Tax the Bikes!

Speculation here and elsewhere is becoming reality....or an attempt is being made:
  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel's vision of Chicago as a bike-friendly metropolis found itself in the cross hairs of an alderman's proposal for a $25 bike tax Wednesday.

South Side Ald. Pat Dowell, 3rd, floated a plan to charge bike owners an annual $25 registration fee as a way to raise millions of dollars next year and provide an alternative to the mayor's proposal to hike cable television taxes to bring in about $9 million. Dowell also said she wants to require bikers to take a "rules of the road" safety class.

Emanuel, who this month led a bicycle tour of the Logan Square neighborhood as part of Chicago Ideas Week, said he would look at Dowell's plan. But he then linked his pro-cyclist agenda with recent success in drawing technology firms to the city, and essentially laid out why he almost certainly won't support the idea.
Once the door has been opened though.....

This idea will percolate and they'll figure out some way to make up the fall off in gas taxes and fines.

Who the is going to be the ones enforcing this one? Cops? The meter maids? Are you kidding me? Get out of here on this one. Let me guess, another ANOV. "Squad let me get an event number for a bike license violation." Soon they will attempt to tax and license skate boarding. A wheel tax. Speeding on bikes will be next.

Take a safety class? I've been riding a bike occasionally for over 45 years, far less after getting a car. Who does this idiot think she is, training to ride a freaking bike?

Which one of her schmoe cronies will be paid to "instruct" us pray tell.

Another goofy idea from a legislative body that is a laughingstock, for good reason.

People in Chicago can pay at least a thousand dollars more in taxes, per capita. People have the money, the City just needs to find ways of taking it from them. Big government must have big taxes to support it. Another idea is a professional tax. Charge all professionals, doctors, lawyers, engineers, registered nurses, teachers, CPAs etc. A thousand dollar a year pro tax.

Court to Decide if Detroit Really Is Broke

The city filed the case on July 18, and it said about half of its liabilities stem from retirement benefits, including $5.7 billion for healthcare and other obligations, and $3.5 billion involving pensions. How the city restructures its debt may set precedents for other struggling municipalities, bankruptcy experts said.

"We'll see other Chapter 9s," said Kenneth Klee of Klee,Tuchin, Bogdanoff & Stern in Los Angeles, who is representing Jefferson County, Alabama in its Chapter 9 case. "The pension problem is one that will require resolution, and with the labor relations being strained in parts of the country and some politicians not able to say no to employees and retirees, I expect there will be other chapter 9s to be filed."

On Monday, attorneys wrapped up a three-day hearing on legal authority issues surrounding the bankruptcy as objectors argued that Chapter 9 is unconstitutional and that Michigan's constitution protects pensions from being slashed.

I think bikes should be licensed. WHY NOT? They use the roads. They create "traffic". AND, they disregard traffic signals.

How many blow through stop signs and red lights.

Put tags on them so they can get caught by the red light cameras. About time the city get their money from someone else instead of the smokers, drinkers, and car drivers.

In the shire of Nottingham, formerly the City of Chicago - another great idea to tax the common man.

Here is a better idea - CUT THE ALDERMEN BACK TO 20 DISTRICTS. Get rid of 30 of them and all the associated costs that go along with their little fiefdoms.

If I were working in 011, this is what I would do. I would take my humper and stop as many people as I can. I would arrest as many people as I can. Every single time I stopped someone or arrested someone, I would tell them my reason (i.e. you were talking on your cell phone, you are drinking on the public way, etc...) and I would show them my humper/activity sheet. I would tell them who wants all of that activity too. Why not? Everything I am asked to do is perfectly legit. I did exactly what I wrote out above two years ago. My sergeant counseled me for no activity. So I stopped people and arrested people. I told them I was being ordered to bring my numbers up. I swear, if some people in 011 and brains and balls they sure are not using them.

Bikes are the answer to dangerous and rapidly increasing global warming. We must tax automobiles/trucks and gasoline so much that people will not want to own or drive one. Bikes or clean public transportation will be the main means of travel. But at the same time bikes must be heavily regulated and moderately taxed. Also we must get the majority of cops out of polluting squad cars and either on bikes of small motor cycles. Squad cars must be rare and biker spandex common with the new CPD. Global warming must be stopped in it's tracks. Other steps will be taken but they will not affect the PD as much.

We are paying a greater percentage of income to taxes today than before, during or after the Second World War. Think about the massive buildup for the war and taxes were still lower. I'm not for any tax but the traffic code training I would agree on if it only applied to the lawless group known a Critical Mass. They tie up traffic, disregard traffic controls, unlawfully and without authority block vehicular traffic, terrorize pedestrians, exhibit civil disobidience, have a contempt for lawful authority, namely police officers. Maybe the training could include acceptable hygenic and bathing practices, acceptable dress standards while in public and respect for authority in a civilized society. This group has a history of confrontations with police resulting in injuries. Having said that, police officers still associate and participate in the mayhem which this group sponsors. Whose side are these officers on and where is their loyalty?

