Rahm Saves Retirees $1,700

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s decision to forge ahead with a three-year phaseout of the city’s 55 percent subsidy for retiree health care will force individual retirees to pay as much as $4,440 more in 2014, City Hall acknowledged Thursday.

Two days after City Hall disclosed the mayor’s decision to count on $23.7 million in savings from a subsidy cut next year, the Emanuel administration talked turkey about the financial impact on individual retirees.

Out-of-pocket increases will depend on when employees retired, whether or not they are Medicare-eligible, are married and have children.
The class-action lawsuit by retirees continues apace:
  • Krislov’s class-action lawsuit argues that the Illinois Constitution guarantees that municipal pension membership benefits are an “enforcible contractual relationship which may not be diminished or impaired.”

The lawsuit further contends that retirees “have a property right to a lifetime health care plan” from the city “unreduced from the best terms” during their participation. Anything less would be a “depreciation of property rights” guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the lawsuit states.
You can bet a lot of people are watching this one carefully.

Premiums for Obamacare without any subsidy are: Single 6,276 a year or 523 a month. Couple 12,552 a year or 1,046 a month. Family 14,784 a year or 1,232 a month.

The City Council has to vote and approve Rahm's proposal to abolish the subsidy for retirees.

You are supposed to be transitioning over to Obamacare. The plan is that within five years the entire nation, except for federal politicians, will be under Obamacare. Hey, this is what the people wanted, and the people voted on, Twice. Only rascally radical republicans are anti-Obamacare.

Rahm's such an asshole. Do you mean to tell me he can't find another way to squeeze a nickel than fuck with retiree's?
Do you know what $4,400 a year means to someone on a fixed income AND that same someone can't even collect Social Security??

You must realize that the retiree health care is a continuation of the care you recieved for on-duty injuries. Once you retire, there is no medical section. So all those injuries keep getting worse and now Rham wants to screw us even more.
But thats Rham. Didn't his master suggest health insurance payments to injued vets?

retired: how is my insurance still capped at 1.5 million and my children under age 26 are not covered. This is in violation of the new law. The city is fighting for the right for anyone to get married but is forcing me to divorce in order to qualify for assistance for my insurance and leave my spouse so they qualify for public aid. Chicago values. The Chicago way. Chicago has money for anyone that does not contribute, but not for those who have worked hard for them. Chicago way "we make and change the rules as we see fit you have no rights to any previous promises,or contract. We changed our mind. we are not worried as simple minds will want retro pay and we will give it them and then screw them later, and those who follow will also want retro pay and it will continue as no union is made up of people who stand up for what is right. They are like children instant graticfication give them what they think they need and then take it away when they not thinking,or looking. sorry for the rant. Take your retro pay and forget about those who came before you as those who come after you will forget about you.

Hey Rham, why not give the savings to Cease Fire? They need the money more than the retirees. Right?

Police Officers that came on in the 60 , 70 & 80's should receive full health care benefits for life . It was a past practice , at that time Old Mand Daley was a man of his word , Jane Byrne and Harold Washington also honored the past practice of health care for retirees . It's the new daley born with a silver spoon and ballerina boy that want to Bust Unions . Both against ccw but are protected 24-7 by armed body guards . It's rumored that armed body guards drive ballerina boys kids to and from school . talk about safe passage , he's got it covered , but guess who gets the bill .

Cutting to the chase: After 2014 retirees will be on ObamaCare.

So he'll raise the premium and then suspend the COLA. A double hit for all you retirees. You worthless millstones around the cities neck. Thanks Rahm.

During the ballerina's campaign he stated that he would never hurt the policemen pension, since he has a uncle that is a retired police officer. What do you have to say about this Les?

What a fucking shame. In the 41st ward thanks to the POs family members voting for him, that POS Oconnor and Mulroe. All Police haters. In the last Presidential election Obama won the ward by over 2000 votes. We had 20 years of Republican conservative representation, now look what we have. Let's start with getting rid of Oconnor/Rham and then Mulroe.

Any idiot that voted for Obama, or any politician that supported Obamacare, should lose current medical benefits and be forced to go on to Obamacare with no employer subsidies...like many others are being forced to do.

No more free rides on taxpayer backs. Suck it up. Bankruptcy court is next. Ask Detroit retirees who will be getting 10 cents on the dollar...if they are lucky. Federal bankruptcy laws trump any B.S. state law. Those idiots who voted for the politicians who promised unrealistic payouts deserve what they contributed in and nothing more..

James Moriarty
Just goes to show where this city is headed. We promise to take care of our underpaid police officers by giving them free medical for life as a way to say thank you for the physical and mental toll the years of service have taken on them (Mayor Richard M Daley). Along comes Richie(Richard J Daley) who claims that his fathers promise was never put on paper and retirees are going to have to start paying for health insurance. Guess what asshole when men were men all you needed was their word, it was their bond. Nice job honoring your fathers word and legacy. The biggest problem I have with this situation is our retirees are on fixed incomes that never increase, that's right never increase. If you retired 20 years ago and your salary was $40,000.00 you received a pension benefit of $30,000.00 per year and unlike your State Pension that doubles after being retired after 12 years our retirees pension is the same $30,000.00. Yet you encouraged illegal immigrants and their families to come to our sanctuary city to sponge off everyone else while turning your back on the people who protected the resources, you and the industry that thrives here. You sir are as un-american as they come as well as your replacement who probably has a wedding dress in some basement of a house in Israel where he can flee to when people finally figure out that he is even less of a patriot than you are.

How did Rahm make 18 million in a year or two, after leaving the Clinton administration? Yeah, it's all legit. But we are going to have sky-high health care costs, and a greatly reduced, or no, pension. And we actually worked for a living, unlike Rahm and the rest of the scumbag politicians. I fear this country is headed for a second revolution.

To Do List.

1. Produce Zero Activity Every Month.

2. Don't Get Hurt Because When I Retire I Will Be Put In Sub Standard
Insurance Plan With Higher Costs.

3. Only Do What's Needed And Back My Fellow Officers.

4. Do Everything I Can To Dump Rahm In Next Election.

A taking of property, or diminishment of property rights requires compensation under the 5th Amendment. So if they want to reduce or eliminate your benefits - all they have to do is pay you.

The devil will be in the details of course - how much is it worth, how long will you live, etc. But if it's $0.01 less expensive than funding it, you can bet there will be a buy out...
