PPO Assignments

Word is that some "heavy" people weren't happy with the district assignments given to certain PPO's, so you know what happened next.

The list that came out Thursday was canceled.  The new list came out Friday in the late morning with a whole lot of changes.

Welcome to the Department kids. Twenty years and maybe a pension. Good luck.

Of course. Why would you expect anything less. I've never seem so many things issued, and then recalled, rescinded and redone than in the last few years. Got some real sharp people doing things down there.

Slightly OT: I always wonder when they announce some moves and then pull them back if they aren't just putting out trial balloons. Did all the shots taken at Barb West and her seemingly inferior qualifications for running the Academy influence 35th Street to find someone much more competent? Are they following the blog to get answers they wouldn't get otherwise? I believe this blog has great power, but with that power comes great responsibility. You've done an excellent job with this, but I wonder if at times this is too much of a burden on just one person? Thanks for being there SCC, but better you than me.

No surprise. OT: Looking for vets knowledge/opinions. PO with only a few years on, trying to figure out this goddamn system. Do bids EVER open up in this department? I got stuck in a retirement district and I want to work. I have no time to go anywhere west side, so I'm ready for 007. Is there ANY rhyme or reason to when vacancy lists come out, and what districts are open??? Because I sure can't figure it out!!!

These kids spent 7-8 months on FOOT patrol, walking in 003,006,007 etc.
Some were involved in shootings, almost run down by a car, had their DOG changed with 12 hour notices, forced to WALK back to the district to check off because their SGTs were too fucking lazy to come pick them up etc.
And how are they rewarded? By having the majority assigned to 007 & 003 & 011 to finish of their final 2-3 months of probation.

It's a shame what has happened to this department.
Also, a big fuck you to the guys who are saying " oh fuck them, they're PPOs....deal with it"
I don't know of ONE PO who walked for 6-7 HOURS in the GHETTO in 100 degree weather and 25 degree weather.

Good luck to you PPOs who are finally done with this nonsense and GOOD JOB.
Please welcome & help these guys in their new districts because these kids have put their time in and more.

Even better try to explain how you put a lieutenant in Captains training only to promote him to Captain 10 days later. What you didnt know a weeks ago he was next to be promoted.

There was a time on this job when they generally kept you reasonably close to home.

What did you expect. It all starts with the hiring process. They been screwed with since day one. Announcining power tests than rescinding them. Pushing back hiring dates. Hell name one other department or any job for that matter where you entrance test score has nothing to do with your qualifications and rankings. THE CPD is the only department and it shows in our recruits. We get some of the bottom of the barrel. Only place where it's a lottery from day one where the city can pick n choose who they want to hire first with scores having no bearing on ranking. It's merit from day one and is merit there at of their entire career. GET USED TO IT.

It's the same thing every time a list comes out. They used to just hide them with detail assignments. Now they don't even care who knows. They pull down lists and start over.

Anyone thinking these kids humped and deserve a better spot is on crack. No where in any of the districts did the walk for 6-7 hrs. PERIOD. Were they treated like garbage? YES. Was it the most unsafe assignment ever in Ppo history? YES. Did they learn anything ? NO. Are they ready to ride in a beat car? HELL NO. 3 ppo's per FTO is a joke. There is no way to teach them anything in that environment. One guy writes a report or tic test while other 2 sit n do nothing. GREAT TRAINING.

Anyone taking this job needs their head examined. Go to the burbs. They pay more and their pensions are not in trouble. Problem is over half the flunkies and rejects they hire here wouldn't pass day one in the burbs.

Keep quiet and stay in the retirement district kid. STAY IN THE RETIREMENT DISTRICT. And to answer your question...no there's no rhyme or reason on this department, period. Get used to it. Question on the sergeants test today :
Why do all of the "Merit" promotions come from the back of the test list?
Chicago is the only place in the United States that promotes candidates from the rear of the test and not the front and some get these promotions 3 times!

I totally agree. We were ALL PPOs at one point. Just because the city is phucked up does not mean we should be. Can you imagine if one of these heavy bosses had to do foot patrol in the ghetto when they were a PPO? Always a double standard.

But anyway, we all need to take care of each other. Lets look out for each other. All we have is each other when the shit hits the fan. Now with that said a big FU to Rahlm and the City.

To: no surprise, there is no such thing as a "retirement district" anymore. Make the best of where you're at till you can leave. There is bad spots in every district. Figure out who wants to work and talk to them or the watch secretary. It shouldn't take long to figure out who the workers are. A good police officer can find "dirty" people anywhere. Even in the slower districts. It just takes a little effort. Anyone can find dope in the ghetto. It takes a little more work to find it in...lets say 019, 020, 016, 017. But don't kid yourself. It's everywhere.

Fck the PPOs. When I was a PPO and a year or two after, we were rotated between midnights and afternoons, and they changed your day off group every period so you would not get weekends off. Then as a bonus, you got to work with all the screwballs, drunks, and dogs. They should not even graduate till their probation is done like they used to do.

What I did as a PPO in a slow district, was when I was assigned to midnights, tried to work with all different officers, and learn different ways of doing things. When I was new; I was told that each individula has their own way of doing things, and different officers have to use different appraoches. I feel we can learn from everyone on this job. I asked a lot of questions from everyone, even officers no one wanted to work with(I still do this). I went to all jobs I could (still do) on every watch i worked. I feel there is always something new to learn, and someone to learn from. Talk to detectives, states attorneys, P.O.s in court. Do not pay attention to haters, don't look down on other cops. Privately ask why they did what they did , so you can learn. It is never too late to learn, you will never know it all. Take evry test you can, and read the General Orders. WhenI was new, veryone used to help everyone else, and Sgts rode on your jobs to help you, and Plainclothesand Tac officers introduced themselves, and would help you out. Now,everyone out for themselves. You can even learn by talking to lockup and desk officers. Good luck. Plenty to learn in slow districts, don't let your guard down too much, don't be afraid to ask for help or advice.
