Answer Key Rumor
A couple of comments have popped up and we actually received an e-mail or twenty about an answer key being floated around to the recent Sergeant Exam. The letters are full of conspiracy theories that this was floating around prior to the test.
In reality, this "key" was produced by a copper going to one of the challenge sessions and painstakingly taking notes as to correct answers and questionable calls by the testing company.
Don't believe the stories attached to this one.
On the other hand, 35th Street is looking into a bombshell allegation of some shenanigans that took place prior to the test - we're in the process of tracking down the rumor. It may affect a largish portion of the test taking pool in some manner. We'll let you know.

Aw jumping Jesus what now? I saw the answer key sheet and yes, I knew it came from the challenge session. If you couldn't figure that out you don't deserve to be a sergeant. As to this other rumor, what the hell now? I actually score well legitimately and now what?

Hopefully the bombshell has to do with study groups led by "dept. subject matter experts."
Solution....If any cheating or favoritism with providing "need to know question/answers" are found, strip the persons involved and any members receiving the information should be disqualified from the test.
Part one should be 75% or above passing so that it corresponds with step raises.
That should make the candidate pool for part 2 to be about 1000 PO's.
Any lower passing score is an insult to the "legit" people that studied. It's also an insult to the citizens of the city of Chicago.
there is not just one answer key out there. I did the same exact thing... along with about 20 other people who were at the test. I went through every question and the order that it pertained to and took out the right answer. Whats the big deal. Myself, like many others then gave the filled out key (days after the test) to friends so they can check it against the answers they had so they could relax and not have to wait until december 20th. Infact, people running the review session said that you are able to do that and it is acceptable. so just another story of people who are bitter on this job turning a non issue into a story.

That explains a lot... I was working on 2nd watch when my interview was scheduled, I wore my uniform of the day. When I walked upstairs to wait for my interview there was a younger officer waiting in full dress uniform. I thought to myself, if you cannot follow instructions you should be eliminated from the process. Now I know it is just the Chicago way... Clout rules

Yes, I am sure that 35th Street will thoroughly investigate the insiders. Then they will strip them. That is not all, next they will prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law. As a result, all promotional exams will be on the up and up. It will be strictly based on how well you do on the test.

Like everything else this will be interesting and looked into cops will get upset, then they will get they're VRI checks and everything will be ok till the next issue. Repeat again and again. Most cops have become like the avg American every new scandal is important til the next handout. You guys are so shortsighted its pathetic, you complain about not enough police but keep working that overtime and they will not have to hire. no overtime for 2 months no extra police on Michigan ave for christmas shopping or in Jul. and Aug, see how fast these politicians get in line. Pension and healthcare all that matter. You have to sacrifice a little to gain something.
OT: Don't forget, Tuesday our board of directors votes on little Mikey Shields guilt or innocence. Meeting starts at 10 am. Be there to make sure the board dumps this little shit who has basically screwed us all and lied about it.

Save the conspiracy theories for the second portion. As always, if you cant pass the first part you are pretty much brain dead.
Hire any M.A-level grad student Psychomatrician. They will look at the stats of each test item and tell you instantly what items and/or respondents fudged. Or, they should be able to anyway. Numbers don't lie, just the interpretation of them.
Off topic The tribune article where Asshole Daley indebted the city for generations to come by the sale of Municipal Bonds. That guy really screwed the pooch with his Shananigans . And he'll' never do a day in jail for all of his criminal acts.

I physically saw the answer key yesterday as well. Funny thing was that the very same people were complaining about clout and people cheating and how rigged the process is. A day later they have the answer key, lol. Just shows that with as much complaining that people do, they'll still use the same BS to get ahead.
Why would anybody have to cheat on a test that is pass or fail...? If you couldnt pass that test, you really dont deserve to be a Sgt!!!

Part of the test is finding the answers. If you can't build connections on this job with the command staff, how do you expect to be an effective sergeant?

As to the test- yes it was hard , but they did say you can be expect to be tested on the orders- all the orders . So it's your own fault for not studying!
Hopefully they will make this test legit ! Make merit from a qualified pool . They only high 300-500 sgts anyways , so make this test hard and hire the most qualified!

I always use this story as an example of how corrupt the CPD promotional exams are. I have heard people make the case that they all studied long and hard together, and must have done extensive prep for the exam. I might be willing to concede to that if it wasn't for the fact that each person has a completely different way of learning, interpreting and recalling information. All of those officers could have spent 500 hours studying together and there still would have been no way that they all would have remembered exactly the information necessary to place all of them in the top 50 of the list. We all know people at work that if you gave them the answers and 500 hours to study, they'd still not crack the top 200 on the list. If these officers did it legit, they've proven themselves to be the smartest CPD tact team of the last 30 years.
Now that there is a mostly reliable answer sheet floating around from the 2013 CPD SGT EXAM REVIEW SESSION everyone is able to get a rough estimate of their raw score before CPD manipulates the final cut off score ; so now we can stop with all the nonsense!
It is obvious why the Dept did not post what the passing score on the sgt exam was prior to giving the test. They have not released the score because CPD is wating to see what minorities , their sons and daughters, and suck ups scored on the exam prior to releasing the cut off score.
However , the better question for all of u that feel No one should be given help ( aka, a hand out as some may say) on a variety of issues is:
If I got a score below 65 WILL I or WILL I NOT accept a hand-out from the Dept when they grade this test on a curve and determine the cut off score to be below 65?
Now for those of you who WILL ACCEPT THE HANDOUT , Guess what ? Your No better than the people who get promoted on merit without EARNING IT for you know very well you should not be passing on to the next level with such an unacceptable score cause you DID NOT EARN IT!
Also, you can never again knock a guy for accepting help cause no matter how you cut it , it's a HANDOUT!
For those of u who will stand up and say I WILL NOT accept this HANDOUT I have the up most respect for you!

