Progress, Not Success

At least that's what McJersey says, completely disregarding the statistical manipulation:
  • Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy checks his cellphone every morning for the latest crime notifications. The news almost always is grim.

Despite averaging 1.1 murders a day, Chicago Police reported a 17 percent decrease in killings from 2012 and the fewest murders in the city since 1965. But McCarthy isn’t celebrating. “This is progress, not success,” he said, “We still have way too much gun violence in this city.”

Despite a drop in murder that has hit nearly a 50-year low, countless family members and friends of the 2013 Chicago murder victims don’t get to reset their losses Jan. 1.
A fifty year low. Sounds impressive. Of course, if you look at a graph, 2013 falls into line with the previous declining totals from 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. 2012 was the aberration.

If you count the "death investigations" that will be reclassified as homicides later next year when no one is looking, you'll have a few more numbers to count. And if you add in the "mutual combatant" numbers, you might even see an upward tick from 2011.

Of course, the real number that matters is the rate of homicides, and seeing as how Chicago was nearly a million persons larger in 1965, one has to think the rate moved downward at all. 400 homicides per 3.5 million looks a lot better than 400 homicides per 2.7 million.

Why is it that the number of people being shot are never told? 5-10 per day x 365 = 2,000-4,000 people shot every year in one city!

432 homicides in the city at this very moment. 2 Days for us to post at least 3 homicides to tie 2011, or 4 to beat it. I'm sure at least 2 will die tonight (3 at the most) and at least 1 mid day tomorrow. I believe monday will be like 10 degrees and the rest of this week will be unbelievably cold also So 2014s beginning might be a little slow, but Chicago will not post under 400 homicides in 2014, or any time in the foreseeable future. There is literally nothing you Chicago cops can do to drop Chicago's homicide rate to NY or LA levels. There is not enough of you.

Although where I live (the same block 7 yr old Heaven Sutton was killed last summer) I have seen progress in shooting and murder reduction because police have literally swarmed the area, but maybe some of you cops can back me up on this who might work in the area. Does it seem there has been an uptick in armed robberies?

No one can, even grudgingly, deny that between the efforts of Chicago's mayor and superintendent of police, the homicide rate has diminished. For awhile there Chicago was beginning to resemble Newark, N.J. crime wise. I think our top two leaders deserve some accolades.

You must also factor medical technology. Medicine and doctors are saving peoples lives at a greater rate. On killing by Lt. Grosman he cites a Harvard study which found that if the U.S. had medical technology of the 1960's/70's the murder rate would be 4x what it is now. So 1600 murders this year, if we compare apples to apples.

so wait..

wan't it all about counting homicides.

now we're counting murders.

are murders what you think they are. it depends on what the definition of 'is', is......am i right.

like pension promises don't assume you know what the words they use mean.

nice timing tho.. if you check the dec. 2012 homicides [at 27] guess homicides are up over 33 percent compared to dec. 2013.

there's a few more days to go and the guns are blazing tonight. stay tuned for next month's 'spike' talk

How many murders were reported a the end of December 2012?

What is the number of homicides for 2012 currently?

This would document if McCarthy is playing games with the numbers.

Then comes the real question that would document how the citizens of Chicago are not being served by the SAO's office and the hierarchy of CPD. Just how many of these murders were cleared by the arrest and prosecution of the offenders?

When the CCX's are removed the clear up rate is at an all time low!

The 1965 number is total BS, but it makes for an excellent headline which is all that people will read and recall. The real number which is laid out be the Cook Co M.E. matches ours and includes police-involved, ISP jurisdictions and all those other "under investigation" ones.

Year to Date Totals
Shot & Killed: 369
Shot & Wounded: 1,766
Total Homicides: 445

As a bonus, we're going to have a record December too:

December To Date
Shot & Killed: 31
Shot & Wounded: 104
Total Homicides: 37

Really 12:51am?! The mayor nor superintendent have nothing to do with "homicides diminishing" but everything to do with the numbers that are given to the public. If people are going to shoot someone, they aren't thinking "I shouldn't do this cuz the mayor/ supt won't like it!" Go back to sleep! Accolades my ass- they deserve nothing but a swift exit left.

