Sergeant Exam Today

Hope you all get a good night of sleep.

Open post to discuss the test and testing process as we all come down from a few intense months of studying.

Bring pocket money - reports are that parking is being charged at $21 for the day. Add in the test fee ($25) and the coat check (a few bucks) and we're already in the hole.

Good luck.

its all fixed there are only 300 spots for the "chosen ones" and the fix is already in. Only the bosses kids make it, no reason for me to study because im not going to get it blah blah blah blah... Ive been hearing all of this for the past 7 months. Lets just translate that; Im too lazy to study so I will blame it on that. Guess what, if you study and you are #1, # 25, #50, or even 200 on the list from studying then they will have no choice except to make you. So do you think that nobody ever makes it because of score? Here is reality, the majority of people make it by score, its in the percentages. Merit is only 12-25 percent. Therefore, if you study and pay attention and score well you have good odds of being a sgt. but you would rather cry and whine how its all rigged.. lets call it what it is.. You know you cant pass it and your lazy because you dont want to study. im tired of the miserable bastards on this job.. nothing but crybabies.

When I was new to this job I had the same attitude as you. I looked around and saw, what I believed were a bunch of lazy coppers, always bitch&@ and moaning about pretty much everything. I loved the job and worked hard, to the point of stupidity some might say. Salty cops told me to slow down, it's not worth it, you won't be rewarded and you will probably wind up getting sued.

Fast forward twenty five years and I can honestly say they were right for the most part. Don't get me wrong, I loved to work and had a great partner and a great time, however, I have had to watch as totally useless and incompetent people have been promoted meritoriously again and again or those who attended special study groups that were by "invitation only", which just happened to have a statistically improbable amount of its group promoted by score, again and again. Yes merit only counts for 30% but as you attempt to move up the ladder it only becomes harder to get promoted to Lt. As they simply do not hire ass many off the list and at 30%, the powers at be have been able to put all their politically connected people in the top spots thereby owning this dept. and being able to control the decisions and favors being made across the board.

I took two promotional tests and scored relatively well but never made it and that's okay I'm not bitter about that. It's watching the politics of who gets time due, who gets days, who gets to specialized units, who gets the cush assignments etc. all based on who you know, that's what's tough about this job. Most people just want a fair shot, that's all.
Those old salty veterans were simply trying to provide me with a reality check by telling me the truth about how this job works and doesn't work. I know now they unfortunately knew what they were talking about.
Having said that, I wish all of you no clout go-getters the very best. It's always nice to see a person who study's and actually earns what they get, do well.
Best of luck.

Take a pill and relax. This first part of the test is pass/fail and a monkey could pass it without studying. The test today is nothing but a formality so the bosses kids can have their 30% merit spots and the city can make a little pocket change by charging you $4 to check your coats, rape you on parking for $21, and charge you a $25 test fee as if it costs more than .25 cents to administer this farce. I was going to go today but then I thought to myself, why waste my time, I'm already a detective. And I don't know where you got your merit percentages. I hate to piss in your cornflakes this morning but merit is 30% for sergeant. Judging by your grammar, punctuation, and misinformation, you're probably already a commander yourself. You're right about one thing though. Some people do make it legitimately on these tests but it's a very small number. Some people win the lottery too. Let's not kid ourselves and pretend that these tests are 100% fair and unbiased.

I recall when I took my sergeants exam in 1973. When I got my score I thought that I was out of luck, but found out I was in the first 100. However, I had to wait five years for the court fights by minority groups to settle and then I was passed up for a few years with a quoto.Don't forget the "temporary" sergeants that they made ( all clout"" that we had to sue to get demoted. Wow, what a journey. My point is it is never easy to get promoted on the CPD with all of the racial politics and clout and the fact that there are many talented men and women on the job. You must study even if you are cloutless.

I passed... on taking it.

"Blah, blah blah, the fix is in..."

