Karma is a Bitch

  • CBS 2 Chicago investigative reporter Dave Savini was arrested Saturday in Naperville and now faces misdemeanor charges including battery, driving under the influence of alcohol, and endangering the life of a child after he left the scene of a minor traffic accident, officials said.

Savini, who lives in Naperville, was arrested about 12:20 a.m. after a minor accident that took place in the parking lot of Taco Bell at 75th Street and Rickert Drive, Naperville police said.

The driver of the other vehicle told police that he wanted to report the collision to police, but Savini refused, Cmdr. Lou Cammiso said. The driver said Savini pushed him when he took a photograph of Savini's license plate with his phone, Cammiso said.

Naperville Police Sgt. Ken Gettemy said police identified Savini by his vehicle's license plate, and arrested him near the intersection of Saratoga and Plainfield Naperville roads.

Savini had two children under age 18 in the car, hence the endangering charge, Gettemy said. "I can't confirm whether or not either, or both, were his kids," he said.
Golly, a supposedly upstanding reporter driving drunk with children in the car, committing battery and fleeing the scene of an accident. So why do we say "karma is a bitch"? Guess what Savini is famous for?
  • Before joining CBS 2 Chiago, Savini worked at WMAQ-TV in Chicago as an investigative reporter (1993-2004). In 2003, Savini won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for his series “Code Blue, Code Red,” which investigated law enforcement officials and exposed 250 drunk-driving offenders among Chicago police officers, firefighters and paramedics.
Interesting. These are officers, firefighters and paramedics who have already served their criminal penalties and administrative discipline for their off-duty acts, and as far as we know were never accused of being drunk on-duty, but somehow, this is a media story worthy of an award?

Let's see if SeeBS takes down that part of his bio before tomorrow. As of this posting, a quick Google search reveals none of the local TV or radio stations have a single article up regarding this arrest - it's almost like....like....a code of silence or something.

Dave Savini is A POS. Went to Weber HS with him and he was a jerk back then too. You won't see any of the news report this because they like to say "it's personal" just like Hosea Sanders getting extorted with pictures of him smoking crack or when Joan Espositos husband are a shotgun. Now THATS personal but they can chase off duty coppers wives trying to get a story.

Gina Savini, his sister, was a cook county states attorney back in the 1990's during the same time that current Dupage States atty Robert Berlin was also a cook county states attorney. Both worked together at 26th and California. I'm sure the calls have already been made and this will go away. The victim will be compensated for his troubles and his car damages and he will be a no show in court.

Interesting comment below the story by someone - "This is a private matter and not news."

Not News? YEAH RIGHT - how many local news papers publish someone's name when they are arrested for DUI and then they are bombarded by Lawyers calling and mailing to represent them for DUI arrests? It's like you're guilty before the trial.

There was also another comment saying he was targeted by police. Everyone knows "all the reasons".

Bottom line - he had too many (which really isn't "too much" today to blow positive) but the big thing was that he left the scene of an accident (maybe clouded thinking due to his alcohol content?).

If I drink, I drink at home because it isn't worth getting a DUI on the street. Had some friends get DUIs and it ain't worth it. Some towns like Wilmette are in it for the revenue.

He was talking into his microphone while his camera man filmed him as he talked about how the police have them surrounded and they are trapped. (total bullshit because they were clearly told to go west where there was an easy exit). I then remember him almost getting knocked on his ass from a port arms push after he and the other protesters refused to leave. he then looked at us with a sense of panic before mysteriously finding the exit he said did not exist.

He was released on $3,000 bond.
CBS 2 did not report the arrest on its website or on its 10 p.m. newscast Saturday.

Savini, 46, grew up on Chicago’s Northwest Side and began as a intern for WMAQ-Channel 5’s investigative unit in 1987. He rejoined the NBC-owned station in 1993 from WROC-TV in Rochester, N.Y. In 2004, he jumped to CBS 2.
WHAT A CREEP!
But he’ll forever be remembered for “Hidden Hotel Horrors,” the 3½-minute sweeps piece he delivered in 1996 in which he pointed out “splotches of semen, vaginal fluid and blood” by showing an ultraviolet light passed over the bedding in three Chicago area hotel rooms.

State law provides a minimum dollar amount for traffic crashes. If both drivers have insurance, there must be damage in excess of $1,500 to make reporting mandatory. Minor crashes, type A accidents are handled between the drivers. This crash changes with allegations of DUI impairment and a possible battery that occurred at the scene. Savini panicked and fled the scene. He also was drinking with children in the car. He should have known better not to flee the scene. Naperville PD are very experienced with DUI arrests.

