenge this and the same alder thieves approve this nonsense. un#%ing believable.

It's not DePaul's Arena. They have to pay rent for every event they want to have their.

Mayor Daley read the above post and wrote... "They're (sic) ya go scrootin' DePaul again."

Isn't this unconstitutional, separation between state and church. If I could not write off my kids tuition given the same government arguement; why doesn't the ACLU try to intervene on tax dollars being used to finance a church facility? No one is outraged. The rape and pillaging of this city by these carpet baggers is reprehensible. They will continue picking at its carcass then flee Detroit Style.

If its true DePaul doesn't own the facilities, the fact eminent domain is being utilized to expropriate private properties to build the facilities for the benefit of the school is in my opinion an overreach of power, tax payer funds and yes unconstitutional
