More Snow, More Cold
Thank goodness it isn't January around these parts. We heard that it can really get cold then:
- A winter snow storm is sweeping across the Chicago area and up to a foot of snow could fall in the next 24 hours, causing headaches and hassles at Chicago's airports, with hundreds of cancellations and delays across the board.
Winter loosened its icy grip a bit Saturday as temperatures were rising to the low 30s. But the reprieve will be brief.
After some freeing drizzle, six to 10 inches of snow is expected to fall between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening in Chicago, western and northern suburbs, according to the National Weather Service. The weather service's storm warning will stay in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday.
Wind chills are expected to be somewhere between 40 and 70 below zero.
And you think it was just the streets that were unplowed and unsalted? The city can't even keep the runways clear at the airport:
And you think it was just the streets that were unplowed and unsalted? The city can't even keep the runways clear at the airport:
- A plane slid off the tarmac at O'Hare International Airport Saturday, a Chicago Department of Aviation spokesperson confirmed.
Spirit Airlines flight No. 245 bound for Las Vegas exited a taxiway around 5:45 p.m., officials said.
The plane was set to depart with 145 passengers on board when a wheel slid off the tarmac, according to Chicago Fire Media Affairs.
Chicago seems out of practice dealing with a major snowfall.

In all the media hysteria about the three days of frigid cold coming Sunday through Tuesday...
they are neglecting to mention temperatures are expected to hit 30 on Wednesday, 28 on Thursday, 37 on Friday and 45 on Saturday.
A Polar Vortex is sweeping down upon the city. Things will be grim for a few days. We are getting a taste of what advanced global warming is like. 2013 was the fourth hottest year on record. It may be too late to do anything about global warming. We will just have to learn to live with it.
At least the old mayor kept the streets clear of snow & the alleys clean of garbage.
And the global warming fiasco has caused the Australian ship to ask the USA Coast Guard to rescue them then to rescue the Chinese ship and then to rescue the Russian ship that was on a hunt for global warming in the Antarctic (which is now Summertime there). They ended up not finding global warming in the Summertime Antarctic, instead they found expanding--thickening ice freeze; so the mad scientists ended up playing games, exercising, doing yoga and being watched by Penguins...all at an enormous amount to many including millions of dollars that USA Taxpayers will end up paying when the USA Coast Guard gets to them in 7 days.
We could SCREAM....hope they send the bill to Al Gore and the Dumbocrats.
Let's see how many shootings/homicides occur during the next few days, because weather has nothing to do with crime.
New York gets six inches of snow and a cold blast and the mayor tells the citizens to stay home and don't go out unless you have too, give the city a chance to clean up.
We going to get 6 more additional inches and subzero weather and the schools will be open???? So let's put 20,000 + more cars on the road Monday (teachers, clerks, etc...) countless buses so that the city can provide a baby sitting service on Monday. Really!
From a recent retiree...
The thoughts and prayers of my family go out to all of you who will be out in this God-awful freeze.
Help anyone you can...
Take care of each other because this kind of weather kills people.
God Bless the iPhone Patrol Unit on Michigan Ave. Department commendations should be handed out for keeping the Apple Pickers away...
Stay safe/warm brothers.
Hi SCC and Kids. 10 G here. Got home late from my 5-day Caribbean Cruise. A little sunburn and tired after lots of partying. Again thank you for all your support during a most profitable NFL season. Time to get back to work. In today's Wild Card matchups I put 10 large on Cincy minus the 7 and the UNDER 46 in the Packer game. Hey Biff did you get our postcard yet?
No salt for you!
Dozens could die or be maimed because of this unprecedented cold weather. Yet, snow/ice removal, snow plows and salt trucks only increase the carbon footprint that caused the frigid event in the first place. Obama, is ending his needed vacation and flying back to the mainland so that he can guide the helm of government, as the nation battles climatic chaos. Kudos to Chicago's first responders as they battle severe storms to maintain order and save lives.
The amount you talk about the "amazing" snow and cold is directly proportional to your ability or lack of to think for yourself. People are just getting more stupid for lack of a better term.
Sit back and watch the show. Did Tiny make it back yet from vacation? Maybe he should leave his bags packed because his minions are doing a shit job of handling the snow removal on the streets and at the airports.
"...We going to get 6 more additional inches and subzero weather and the schools will be open????..."
and Safe Passage will be fully operational--hundreds of CPD man hours wasted and woe to the crossing guards and those passage workers...its a big deal - very important- just ask chief Gulliford (who must have lost part of his mind to demand that this bs continue)
Two words for Rahm - Michael Bilandic.
Totally agree with the observation that Rahm Emanuel (pronounced "Bilandic") cannot get his act together in terms of snow removal. Was at O'Hare Airport on January 1st and the access roads, including Bessie Coleman Drive, were almost impassable. I would have thought that this would have been a priority. Have to believe the lousy snow removal is related to the city's unwillingness to pay overtime to plow drivers. Al Sanchez is out of the slammer. Maybe Chicago could pay him a hefty consulting fee to show them how it is supposed to be done.
So does this mean crime will be down for the first week of January '14, compared to January '12?
Where's Rahm? What about Cholly Williams...the master of disaster? No snow plows in the 41st Ward along the side streets all day Saturday, when it wasn't snowing. Now compound today's dumping with a quick freeze.
Alderman Oh-No O'Connor another absent tool.
Maybe Cholly can send recruits out to Englewoods' with shovels.
Hey news media. Why isn't anyone questioning where our dubious leader mayor has been during all this bad weather? Come on who's got the stones to call him on it. Love how our leaders always say it's economic business trip when we all know it's mainly vacation. No one stays that long for business. Did the whole family go too? Hope he gets buried by more than snow in the next election. Pos.
Global warming is a total scam, an excuse to re-distribute wealth. 2013, was not the fourth hottest year on record. It was much hotter centuries age, before so called man-made greenhouse gases.
and through it all. never a shortage of spokespeople.
Not forgetting how to deal with the snow. It is the cutbacks going onto save money. This has been a practice since Daley was in office. Remember when Wies was still here and the city didn't do the side-streets and they were crowing about no shootings even though even the bad guys couldn't get around. They don"t pre salt like they use to and cut OT. This fits right into the Superintendents plan. Pray for bad weather but never blame the weather.
Aunty Barbara Byrd Bennett and her
puppeteer mayor emanuel says that
tomorrow is a regular school day regardless of the unplowed sidewalks
that the little ones have to navigate while toting those heavy
backpacks and the sub-zero temperatures and wind chill factors.
But don't fret, it's for the children. Oh, and the Safe Passage
Aides are expected to be at their
posts on the corners for their
entire shift, regardless of how cold it gets.
Where is the Rahm? His kids school is closed. CPS id open. The absurd continues.