The fix very much is in and when a system and an organization is this broken down with every facet weighed down and loaded with favoritism, secret arrangements, and clout heavy decision making, you get this very situation, much in need of a reform for a dept. too far gone for its own good.

how would you like to be one of those good coppers waiting this many years off the now defunct list, watching the preselected phone call crowd bump you in to another goround from the beginning all over again for the same thing to happen again and perhaps another 5-6 years of wait in line.

in the mean time the purpose you really serve as one of the pawns and cannon fodder without a free ride even if you do one day make it?

You get to start your seniority all over again in one of the spots not reserved at the airport, academy, headquarters, or a northside district.

congratulations and good luck if you make it...in 003 on midnights with time denied.

Have fun on midnights in some shit district you have no hope of getting out of because you forfeited all of your seniority for a few more dollars. I'm sure that will brighten up your know-it-all cheery disposition.

Glad you're up for the task. I'd prefer to be responsible for me and my partner. And it's not due to laziness or a lack of intellect. I have a double masters in education. I'm just happy doing what I am doing.

My only 'humble' advice is that if you make it...

*Never forget where you came from
*Treat others the way that you expected to be treated
*Have the backs of those that depend on you
* Lead by example
* Support and acknowledge the daily good works of those that deserve it
* Laugh/smile every day, Life is Short
Good Luck to all involved.

if the test is not rigged then why won't they show you the graded test so you can see what answers were right or wrong--- the purpose of giving a test is to see if you know the material and to correct things you are wrong about--- post all of the merit sgts made in the past twenty years and explain what they did that justified them being promoted over someone else who scored higher than they did--- I'd rather be lazy than be some douchebag who sucked miles and miles of c*&k to get those stripes...

"its all fixed there only 300 spots for the 'chosen ones' and the fix is already in...."

Yes the fix is already in. The exams are reviewed by the exempt rank, who get copies of the test. They can disperse that information to whomever they choose, namely those that are part of a special "study group" comprised of those officers who are connected. Merit appointments are 20% regardless of score, so that leaves you with the remainder of promotions by score alone. Within that group you then have those whose score was attained by foreknowledge of the actual test, so in actuality the number of people who make sergeant by score alone without any "help" is much lower. Yes, there will be very bright individuals who score in the top 20% without cheating, and without a phone call, but their reward will be working 1st watch in 005, and will have to wait years before they can gain enough seniority to bid out. Meanwhile, the cheating clouted ones will have much better spots. Good luck to those who really wanted this and earned it legitimately.

I tip my hat to you decent Sgt.'s out there, but thats why you get the big bucks. After 21 years on and still having fun, arresting dude, straight days weekends off, great furlough picks I can't change with #?'s in grade school ... With out a phone call, I'd be doing midnights for the next 10 years! That's about the time the next Sgt. Test will be given. Good luck and may the worthy coppers pass.

A grievance is already in the works because this department proves once again what happens
when the leadership vacuum allows a major department in the nation to pass on putting a process together that isn't about haste and waste.

smaller police departments in the country don't wait years to start a new process and then suddenly cram everyone into one test in one location in one day.
if you know from past experience that the list will last years and years without explaining the process to those who will be made to wait and then not informed when their status has simply expired, perhaps it would be fair to have an ongoing process like they do in places where it's an open position, you know how many spots there are, and you put in for it, take a test and get called.
Supposing you're somewhere that denies time, everyone that can get the time off to take the test gets there on time or goes on duty. Meanwhile potentially hundreds of officers couldn't make it for reasons beyond their control...
anywhere else that officer doesn't worry because there's an open testing process, a dept. Facility where he can log in, take the test, put his test in the running and filed as part of his application.