Thanks SCC for bringing up the decline in population. With less people there should be less murders. The rate per thousand is the only useful measurement here.

Murders per thousand people, alderman per thousand people, city budget deficit per thousand people...

Letting politicians define the terms puts them in the most favorable light. People need to realize that is far from reality though

Yep, McBullshit is the King of Crap! But when sixty-percent of the population is either illiterate, an illegal immigrant and/or on the dole for five generations it matters not one bit what nonsense you spew. In 1965 I lived but a full nine blocks from the northern border of 011 and was safe and sound. Today, the 011th District has been imported into Edison [Park, Norwood Park, and yes, the perimeter of that last bastion of the connected Irish city workers and their inherited wealth, Edgebrook. The most telling statistic is the homicide rate and it tells me I'm safer in Kandahar, Afganistan than I am in most neighborhoods in Chicago. And in five years the population factor in this equation will decrease by four as I take my family out of here as well.

The woman found dead earlier this year while bound and gagged to a chair in an abandoned factory at Kostner and Arthington has just been reclassified changed from a homicide to a death investigation. This is due to the fact that the medical examiner has not yet released her cause of death.

So what was an obvious homicide has now been reclassified until after the 1st of the year. The funny thing is, if you count all such obvious murders that are currently listed as death investigations, we're actually over the 2011 homicide total at this point. Thus, since McCarthy has been Superintendent the homicide rate has increased each and every year. That is the real story!

Thanks to the saturation of cops on the west and south sides, transfers, and retirements the 19 district has once again set a record for robberies 3 years running. Add to that the #3 beat in robberies in the city this past year with the depletion of police staff. They will continue to enjoy more than the 31 RAP statuses they had for the last half of 2013. Way to go Mayor and Superintendent !!!

McCarthy might the least number of homicides, since 1965, but he also has the lowest clearance rate of recorded history.

The reason less people are dying are the population drop in the City, well trained paramedics and great doctors at the trauma centers.

Admittedly, it takes some brass balls to stop counting certain homicides and delay counting some "death investigations", and then publicly report that we are making progress in reducing homicides due to McCarthy's policies. On the other hand, maybe it is not so bold because there are no ramifications for lying. The media of old would have exposed this in a heartbeat and they did once in the 1980's. Bold or not, it is certainly disgusting.

There is almost nothing that this Brooklyn foul ball done that is right. Of course if he spoke up and said we need more troops he'd be on his way to his next town to ruin.

Until we dump Rahm and get someone in the Mayor's spot who is willing to deal with the realities and the mistakes (crimes) of the previous administrations you could have Sir Robert Peel or George S. Patton as Superintendent. As long as the mayor wants to slash and burn the department Chicago will continue to get worse.

And I stood proud since the days of Richard J. Daley and James Rochford, and I always voted.

Sadly, we disagree on one point.

It will take at least two to three generations of concerted effort to BEGIN the reversal of the intentional screwing of this Department into the ground.

Everyone with their fingerprints all over the destruction of CPD will have to be grinning in their gilded graves in riotous rot before a true course of correction can be set.

Conversely, who is going be left to raise up and train the fearsome warrior Police who will be much needed to put a lot of bad genies back in their bottles here in Chicago?

Remember... The beginning of the end was the taking away of The Patrolman's swagger for the sake of pure fuckery.

Who will be left with the aggregate knowledge and muscle memory of REAL and PURE Chicago Policing?

Will it be a true son or grandson who learned good lessons at Dad/Grand-Dad's knee?

Will the political and media climate be such that The Police can truly be THE Police and wreak havoc on bad people who break the law no matter who they are?

Just don't know the answer to that...