Our mayor's heart is as cold as the weather but it just never thaws.
12.26am.....you're a fucking knucklehead....keep believing the Al Gore bullshit about man made climate change....you really fell for it.
The cause of the warming, the end of it, and why temperatures are headed down are no longer a mystery.
Curiosity resulted in the discovery of the two primary drivers of average global temperatures that explain the reported measurements since before 1900 with 90% accuracy and credible estimates back to 1610. CO2 is not one of them. http://agwunveiled.blogspot.com/

If you live in Chicago and can't handle cold weather and snow in the winter, you are what we call a "pussy."
It gets cold here and it snows. It gets colder in Minnesota and other places north, but they manage to somehow survive without all of the crybaby reporting we have to put up with from our pussy socialist reporters.
So suck it up, metrosexuals. Go get yourself a hot latte and huddle together for warmth. Spring will be here soon, bitches.
My fireplace keeps me warm and cozy. Anyone wish to stop by for one of my famous Peppermint Patties?
for the gauche among you--a Peppermint Patty is hot chocolate and peppermint schnapps.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!

During the year I often meet the garbage crew and bring them chilled bottles of water (no city tax paid). At Christmas I meet them and give them each a $20 gift card from Burger King because I know they stop there for lunch.
It's also a good Idea to take care of the Letter Carrier. And if I ever saw the local Beat Cops...
How about ploughing police parking lots so we can get out and do our jobs .
Just watching the 5p ch. 5 news. Schools all over are closed except for...that's right, CPS. CPS officials say that the schools are the safest place for the chilruns. Another example of the liberal government telling parents what's best for their kids. One question though, with estimated windchill of -45° how do the kids get there, not to mention the extended distance for the safe passage kids?
No rahm on the news. isn't he still away on vacation?
Singapore I believe. And if he is back, will we be blessed with another media blitz of photos of him taking the EL to the hall tomorrow?
JUST IN, CPS just announced they are closing Monday after all. The calls must have been swamping them.

The truth about the Chicago Board of Education and the Chicago Public Schools:
1) They do not want to postpone classes that will impact the ability to receive per capita payments from other levels of government which are attendance based -- Johnny and Jane cannot read nor write, but their warm bodies count for cash purposes if they are present for roll call;
2) When the schools close many children from poorer neighborhoods go without eating. The kids may not like school, but the subsidized school meals at breakfast and lunch are the only nutrition that most are likely to see on many days.
As for the current weather related crisis, WTF is our mayor? In Los Angeles or Miami?
I didn't see one kid walking around with a shovel trying to pick up a few bucks today.Everbody must be a honor student doing their studies anticipating a ride to high school or college.
Is Rahm in Hawaii with his Bud. Train from Ohare Terminal 5 stood still for 40 min because of frozen rails. Ohare is a mess didn't hear of flights taking off.