Heard that there was a small study group of the chosen few, that had at least 60 actual questions to the test to study. Guess if u let enough bosses to review test, one will pass questions around

Yep, all true except its not 97, it's 7 and the ceremony is on Dec 24th, at City hall......in Cincinnati.
If the answer sheet is from the review session why does it appear to be white paper. The copy we were given to review our answers was yellow
It's wonderful to see that Chicago's reputation for wide spread corruption is still intact. In the end, it is the good decent people who suffer.
Look, going into this I know that some people are special. I know some people who are insiders. But that is the way it is. Don't let it bother you. Don't obsess over it. It's not worth it to stress over. Have a blessed day and remember who and what is most important- your family and loved ones.

Should take in to account:
arrest history
amount of court (testifying)
federal lawsuits (you should be able to advise your troops on what to expect)
the ability to work outside the box(this is common sense something 70% of you don't have)
amount of court (same 15% of cops daily) you should know how a case is being processed
felony arrests also/ warrants / etc
look up some of these bosses they have 9 arrest their whole career and want to lead from the front.

Heard that class will be 92 and that only 10% will be Merit like last couple of classes... Which was great because otherwise I would not have made it...
At least McCarthy had enough sense to interpret the contract and use his discretion of choosing "up to 20%" of which he only used 10%! That boosted the legit people up. Thank God he did that otherwise I would still be waiting!
Nothing here is legit. Certain people who have connections will get answers, buzz words ect.... Get over it. I have over 20 years & have taken promotional test. The last 2 I was in the top 10 % but did not make it. Ever test is the same & the same bs starts after the test. Waiting 6 wks for results is not bad...prior test you would wait longer. If this is like previous exams, don't b surprised if it's July and your still waiting for a list. My guess is that the first class from this list won't b till 2015..
With all the bs & cheating, some people who study still get promoted. Just because you aced the 1st part, don't think you will score high on the 2nd part. I've seen numerous people that did great on first part & end up in the thousands on the list. Keep studying, stop crying & good luck

O.T...to those complaining about officers wearing their dress uniform: I did exactly that. I was told by 2 different supervisors, "your going to a job interview. Dress for it." I did. Didn't help.
Well if that truly is the answer cheat I failed the exam. I am comfortable accepting my failure for I did not study one general order. But if there is a answer cheat going around that means someone or some people already had the answers to the test. So the people who actually studied for the exam are being cheated because a person(s) had the answers to the test. Can anyone guarantee that no one had the answers to the test on the day of the test? If not then the test was not fair and should be tossed out.

By using this rational, Jerome Finnigan is the ideal candidate.
I know plenty of guys that are in court all week, but I wouldn't ask them for advice on how to process disorderly. There are far too many important aspects of this job to solely focus on number hunters. Taft and gang teams would have too much if an advantage with not having to chase the radio all day. Most tact guys don't know how to work the watch, and most watch guys don't know how to work tact. The goal should be to find people that can comfortably navigate both jobs.
A very good friend of mine is a Sgt for the Staties (Mass State Police). He took the Lt test for MSP this year given by I/O solutions and they were given their scores by the end of the day. Today he said I/O solutions gave the MSP test for captains and that the list of preliminary scores were already up. Now granted he said there are only around 160 LTs in the Mass State Police to take the Captains test and not alot more SGTs to take the LT test but goes to show that this very year I/O solutions handled testing different than they did here

I too admit I am guilty of working VRI. However, I work it to better my retirement options since our pension is questionable at best now. I would gladly stop working VRI if we can all get together and we all pull together to refuse to work VRI. I agree it will better our situation in the future. Let's hear your ideas for this plan then.
Fucking guy sitting next to me obviously didn't study cuz I only got 34 correct! Oh well I guess I'll just do the bare minimum for the rest of my career and get paid quite handsomely! Keep the VRI comming baby!

I physically saw the answer key yesterday as well. Funny thing was that the very same people were complaining about clout and people cheating and how rigged the process is. A day later they have the answer key, lol. Just shows that with as much complaining that people do, they'll still use the same BS to get ahead.

