Operation Santa

  • Over the weekend, Operation Santa, a program of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, delivered toys, books and gift cards to 35 children of officers who died or were severely injured while on duty.

In the program now in its seventh year, Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at the families’ homes in a limo and police officers dressed as elves accompany them in a motorcade. At least a dozen uniformed police officers joined the effort, helping to carry the boxes of gifts and stockings filled with knickknacks such as mugs and Rubik’s Cubes.

The nonprofit organization helps the families year-round with expenses but puts particular emphasis on letting them know they haven’t forgotten them around the holidays, said Phil Cline, executive director of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.

“It’s tough for the family, especially (because) their loved one was taken at the prime of their life,” said Cline, a former Chicago police superintendent. “We want them to know they can lean on the Memorial Foundation to help them through these times.”
Always remembered.

The Memorial Foundation does good work.

That being said I'm convinced Old Country Buffet Cline set it up so he could have a nice easy post retirement gig that paid well.

Now I don't know what his weight is post cancer, but just because he may resemble Santa doesn't mean he needs to get a near six figure salary. Maybe it's more than that now.

I refuse to donate to it. I give money to the 100 Club.

Probably ninety percent plus of the "labor" needed to run the organization could easily come from volunteers.

You know, I'm no super fan of Cline, but what is this obsession with his salary? If the fund hired a director it'd probably cost more. Yeah, he gets his pension - the same one he earned and that he would have if he had some other job.

I think if you're going to lob criticism at a former Supe, pick Hillard. Remember his bullshit every time you pick up one of those new tasers. Another Chicago sweetheart deal where we buy something we don't need and then get it shoved down our throats.

No one cares about our own but us.

Always remember the fallen and their families...

It's part of our "old fashioned" traditions that makes us unique.

It's something an unmanly and hollow shit-ass like Rahm can't wrap his little hate filled and pointy head around because there isn't a money making motive to it.

Decency, respect, honor, duty and sacrifice...
They mean nothing to these fast and greasy, tech savvy, up-to-the-minute, fixated on fuckery people like Rahm and his cohorts.

Perhaps Policemen are a reminder to them as to how shallow, cheap and unaccomplished they are in the realm of men?

Perhaps it's galling to them on an intense and deeply personal level that Policemen refuse to humbly bow and genuflect before them?

Afterall... They've achieved so much more than you mere Cops...

"We're so sick and tired of all these accolades being given to the cops."

We'd rather be right with The Almighty for doing his work (however imperfectly) than to be at a stand-still for fear of displeasing the joyful haters.

Policemen... Y'all a strange and interesting bunch...

God Bless The Police...
God Bless The Fallen...

First of I don't think you have over $100,000 in there cause you're a moron. By your reasoning, the Cities creditors can then go in to your own bank account and take money back back that's been deposited. They can also take your house too! Many of our own elderly officers are divorced, chronicaly ill, living alone, in Nursing Homes, have crappy pensions, have physical impairments, problems paying their bills, etc, while some of our profession and organization just get richer and richer, fatter and fatter, with giant pensions, and never have any rain on their parades, yet put on a good empathy act, as long as no $$$ come out of their pockets. The majority of critics have no clue and I would bet, have never donated their money or time to the CPMF.

At every charitable organization, there are people who earn a salary. A lot of hard work goes into encouraging corporations and private donors to give money whether on a one time basis or a regular basis. Every person who gets a salary from the CPMF works extremely hard to earn it and they do it for a cause that's close to their hearts.

Without all the work that has been put in, most of the money given out to police officers in need would not have been given. Donating $5 a paycheck, while if that's all you can afford, is generous and needed, it's not going to add up fast enough to equal money and tuition costs for school that is handed out to the families on a constant basis. It takes a lot of work to build relationships that encourage corporate and private donations of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Sometimes you spend a little money in order to get a lot of money.

Phil and the staff are doing an incredible job over there on behalf of all of us. Those of you who complain about him would never slam the door in his face if God forbid, you needed the help they provide. You should be ashamed that you choose to use this happy post as a sounding board for negativity and facts you don't understand.

Try volunteering for the CPMF one day and talk to the families who have been unfortunate enough to ha e needed help from the CPMF. It's a type of pain no one ever wants to feel. I guarantee you that every family, through their suffering, is grateful for the CPMF and what Phil is doing.

Bite me you suckass.