One of the worst things about Chicago broadcasting is that we have always treated the media like celebrities (radio and television) and the crooked politicians learned how to get favorable coverage by stroking the egos of the talking heads and inviting them to lunches and parties. It kills me when some of these "reporters" refer to themselves as "working journalists." There is an apt description in Britain where some of these people are called "news readers." Very few of these people does any actual investigative work. Their staff members read the newspaper and revise it and put it on the teleprompter. Just like Obama.

He'll have a good lawyer. Plus, what is to say that the driver from the other unit didn't threatened him. Plus, he technically could have relocated to where he felt safe and has seven days to file a traffic crash report because i know for a fact police tells them that to people from time to time. So, his lawyer will clear this up.

1/05/2014 02:28:00 AM
But he didn't "relocate to a place that was safe" he was stopped on his way home after fleeing the scene if a battery. And btw what part of Naperville isn't safe?

ABC said that it is their policy "Not to bash the competition"…I asked how reporting truthful news that the people have a right to know is "bashing" and the girl responded "yeah, its our policy." I said it seems like a policy that stinks of corruption and cover up in the news media, and it is the opposite of truthful, transparent reporting and she was silent. This is a f'ing joke! Dave Savini will have a good story to tell in AA meetings if he is lucky enough to make it that far.

No one is immune Dave. Alcohol is the great equalizer, it messes everyone up alike, reporters too. Some people learn their lessons the hard way.

Years back I saw a good documentary on the effects of drunk driving on the lives of the drunk drivers and people they injure or kill.

All interviews were of people convicted of killing someone while drunk behind the wheel. Then the program got to a self interview of the guy doing the narration, the producer of the film. He killed someone while driving drunk too.

Since he was a film producer, part of his sentence, after prison, was to make a film on the effects of fatal drunk driving accidents. It was a very well done film, done through the prism of compassion and humility obtained the hard way.

Maybe Mr Savini can take this spanking and become a more decent person, grateful that he didn't kill anybody.

'don't condone the kids driving under the influence, but there is no reason the media should give the extra coverage of it that they do. The kid is not a public figure.

This Savini guy, he's a public figure with resources to influence the public and its the sound of crickets as far as reporting on this guys DUI.

Even if it involves an allegedly drunk driver? Once he leaves that parking lot and drives onto the public way, with two children in the car, you don't think this changes the dynamics of the situation? That, plus according to the article, he pushed the other driver. This alleged battery certainly gives rise to police response.

You are correct, when the involved parties act like civilized human beings.

Everything changes when one or both of the drivers or the occupants of one or both of the involved vehicles start acting like assholes.

Plus, once others suspected Dave Savini was operating a vehicle while under the influence, was endangering the life of a child, and saw him flee the scene after giving the other driver a push, it was no longer a minor fender bender.

Think about it. Dave Savini amped up the whole situation and he should get it stuck right in his ass. Now, the situation would be perfect if Pam Zekman were the other driver.

Yeah...

Are we going to see the media chasing Savini down the street for "stepping in it" just like they've done to Chicago Coppers?

Are Pam Zekman and Frannie Spielman going to jump out of the bushes with a camera crew as he's walking up to his front door with family members in tow and stick a mic in his face just like they do to Chicago Coppers?

Oh yeah... They'll be sure to "accidentally" fiilm his address while camped out in front of his house. Just like they do with Chicago Coppers.

Is the local media going to run this story ad nauseam because "the public has the right to know" just like they do with Chicago Coppers?

Are they going to mine Dave Savini's personal information and public records for public tittilation and tantilization at 5, 6 and 10 just like they've done to Chicago Coppers who "step in it?"

Granted... Every profession tends to protect their own but the hypocrisy of Chicago Media is an eye-watering stink in the nostrils of people who still believe in out-moded ideals like "fair and balanced" and respect for boundaries.

You see, professional whores like Chicago Media are the very first to "sue for peace" when they have to eat some old big and nasty crow ass first, feathers and all...

"Aww c'mon guys! You know how it is! Why are you so mad? Let bygones be bygones! The public DOES have a right to know about what you cops are doing, RIGHT? You guys ARE public SERVANTS afterall, RIGHT? Tax payers pay you guys salaries, RIGHT? You Chicago Coppers are always so angry for no good reason. Didn't you know it was going to be like THIS when you signed up for the job?"

you know this town has taken an irreversible turn for the worse when there is more courtesy, fear and respectful distance is WILLINGLY & INTENTIONALLY ceded to Dude Inc., the Catered To Constituency and it's armed, hyper-violent and death worshipping militia...

These reasons are why we hope and pray that all members of local media find themselves on the shit end of The Great Backwards Pimp-Walking & Intentional Targeted Destruction of THEIR profession, earning power, post retirement security and way of life...