Well, almost the entire testing procedure was idiotic and even more so insulting. Get there just a little early to find parking... fine. They had very limited parking pay boxes set up. That number is fine on a regular day, but not when you have several thousand cars leaving at the same time. Get in at 7:30, pay $21 for parking, then stand around until 10:22 for the test to start?! Like cattle they wanted to funnel us into coat check rooms and the one working toilet that started to overflow and floor was soaked in urine. That's of course after after having to raise my hands three times to get a pass, then wait in line for 12 more minutes to actually be able to use the bathroom. It shouldn't take 20 minutes to pee during and important exam. The chairs were designed for kids. They were flimsy and way too low for anyone over 5'08". Finally, what retard decided to save money by not having the place properly heated? It got colder and colder! Also, what merit boss decided to put thousands of police officers in the same location at the same time? These days when we have to be mindful of terrorism this was a big mistake! If things go bad, more than half of Chicago's police force would of been exposed! Piss poor planning!!!!

I agree. That is why I take a proactive approach. I am a Doer. I already bought my white shirts. And after studying for so many years, I am going to score high enough to get promoted. People need to lift themselves up by their boot straps. It is easy to blame other people for your failures. Look in the mirror. The first part of the test was very easy.

Man that was a tough test. Everyone, including myself, who has been studying also thought so. Although, a few questions made no sense and none of the answers seemed to fit. I couldn't help but notice a few people were done pretty quick, and I can't help but wonder if they already knew what was going to be on the test, because there was SO much material to cover.

To10/26/2013 12:14:00 AM: Keep in mind if you're successful you will have to supervise all of the people you paint such a glowing picture of in your post. Wow, where do I sign up to work for someone who thinks so little of me. You'll make a great boss.

10/26/2013 09:28:00 AM

Your double master's in education don't mean you got the brains or balls to be a boss...let alone a GOOD boss. I have a master's from a nationally ranked program and some of my former classmates I wouldn't trust to pump my gas. School taught me the outs and ins of admin and politicking (which is part of moving up in public sector jobs like it or not). The military taught me most about leadership. But there is only one place to learn to be the police and it ain't in the military, in school, or snuggling with your partner under a comfy snuggie. Your double master's is cute but it don't mean the men and women you work with will follow you anywhere.

And the biggest question in my mind while completing this monstrosity was why are given an examination on the functions of a field sergeant when we are police officers. Should not we be tested on what a police officer should know in combination with the operational philosophy of the department and later be instructed in the functions of a supervisor if we score successful and are promoted? Who the hell wants to be a P.O. after 10 years?

After 20 years of service:

A Sergeant makes $ 99,756

A P.O. Blueshirt makes $83,706

So:

A Sergeant makes in basepay:

$ 16,050 more

Supervisors quarterly $ 5737

Sell back 200 hours
(of the 45 minutes a day Sgts make)

$ 9591

Add them up:
$ 31,378 MORE A YEAR

Also... no more touching scumbags and doing menial arrest reports.

NO MORE bullshit parkers, movers and contact cards.

And best
of all... no more damn court.

THE BEST day of my career was when I made sergeant.

Blow me suck hole. You are probably one of the cheaters. Fuck you in your pompous ass. It is a KNOW FACT that the subject matter experts help their favorites.

waaahhhhhh!!! wahhhhh!!! guys like you are exactly what is wrong with this job. How is it a KNOWN FACT know it all??? Is it because you never pass a promotion test?? Yeah, i will go with that answer. Be an adult and take a look within yourself and realize maybe that you are the reason your not passing tests. Lazy, dont pay attention or just dont care enough to actually learn things. Does the truth hurt yet?? The majority of coppers sit back and pretend to know it all and think they dont need to study because they know it all. Do yourself a favor, if you pass part one, study your behind off and put several hours a day into it. I guarantee you will more than likely pass. If you dont do this and you dont pass then you have nobody but YOURSELF to blame. If you dont put in the study time and effort then you have no place being a supervisor. These tests could care less about your big pinches in the past. Nobody cares about them when it comes to a scantron test... sad but true. So study and learn what our job is "supposed" to be on paper and pass the damn test. IF you think you know it all and have a better idea then good luck with that.. Im sure it will be the same as all of your previous test failures.

the odds of passing the first part are EXTREMELY high as compared to years past. So, if you are worrying about not passing the first part I would not.. If you got less than 60, yes I said 60 WRONG you will be fine on the first part and should move on to the second part. so all in all, you only needed to answer 40 or more total correct. good luck to all on part 2.. study hard and dont freak out about this first part. It ALWAYS seems like you got a ton wrong after the test because the only ones you think about and remember are the ones that you had trouble with and got wrong.. rule of thumb is if you think you bombed it you didnt, you just are over thinking it post test.