Rahm is still in Indonesia and is heading back here tomorrow, per the emergency services press conference this morning.
Have to believe the lousy snow removal is related to the city's unwillingness to pay overtime to plow drivers. Al Sanchez is out of the slammer. Maybe Chicago could pay him a hefty consulting fee to show them how it is supposed to be done.
You betcha! Was driving my folks around on the 1st--crappy streets. But I noticed starting around 4PM, the salt trucks were out.
Lets see 4 to midnight=8 hours of holiday pay on the holiday, but no OT on the holiday, cause 1201AM would be the 2nd of January. Clever that Rahm, huh?
All weekend CPS stayed with the message that schools would be open. Finally Sunday afternoon they changed their mind. Nothing like giving parents enough time to find sitters for their kids. Are the powers that be so out of touch they can't make any common sense decisions anymore in a timely manner? It's not like they didn't have enough notice on the extreme cold coming our way.
And that little dancing pos is not back in town yet? Hope he slips on ice and falls on his ass once his feet flutter to the ground here.
Living on a side street sucks! Living in the middle of the block sucks even more. And what the f*** is the logic of blowing or throwing the snow in to the street? These are the same people who blow their leaves into the steet. I feel better now!

How soon we forget. He actually had a poor track record toward the end of his term. Icy streets left unsalted and side streets that they never got around to clearing.
Wow, it really has to suck to be a CPS big wig and a mayor on vacation who can't make the people bend to the city's will! The worst part is that the mayor and his lapdogs have to be genuinely pissed that they were pressured into doing the right thing, despite their lies that schools would be ready...safe passage workers on their routes (really, since week 1 they haven't been there, but I would like the ig to check and see if the cps checks are still coming in, despite not showing up to work for 5 months). This is exactly the reason we need unions, because of sick attitudes by our employer(s).
PS. Sick attitude isn't making the decision to make teachers work or kids to school, it pertains to the reluctance to change the decision until last minute, only because of peer pressure and scrutiny. (Karen Lewis also added her two-cents right before the announcement of closure, makes it look like she influenced the city's decision...) this city is such a joke.

Forget that 'taking care' of these guys - you ALREADY do that when you pay the myriad amounts of ever-increasing taxes and fees in the Shitty.
You have a job, you get paid for it - is it too much for me to expect that you actually do it w/o me greasing your palm?
Sure, if you go ABOVE and BEYOND and help me out with something, I'll toss you some $$$ because I'm returning the favor how I can - but honestly, this expected Holiday Tipping business is just so much bullshit...
I had a guy once do my driveway - he happened by and asked if I wanted it done. I did. He quoted me a price. He did a nice job. I paid him. While I was writing the check, he asked for a tip. I never called him back for future work.

Don't fall for those socialist propaganda lies. There are no ghetto kids going hungry with mama getting free food from her link card. And if they are, guess who is to blame? Mama the breeder. This savagery is caused by the socialists, and maintained by the socialists. Do you think the answer is a communist run school system? Get your head out of your ass.

It's called "paying it forward".
always take care of those who take care of you. Those people did a little extra for me when I asked no problem and watched out for my property. What does a few bottles of water cost and just showing some appreciation?
Years ago, we had a Michigan Avenue foot detail. The sound of their whistles in cadence to the traffic is one of my great memories. Just before Christmas they would all come into the old 18th District Station loaded down with shopping bags from the store on the Mag Mile. No matter how bad the weather you could never get a spot on that detail in December. But you could in January or February.

I don't normally throw snow into the street, but Saturday it was above freezing, so throwing the snow into the street meant the cars ran over it and it melted right into the sewer. Our street was pretty clear Saturday, even the parking spaces.
If it's below freezing, there's no benefit, and the snow should go up on the parkway.

Um, not that I like the guy, but the media's been pretty clear that he left China before Christmas, to JOIN HIS FAMILY ON VACATION in Indonesia.
who in the fuck is responsible for plowing the lot in 005???????
Someone called us "pussies" for complaining about the weather and pointed up how other people deal without elsewhere.
Once upon a time, I lived in Minnesota. Wintering there is different. Cold, snow and wind to be sure, but with differences:
1) With a few exceptions, the building density is not as great, so there are places to dump the snow and few people have to fight for parking spaces. More people have driveways.
2) The roads are built much better and the snow plows do not tear up asphalt spread as thin as peanut butter in Chitown. In most places, every street gets plowed.
3) The snow is usually powder as opposed to the wet and sticky "heart attack" snow that is the norm in Chicago. In Minnesota, you can sweep the snow or use a leaf blower to clear the steps.
4) After massive snow storms, Minnesotans are realistic. Things slow down and you dig out and get to work or where you need to be when you can. What is insane in Chicago is that too many people want to fight the elements and keep normal business hours without reference to the weather.
Chicago was known for its scorching Summers and brutal Winters. Maybe after many mild Winters things are back to normal.
Sure didnt stop shootings in my district.
Been here since the projects and I swear we have more shootings now than before.
Lack of leadership and no one wants to work for this A hole of a boss. So whatever way the wind blow when you don't take care of your people

Like, the 7th coldest temperature ever recorded here, per Tom Skilling.