Just like what they're laughing up their sleeves about at Chicago Coppers.

FWIW... We would love to see these pansies fighting with some Coppers over that last questionable onion in the produce section to mince up into the cat food we may all be having to eat.

Local Media is just like Joe Shit-Head and the "Co-Nuh Sto' Boys."

"Who had said sump'n? Dis wat we do!"

Both sets of low life m/fers will fight under a Copper's window for the joy of climbing inside and rifling through the kids underwear drawer for laughs...

The Police didn't break it.

It's beyond the ability of The Police to fix it...

If The Police were so empowered to fix it, everybody would scream and demand they do it with one hand tied behind their backs.

Hey! Where's that hot-potato of a Morale Survey that's been locked away and bricked behind a wall?

You know... The one that was going to portray Chicago Coppers as grinning and happily picking cotton for their masters on the Chicago Plantation of Political & Media Fuckery?

Releasing it in full will prove once and for all (Snicker!) that this blog is nothing but a bunch of bitter, cynical, under-worked, over-paid, hate-crazed, gun loving, heavy-fisted, racist "conservatives" who are wrong-headed for being so resistant in giving up their old fashioned traditions and manly/martial ideals for the new and cutting edge espoused by a cabal of smarter than thou L.E. gypsies from New Yuck and a prancing, tutu clad alien shit-ass always a heartbeat from tearing off his itchy "borrowed" human skin.

Another slanted anti-Police hit piece in 3... 2... 1...

"The Police ARE the problem in Chicago... Once we fix THEM, everything else will fall in place."

While that's partially correct, if Dave would have exchanged his information with the other driver, this may have been taken care of later. Police get called when one driver doesn't cooperate. Usually that driver is drunk or revolked. He can pay a lawyer to straighten it out. Won't be cheap and if he ever tries to ask me anything, I'll be asking about his DUI accident.

Dear Friend who wrote the above:
I beg to differ with you. The "fender bender" happened around midnight. Savini was arrested at 12:20 a.m. Traffic crashes happening around midnight are FREQUENTLY the result of a drunk driver causing the crash. So, if we follow your logic, then all of those drunk drivers should be free to leave the scene with no police involvement, free to CONTINUE to drive drunk, possibly causing another crash in which someone may get seriously injured, or even KILLED!

My question to you is: if Savini never had police involved in this incident, which is apparently your after-the-fact wish, and then he continued to drive drunk, and then caused another crash in which a family member or friend of yours was killed, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY THEN? And in this situation, Savini had minors in his car, allegedly his children. He could have killed them too, which is why he was also charged with Child Endangerment.

Most police officers I know avoid making a DUI arrest like the plague. Doing the field sobriety tests correctly, writing the numerous reports, and then getting grilled on the stand by arrogant defense attorneys at traffic court, is no picnic. If that is your attitude too, fine, I understand, but it is wrong to flatly imply that when fender-benders happen at midnight, the police should not be called to the scene.

If every traffic crash victim and every police officer followed your advice, MANY innocent people on the road would be critically injured and/or killed over the years.

Why call the police? If you got hit by somebody who you believed to be intoxicated and had children in the car wouldn't you call the police?

Everybody makes mistakes, but when you act "holier than thou" and make a mistake you are going to get called out on it. Savini did an investigation on how many fireman, paramedics and policemen had gotten DUIs and that 80% of them beat it. Here is a news flash Dave, when I did my DUI training about ten years ago, 90% of people beat their DUIs in Chicago, only 10% beat their DUIs in the suburbs. I wonder how many of those cops and firemen had children in their car when they got their DUI? How many committed a battery? How many fled the scene?

You got a DUI in Naperville and additional charges, you better get a real good lawyer and hope for a good plea offer. Your career probably isn't finished, but now you have two paths to choose from. You can eat your piece of humble pie and use a little more discretion and perspective when you judge other people OR you can continue with your attitude like another Chicago reporter who had an alcohol related arrest and continue to exaggerate and bash the public sector.

This was a minor parking lot fender bender by all accounts, with no injuries. Why call the police. In a large number of cities small, medium and large you don't call the police for a fender bender. Unless there are serious injuries they won't respond anyway. What you do is exchange insurance information and let your insurance companies handle any damages. The police are better employed spending their time on things other than minor fender bender

What an idiot you are. The police being called prevented him from continuing to drive drunk with his kids. And are you forgetting he committed a battery ? Police should have been called. More police do prevent crime in this case those kids are safe.

I can't imagine there will be any type of "motion to fix" out there in Naperville.