Who the hell wants to be a P.O. after 10 years?

After 20 years of service:

A Sergeant makes $ 99,756

A P.O. Blueshirt makes $83,706

So:

A Sergeant makes in basepay: $ 16,050 more. Supervisors quarterly $5737.Sell back 200 hours (of the 45 minutes a day Sgts make. $ 9591 Add them up: $ 31,378 MORE A YEAR

Also... no more touching scumbags and doing menial arrest reports.
NO MORE bullshit parkers, movers and contact cards.
And best of all... no more damn court. THE BEST day of my career was when I made sergeant. Good luck to all who took the test!!

10/26/2013 08:07:00 PM

Well I made Sgt with 6 years on the job and been six figures ever since. Working day furlos from the start. I sell back hours, AND go to court. Sure you get sued and brought into PO's lawsuits from just doing your job. I get paid to go explain what was done and why. But, do your job right, document and don't cut any corners and you will be fine.
I wont lie, its nice going to court. Lawyers apologize from bringing me in. Judges try to get me out by calling my case up first.
You are in the loop at work, crime scenes and any major incident.
Sure you drop in seniority but guess what? Supervisors pick their furlos differently and work with each other.
Yes becoming a Sgt was a great opportunity.
You get to be better to PO's and put them in for deserved awards.

Cant complain about the job one bit. Its worth every minute of studying and any $ you put into classes to better your chances.

Oh yeah, we also get retro pay on new contracts.

Its something most have to work for. Never pass up an opportunity to be a Sgt. Good luck!

I took the Bernstein class and took all of his quizzes and tests and studied pretty hard. And I can say that the test was written poorly for a lot of the questions. I truly think they are going to be throwing out a few questions for sure. Bernstein said this company makes questions straight forward I guess he forgot to mention that they leave important elements of scenarios out. This was part one and it was all scenario questions which surprised a few who said part one in the past was a piece of cake well it wasn't a walk in the park. When I first got there and seen that long ass line it made me realize that all these coppers are here for a few reasons. Its a shame that they made you wait almost 7 years for a promo test. 5000 pos took the test should say to the department hey there are a lot of people who like this job enough to take this test maybe we should offer it a little sooner. It was cold, the test started an hour late, I had to wait in a 15 minute line to take a leak, that little flimsy chair was killing my back(I feel sorry for the bigger people) and it was very loud when people finished and stood in the halls! I'm not too excited about how well I done. Maybe I did well enough. I paid for a study group and studied my tail off! I pray we passed, but that test was not right! 50% of what I knew solid wasn't even on there.

Good points but there's always bad with the good. You have to deal with CR #'s, officers doing stupid shit, officers that can't make any decisions for themselves, compstat meetings, acting as the DSS, dealing with complaining citizens calling for supervisors constantly, filling out that dumb log every night, not getting any time due, not being able to extend your furloughs, bosses yelling at you to get dog ass do nothings to write more bullshit activity, losing your seniority, getting stuck in a shit hole district that you can't get out of because you're the low man on the totem pole...etc. I'm sure there's a lot more crap that sergeant's deal with on a daily basis that I don't know about as I'm not a sergeant. The grass is always greener on the other side and I'm sure there's a good reason why sergeant's get paid more. It's no doubt better than being a patrolmen though due to the points you made above. I don't know about leaving a cushy spot, nice unit, or the D-Unit to do that shit though.