Cline set up the charity and now he takes a phat salary. It's irrelevant where the money for the salary comes from. There are other uses for that money not named PP. Payroll Phil. Get it PP. Tip your waitstaff well!

Years ago I tried to get a reporter interested in the Phil as Charity Diva story and was told by the reporter that it was "interesting". However, Phil apparently had returned that mope's phone calls over the years and the reporter didn't run anything. Phil had treated the reporter "right" so the reporter ignored it.

The sky is not falling and the executive director does not make 200K
Any/all salaries come from outside, private or corporate donations only.
100% of POLICE donations and payroll deductions etc. go entirely and directly to the families of deceased or catastrophically injured officers.
So beef all you want just get the facts straight before you post.
Even if you don't donate, the Memorial Foundation will help your spouse and children in the event you are killed or injured.
I pray we never have to spend another cent on any 'future' recipients and ask His blessings for all that support this cause and will continue to ask that He watch over 'ALL that Serve and Protect.'
Stay safe... Merry Christmas.

Probably ninety percent plus of the "labor" needed to run the organization could easily come from volunteers.

..and in YOUR entire career, list all the events or volunteerism that YOU contributed.
Cue the crickets...3-2-1
Not intending to put you down, but you see that in a perfect world IF they had an abundance of volunteers/contributors we wouldn't be having the exchange.

Fills job as executive director is to wine and dine the rich and famous and convince them to donate to the fund. Those meals are paid for by the fund. Some of those meals occur out of state, and Fills airfare and hotel and rental car is paid for by the fund. Fill also has an SUV 'work car' paid for by the fund, including gas and insurance.

Fill definitely has the gift of gab and bullshit and is perfect for the above job description. If Fills heart was truly as big as his greed, he would donate his CPMF salary to the fund itself. The man is a already millionaire and does not need the fund money too.

Many of you truly do not know Fill. Those of us who know everything about him know that Fill has always been for Fill in both his personal and professional life.

I wrote the first posted comment and still stand by it.

This is an answer or explanation to why Nationwide is the sole provider to the city for deferrd comp. I understand its from Orange County, but the principles and reasoning are the same.
Called Nationwide yesterday to consolidate my deferred and 401k's and talked to corporate office in Ohio. They do the deferred nationwide so Chicago has the same rules, benefits and restrictions as most other cities in the plan.

Why are we only allowed to defer money to ING, or Advantis Credit Union for our deferred compensation services? This is a complex question. First, ORS 294.033 and 294.035 limit local governments to offering deferred compensation accounts under an annuity contract or with a credit union. This means that deferred compensation monies may not be invested directly in stocks or mutual funds, but may be invested in similar types of funds if offered by an insurance company. Second, the County has contracted with one insurance annuity providers and one credit union, and established the contracts after conducting a competitive RFP. By limiting the number of investment providers, the County's aggregate account value should be high enough that the County will be able to negotiate a broad number of services and lower overall fees

Through the two investment providers, participants are able to invest in a wide range of investment types, including fixed low risk accounts, socially responsible funds, bonds, and domestic and global stock funds. Advantis Credit Union offers an account that is similar to a certificate of deposit, and is insured up to $250,000. The funds available from ING are offered in conjunction with globally recognized fund families, including Fidelity, Oppenheimer, Vanguard, PIMCO, Janus, American Century, and many others.

6.17am.....Phil's salary comes from the corparate sponsors, all donations and proceeds from merchandise go to the cause.

get your facts straight before you slam the guy

12/16/2013 09:15:00 PM

And if Phil didn't take such an enormous salary it could go into the fund.

Get your facts straight, then slam the guy.

12/17/2013 04:03:00 AM

So Phil takes it from the left pocket and the fund gets whats left in the right pocket. Would be better if all donations, corporate and other, went to the cause!

First of I don't think you have over $100,000 in there cause you're a moron. By your reasoning, the Cities creditors can then go in to your own bank account and take money back back that's been deposited. They can also take your house too! The money in deferred comp is YOUR money just like any other investment you have made with your pay check. The city can not touch it nor can any creditors of the city.

12/16/2013 07:56:00 PM

Wishful thinking on your part. The first poster was right to be worried. You're wrong to be complacent.
(And deferred comp isn't the purchase of a home, so don't compare apples to fire hydrants. Your analogy is faulty.)