A while back a Naperville Police Sergeant stopped another Naperville Police Sergeant and had him arrested and processed for DUI. You think guys like that will give a break to a reporter who jackpots police?

Savini can count on spending at least $5,000 on a lawyer and possibly getting fired.

The same thing will happen to him as to many others, he will get a good DUI lawyer who will plead him to reckless driving and he will get supervision, get to keep his license, etc, etc, etc, he is a POS who was raised around Grand and Austin and went to Weber High School, he was taunted and teased while in grammar school and that is why he turned to the news and bullies everyone.

The police had to be called to intervene. The man was drunk and he had minor children in the vehicle.

A couple of years ago, in the North suburbs, a police officer let a young motorist go after he promised to return to his home that was a few minutes away. In the space of a few blocks, the drunk driver struck a concrete wall which was part of a railroad viaduct killing himself in the process. But he was only a minute from his home.

In the aftermath, the parents sued and recovered several hundred thousands of dollars because the young adult would have lived had he been placed under arrest.

DUI, two counts; battery; leaving the scene; endangering the kids. That isn't any type A any more. He sort of jacks it up there. And he did that precisely because he was a celebrity of sorts. He can stand the same consequences as anyone else.

I sat with a copper who was under arrest for a DUI. Type A accident. He was in the hospital getting the blood draw sobbing like a grieving widow because he knew how badly he screwed up as a police officer.

Sorry for Mr Savini but he now has to face the music just as anybody has to face the music. He can be reasonably certain that in Naperville of DuPage County he will get a fair shake in court. Not like here in Cook County, the land of misdemeanor murder.

I'm really glad his sister is nice and that he helped some people out with their insurance. I still don't know how you are clinging to the argument that the police should not have been called. I would call the photograph of a license plate a part of exchanging information and if you were pushed away that is a battery and also a refusal to share your information. This guy has no problem putting a camera in the face or on the address of policemen which will be aired to millions of people, but he has a problem with a cell phone camera recording his license plate after a fender bender. He does an investigative piece on DUIs with police and fire but flees after a crash with two kids in the car? He is the definition of a HYPOCRITE. Everyone makes mistakes, he won't get fired for it and he could end up a better person as a result. If he gets sober his personal relationships probably will get better and he learned a lesson in life without running anyone over.
Time will tell.

That and there was a certain commander of 018 who ended the CPD beach detail because there was no crime there. When the police left, crime along the lake came back. The only thing that kept the beast away from the lakefront robbing and pillaging the sheep was the police detail. When it was a vacuum, the shithead filled it in.

I got in tug of war with a crowd of little jagoff Cabrini shitheads who thought they wanted my bicycle more than I wanted it. They didn't. That was a Sunday afternoon with crowds of people all around. Not one yuppie scum stopped to help or even look. That was the last time I went riding along the lake. At least ten years ago.

Yes he DOES! as a matter of fact, he should have his life very loudly and publicly DESTROYED on the 5, 6 and 10 o'clock news on every station and in both major papers... You know... Just like what would happen to a Policeman. Right?

A Policeman is never given the mercy and consideration that you wet-eyes loudly plead for on Savini's behalf.

The police are better employed spending their time on things other than minor fender benders.

Unless the other party is refusing to exchange information, attempting to leave the scene without exchanging information, pushes you when you go to take a picture of his license plate, is drunk and has kids in the car. Then you should probably call the police.

His last post is dated January 3rd, before his incident. Stop hating on the guy. He was not bragging.

His fb page has been heavily edited since 'his incident'.

Ha Ha Dave. You are fucked out here because you have no clout in the Du Page. Berlin isn't going to risk his reputation helping him out either. And we jurors are not impressed with his sissy bitch tv act. I would strongly suggest he plead out if he has a BAC over .08. If I am called he is toast as long as the cops can demonstrate he was DUI. I'm a Du Page juror who will convict a ham sandwich. I don't like crime in my neighborhood. Keep it in the city where it belongs. Naperville is not Chicago. I think taking your kids to Taco Bell and feeding them that crap is prima facie child endangerment too. What is the matter with you?

". . . feel free to share the link here is my investigation into an Elmwood Park police sergeant that has escaped being fired after a series of allegations over the last few years.. "
From Dave Savini's Facebook post on 02 Jan 2014

Hey Dave, they're allegations, remember. You want to get fired for other people (co-workers)who ALLEGE you are an AH. Oh, sorry, bad example, everyone thinks you're an AH.
And you continued earlier saying ". . . I live for this shi#," When you're being followed around like a lost puppy, for the current mess you got into, remember KARAMA IS A BITCH ! ! ! And it's about to slap you in the face.