To give u an honest answer know one knows for certain. Saw some of the posts in response to yours that they would promote off the new list in Feb or March. That's hilarious. Unless they are done grading written portions of the 2nd part of test, there is no way in hell that can be the case. What we do know is Sgts are down 100 from budgeted manpower. That is per Sgts newsletter. A handful have prolly retired with free health care. They are prolly goin to make u off of current list because they need to be staffed in time for the summer. But this is the CPD. Good luck.

Weird test, oddly worded questions, unusual content not sure that test will give you the best overall candidates. Seems the test company picked out a few obscure passages from the thousands of pages of material. Transsexuals, earning overtime after 8hrs of court while on the medical, how often will a Patrol Sergeant deal with this type of stuff. Test was definitely harder than the first part usually is, maybe it will trim a lot of the fat. Oh and big thanks to Garry for showing up, asshole.

Reading comprehension problems. Other learning disabilities. Anxiety.

Interpenetration what people study for and how the questions are asked confuse people in stressful situation.

Some people may have nervous of steal when it comes to test time. When it comes to chasing a bad guy, shake in their boots when cutting corners (though few will admit).

Or the awesome test taker who yells in the radio when something hectic is going on. Annoying right?

Good luck to all who took the test..for all the younger ones taking their first promotional test remember these facts....30% of sgt promotions are merit. Some people with clout will have the answers or know what "buzz words" to put in the answers on 2nd part. Even if u think you ace the 2nd portion & find that you are 2500 on the list, you cannot contest your scores. You'll never get a chance to see your second part again. Memorize the best you can what the orders read. If you answer a question correctly, without certain verbiage, it may still be marked wrong... Civilians are the ones grading your test.

With logic like 'now that the city is hiring, there's more opportunity for advancement', I hope you never see a promotion.

How does hiring more have anything to do with not giving a test for, what, seven years?

When a couple thousand people retire and no promotions are made and no test is given, the Dept is shortchanging the supervisory ranks in two ways.

First, they play the 'do more with less' game and then hold a sgt responsible for more people and more things than they can possibly control.

Second, they keep scraping the bottom of the barrel on an old test list instead of getting the cream of the crop on a more recent test. (okay, we're talking 'in a perfect world' here.)

Also, if you give a test every two or three years, you have a better educated department, as a whole, because more people know more of the orders and other reading material, because they're 'always' studying for that next test coming up in eighteen or twenty months' time.

Anyone else notice that there were at least 30 people or so that were done within 30 mins? I don't care how smart you are... There is no way you could have read and finished in that amount of time. Do we have an idea who the "chosen " one's are??

Yeah, they are probably the guys who either studied their behinds off and knew it front and back or they didn't study at all and didn't care and guessed on them all... Enough with the conspiracy theory

I study because even if I don't make it, I'll still learn more about the job I love.

To the unpublished Moron:

Have you even read the Constitution? Did you see the part about "Congress shall make no law...."?

We aren't Congress. We make all the rules we want here. Our Blog, Our Platform. You don't like it, create a blog of your own - it's FREE!!! And then you can make the rules. Just don't expect us to advertise it.

You cut and pasted a comment and basically just added "Fuck you" to it and called the poster out like some schoolyard fight. Sorry, waste of everyone's time, so we flushed it.

Try harder next time. We're sure you have logical arguments that don't involve profanity and taunts to dinosaurs long retired. At least, we hope you do.

Want to know if you passed part 1 refer to Ricci v. Destefano, Clarissa Rodriguez writes a good summary.
City will get results then has to meet 4/5ths (80%) standard with minorities passing.
I/O solutions did their part just like they did in mentioned case, it is up to city to determine cut-off score.
cut-off score is basically the lowest score of the top 80% of scorers of a minority group. Not average, but lowest score that would ensure 80% of a minority group passes.

To take part 2 you need to meet the cut off score. Cut off score is determined by 80% standard. if 10 minorities take the test and 7 score 100% and the last three score: 40%, 30% and 10% then the cut off score will be 40%. It doesn't mean that the minority group scored low, it is just the lowest score which would allow 80% of that minority group to pass.