For all of the people that are sincerely studying for the upcoming sergeant's test good luck. Look, study for the test and hope for the best. But remember that we are in Chicago. Some people at 3510 S. Michigan Avenue get to see the test contents for review. Now you and I know what happens next. Then 30% of each class is merit. I have seen people study their ass off and not make it and then become extremely bitter and upset throughout their careers. It's not worth it. Just study for the test and hope for the best. If things go your way good. If they don't then life goes on.

Does anyone realize that the subject matter experts(SME's),are the clouted bosses that don't know a thing about this job. Case in point the new test booklet ....example question number three(3), the answer to the question according to SME's is "d". The problem is that there is no mention of an Officer Redmond in the number three(3) senario.
This was a problem that caused confusion in part one, and is sure to repeat itself in part two.

If you bothered to pay attention, the "merit" letter came out in April and they asked for an update in September. They've been sitting on it since.

Don't expect any detectives to come for quite a while. There are just under 800 dicks in the city and McCarthy has openly said he wants that number down to 600. He wants to get rid of a tested Det position and make Det 100% merit or simply assign a PO at PO pay to do the job. He wants to use the promise of a merit promotion as motivation for POs to produce stats. He also wants more hard chargers in the D unit arresting shooters and murderers. He despises the current crop of detectives as lazy do nothings and has openly said this many times.
One rumor circulating is that retro will be exchanged in contract talks for getting rid of a tested Det position. Rahm can probably break the union on this because there are so few detectives.
Everyone said they were getting rid of Lts, but that will never happen. It's the Detective test that is going away.
Well if that truly is the answer cheat I failed the exam. I am comfortable accepting my failure for I did not study one general order. But if there is a answer cheat going around that means someone or some people already had the answers to the test. So the people who actually studied for the exam are being cheated because a person(s) had the answers to the test. Can anyone guarantee that no one had the answers to the test on the day of the test? If not then the test was not fair and should be tossed out.

What the fuck is a answer cheat? This is a answer sheet. DId you not read the white piece of paper they gave you when you finished the test? They actually explained what the paper was when they gave to to you. You didn't even have to read.
There was a review session after the test last week so you could challenge a question that was unfair. The only way you could challenge a question is to be given the correct answer. This is not a hard concept to grasp.

Should take in to account:
arrest history
amount of court (testifying)
federal lawsuits (you should be able to advise your troops on what to expect)
the ability to work outside the box(this is common sense something 70% of you don't have)
amount of court (same 15% of cops daily) you should know how a case is being processed
felony arrests also/ warrants / etc
look up some of these bosses they have 9 arrest their whole career and want to lead from the front.

First of all no one cheated! The only reason this allegation has been fabricated is because those that scored below 65 are upset and feel it's owed to them . Guess what u did not EARN it! There should be no second chance for you! Apparently, you got below 65, and prior to taking the sgt exam you would tell all your friends and blog on here advocating that NO ONE should be PROMOTED if one did not EARN IT. You can't have it BOTH ways ,MY Friend ,either you believe achievements are EARNED OR you dont. Your probably the same guy who tells his family and friends that if you would of studied you would of done well . The dept hasn't even made 250 of the 2006 test. All that money spent on a test and not even the top 300 promoted. Pathetic.
The question is not who had the answer key after the test, but who had it before the test. I'm proud I sat it out, at least my pride is in tact. What I learned from the last test was not to bother to take tests on CPD. But I always get a kick out of bosses telling roll calls how legit everything is, and to study hard... yeah right
SCC please explain how the answer key is on the white carbon which we all handed in and supposedly had no access to after the completion of the test?
We heard from an exempt that 66 is the cut off.

You are so full of shit I had to open a window to get rid of the smell. McCarthy hasn't said shit about the detectives publicly or otherwise. I think he could care less about what goes on in the d-unit, his only concern is the amount of dead bodies not whether the cases are being closed by arrest. Listen to him lately and he has figured out how fucked up the system is here with convictions and sentencing. He is not blaming the dics for that.
As someone who went to the challenge, I can say the answer sheet is wrong.

and don't forget that the tact team that all made Det together also had a bunch of them make Sgt together... interesting... some of them are just down right stupid but are now leaders of men... It is all legit.

Getting rid of lieutenants will never happen, huh? Lieutenant was always considered the BEST job in the Department because ... no real responsibilities unless you were a C/O in a unit. Lt.'s in districts did nothing except be the watch commander a few days per week and now that's gone. And ... look at the majority of suburbs, even the larger ones. They eliminated the lieutenant's positions a long time ago. Most have sergeants and then commanders (who are sergeants). Economically, it's a winner for a city. Won't happen here for awhile but never say never. It will happen eventually.

I dont know but i take the brad woods classes and it couldnt have been more far off. I read everything they told us to read and took all of the tests and quizzes and I still ended up getting about 29 wrong. Many others ive talked too who are in the woods classes have scores ranging from 19 -44 wrong. WTF??? Your charging us this much money brad and talking this big game about how you know what they are gonna ask etc is all a scam. And we fell for it. I havent talked to anyone yet who has done better than 19 wrong on the test who is enrolled in brad woods class.