Here's a challenge; reduce ALL taxes across the board... state income; gas; sales; entertainment; hotel; business; corp; etc.. Do it by at least 25%. WATCH HOW JOBS WILL BE CREATED; PEOPLE WILL SHOP AND SPEND.

This place is a fucking dictatorship! Nothing but fucking handoffs to people who abuse the system. The fucking revs are a joke; they live good and keep the crime going so they can stay in business.

Crime? Yea, cancel each other out; and with a new cig tax; I might start selling loose squares on the corner. I can conceal and carry now so I can protect my turf!

Tax his chew, tax his smoke,
Teach him taxes are no joke.
Tax his car, tax his grass,

Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his sodas, tax his beers,
If he cries, tax his tears.

Tax his bills, tax his gas,
Tax his notes, tax his cash.
Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.

If he hollers, tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.
Tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.

Put these words upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom!"
And when he's gone, we won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance tax.

Question--does anyone think there might come a time when bikes are not allowed downtown, or you will need a special license to bike ride there? I realize Rahm is a big bike supporter now. I also think it's only a matter of time before we have some nasty fatals involving tourists riding bikes down Michigan Avenue. And why doesn't Divvy rent helmets? I'd say 98 percent of the people riding Divvy bikes don't wear helmets. Granted, if you are an adult it's your responsibility to wear a helmet while riding a bike. But if the city could detour people from making dumb choices, that seems like a good thing to me.
Every weekday morning around 7:50 am, I'm on Clark Street by Latin School. Between there and Wacker, I always see bike riders darting between buses, nearly running over pedestrians, in crosswalks, etc, and many don't wear helmets. I know not all bike riders are like this,b ut I noticed at least two daily who are. Frankly, it seems to me that reasonable people would not ride their bikes there during rush hour. You can be as reasonable as you want on your bike, but you can't make car, bus and truck drivers be reasonable.

More then once while driving on the north side in the early evening, I nearly ran over a biker who was wearing dark clothing and no lights or reflectors on the bike or person. A real death wish knowing that it is hard to see someone on a bike at night and countless people are distracted drivers. Some sort of happy median needs to be made regarding people on bikes. I gues you can force them to buy registration and if caught without you can impound the bike. This would be a fine job for the historically corrupt Dept. of Revenue agents.

"No taxation without representation"

is a slogan originating during the 1750s and 1760s that summarized a primary grievance of the British colonists in the Thirteen Colonies, which was one of the major causes of the American Revolution. In short, many in those colonies believed that, as they were not directly represented in the distant British Parliament, any laws it passed taxing the colonists (such as the Sugar Act and the Stamp Act) were illegal under the Bill of Rights 1689, and were a denial of their rights as Englishmen.

The phrase captures a sentiment central to the cause of the English Civil War,

Tax his pants, tax his coat.
Tax his ties, tax his shirts,
Tax his work, tax his dirt.

Tax his chew, tax his smoke,
Teach him taxes are no joke.
Tax his car, tax his grass,
Tax the roads he must pass.

Tax his food, tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his sodas, tax his beers,
If he cries, tax his tears.

Tax his bills, tax his gas,
Tax his notes, tax his cash.
Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.

If he hollers, tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.
Tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.

Put these words upon his tomb,
"Taxes drove me to my doom!"
And when he's gone, we won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance tax.

I enjoy riding my bike here in the city as well. I won't miss the $25 license fee if it's put the task proposed bike education & safety. I see far too many of my biking brethren coming dangerously close to causing accidents due to a complete lack of knowledge as to compliance with the traffic laws. If this can change as a result of the license fees, it's worth it.

"Dixie,(ok maybe I'm getting my sixties cop shows mixed up) I'm sorry I'm writing up a bunch of unlicensed bike and tricycle riders at the Jewel on Broadway. This could take awhile. They're real desperados."

"Understood One Adam 12 don't let those criminal types get away without paying their fair share. Rahm says leave no dollar behind. Fire Department responding to multiple explosions at 3500 N Clark. Any units not involved in money making activities please respond".

Silence on the radio.

"Any units not involved in writing parkers or "bikers"? please respond to the domestic terrorist incident involving naked Captain America in Wrigleyville".

More silence.

Voice breaks on radio. Sounds like a combination of an overcaffeinated kid with ADD and some rich twit from Wilmette.

"All units this is Big Daddy Rahmbo looking for the Rubber Ducky. Rubber Ducky are you out there?"

Voice breaks on radio has a distinctive Brooklyn accent and sounds mildly inebriated.

"Big Daddy, this is the Rubber Ducky we will be right on the naked Captain America incident with the multiple fatalities right after, loud long belch heard on radio along with the sounds of gunfire and breaking glass?"

End of Transmission.

This Moron idea would never come from a White alderman who has adult bike riders in her Ward. The new sport would be taunting cops and having them chase you in their cars while you ride away through sidewalks and gangways until someone gets hurt. Then there is the Real Money issue; the bike rentals. These blue bikes are friends of Rahm, and if people have to take a training course to ride the rental bikes, well that is the end of that political contribution. The Alderwoman who put this out there needs to go back to her Ghetto and worry about crime issues.
