Two More Convictions
This is the second offender convicted for the murder of Officer Valadez:
- Kevin Walker, who prosecutors said went by the nickname of "Killer Kev," has been found guilty of the slaying of Chicago Police Officer Alejandro "Alex" Valadez.
Prosecutors said Walker was driving a car on June 1, 2009, when two passengers opened fire at Valadez, a 27-year-old expectant father who was responding to an earlier call of shots fired in the West Englewood neighborhood. The jury deliberated about 10 hours before handing down the guilty verdict this morning.
A second man, Shawn Gaston, was found guilty in the officer’s death in 2011 and sentenced to 125 years in prison.
- Just hours after a Cook County jury convicted the getaway driver in the fatal shooting of Chicago Police Officer Alejandro “Alex” Valadez, another jury Wednesday began deliberating the fate of the alleged gunman in the officer’s murder four years ago.
Christopher Harris admitted to detectives that he stuck his arm out of a Pontiac G6 and shot a .357 revolver in the early morning hours of June 1, 2009, prosecutors Jeffrey Allen and Anita Alvarez said.
“I shot the .357, but I didn’t mean to aim at anybody,” Harris is seen saying in the videotaped statement that was presented in closing arguments Wednesday.
“I shot four or five [times] at the most.”
Only four or five times? Well that makes it all okay, right? What an asshole. 100 years for this jagoff would be a blessing to society. Death would be a cause for celebration, but that isn't on the table.
UPDATE: Convicted!
UPDATE: Convicted!
- A Cook County jury convicted the gunman in the fatal drive-by shooting of Chicago Police Officer Alejandro “Alex” Valadez of murder and attempted murder after nearly seven hours of deliberation late Wednesday night.
Christopher Harris, 24, was the third of three defendants to be found guilty on charges connected to the June 1, 2009, killing in a vacant Englewood lot.
Earlier Wednesday, a separate jury found the getaway driver in the shooting, Kevin Walker, 25, guilty of the same charges.

The Harris jury had to be the dumbest!!!!! You find him on the murder but not that he personally discharged a firearm even though he confessed that he shot him with the ..357 which ended up being the murder weapon.
Nice job to all the states attorneys
Now to see how many years they each actually serve.
gee 125 years at 143 dollars/day, according to the cook county pres, to keep someone in prison...i think we're talking about 6.5 million dollars in today's dollars. even if only half the term is served this jag is costing us 3.25 million.
Great job to all the officers and detectives involved! Glad the family can finally have some closure.
A job well done Sergeant Foster.
Thank god.
We'll know the system works if these pieces of shit die in prison.
It took a while but, hopefully now you can rest in peace Alex. May the 3 pieces of shit rot in prison, suffer at their moment of death, and then burn in hell.
Is it me or was there almost no coverage of this other than reporting the verdicts?
Justice sure does take a LLLLong time.
rip officer Valadez

And with out the death penalty it's worth every penny.
More garbage off the street is a good thing.
But we have to thank Pat Quinn. We can only put them in jail.
Sucks no death penalty, and how about the anti parole petitions we always see floating around, years from now when only retires have a first memory if this case will this be one of the petitions that we must see because the defendant and our justice system is hoping society has lost interest?
Jeffrey Allen, who co-prosecuted with Anita Alvarez, is someone I have a lot of respect for. He prosecuted a murder in Albany Park a few years ago: a 23rd District crossing guard's daughter was killed by some jerk when his girlfriend/meal ticket found out he had another lady friend. (The crossing guard's daughter didn't know he had another girlfriend.) Jeff was not only a great prosecutor, but unfailingly compassionate and respectful of the victim's family, as well as the court advocates and police officers who showed up in support. It was in pretrial for two or three years and ended up with the murderer getting 80 years in prison, no possibility of parole.
People Who Know These Things say that long-termers usually die in their 50s. One hour of sun, bad food, little exercise, endless routine and confinement: not a healthy lifestyle. Add to that no hope of anything changing, and they give up.
If there was ever anyone in need of the death penalty, it's these three pieces of shit. Thanks Ryan and Quinn. We'll pay for these assholes for the next 50 yrs.
You never know what a jury will do so glad they got got. RIP kid.
Convicted murderers serve 100% of their time.

Since when? You never saw a shithead out after doing 17 or 18 of a longer sentence for murder. Maybe 100% is how it is supposed to be.
Pity they can't give these scumbags the needle.
They deserve nothing less.
These convictions should result in the death penalty. Period. If this was Texas these guys would be in a speed lane to a hotshot. Exactly where they should be.

You're wrong on this. You're wrong on this. Yes in the 80s and 90s convicted murderers served only 50% of their sentence. That's not the law now. Truth in sentencing changed to the law changed all of that. Now, those convicted of violent crimes resulting in bodily injury serve 85% and convicted murderers serve 100%. No ifs, ands, or butts. Doesn't matter of its Cook County DuPage County or anywhere downstate. Move on.
