Not The Professor?!

  • Russell Johnson, the veteran character actor who appeared in science fiction films and Westerns before earning enduring fame as “The Professor” on the classic 1960s sitcom “Gilligan's Island,” died on Thursday at the age of 89, his agent said.

“He died at 5:21 a.m. of natural causes at home in Washington state,” agent Michael Eisenstadt said, adding that Johnson's wife and his daughter were at his side.

“Gilligan's Island,” which was created by producer Sherwood Schwartz, ran for three seasons on the CBS network, from 1964 to 1967, and attracted even more popularity in syndication.

The show followed four men and three women stranded on a tropical island after being shipwrecked on the S.S. Minnow. Johnson, a decorated World War Two veteran who was a bombardier on a B-24 Liberator shot down over the Philippines in 1945, played Professor Roy Hinkley, simply called “The Professor.”
That leaves Ginger and Mary Ann as the last surviving occupants of the SS Minnow.

Like we said.....slow news day.

Well, since only Mary Ann and Ginger are left, the question begs an answer...who'd you rather?

And if the professor was so damn smart that he could make a radio out of a couple of coconuts, why couldn't he just fix the damn hole in the boat?

There was a time I would have not minded being trapped on a island with those two beauties!

But now that they are in their 80's, I am going to pass on that fantasy.

From TV weatherman Mike Caplan...

"Very sorry to hear of Russell Johnson's death today. I had the privilege of meeting him (and Dawn Wells) at a holiday party I emceed. The afternoon before that event, I had lunch with him and we spoke at length about his careers, acting as well as military. While he will be most remembered for his role as The Professor, let us not forget to acknowledge his distinguished service to our country in WWII.

He was a skilled bombardier in the Air Force, flying more than 40 missions in B-24s. His job--get the plane into position to delivery the bombs on target. I recall him describing how he used the bomb sights and the great pride he took when he knew the mission was successful. Almost every flight, he feared for his life knowing that the Japanese could shoot him down. But he stayed focused as a very young man on the task he was charged to complete.

Eventually his luck in the air ran out. When his Liberator was shot from sky the crash badly broke his ankles. But he survived--earning numerous decorations for his valor and service to country.

I came away with an enormous amount of respect for him, having learned of "the Professor's" prior life. RIP."

Isn't it amazing when you think back how TV has changed in 40-50 years?

Back then the comedy was innocent and the "action" shows like Gunsmoke and The Rifleman taught moral lessons dealing with right and wrong in every episode.

Is it any wonder the country has devolved into to what it is today?

I remember asking my mother (I am old enough to have seen Gilligan eps first run) where they all went to the bathroom---7 year old kid logic.

Dawn Wells was recently on "Chopped" looking pretty good for someone almost 80.

1/17/2014 12:05:00 AM

There are rumors with every test about answers being leaked, secret study groups and the like. Unless you have hard evidence you don't have a damned thing. If you studied you did well enough to not need leaked answers. From your routine inquiries it's safe to assume you did not adequately prepare for the test.

So quit grasping at thin air - it won't help you and it only makes you look like a sniveling, entitled, hair gel crybaby.

"Gilligan's Island" was canceled due to the dislike of a network executive's wife for the program. The show still had respectable ratings when it was not renewed after ninety-eight episodes. Its continued popularity resulted in several reunion specials being broadcast.

That's because we stopped standing up to communism and instead voted it into the White House. Their subversive tactics have succeeded and unless we fight back, it'll be over for freedom and liberty in this country.

Re: The Breitbart Article Why Millenials Make Terrible Cops. I read the article, and while the article makes a few interesting points, I would like to point out since we have started doing reports on computers, we don't have a stack of case reports to read. My FTO suggested when I was new, to read other P.O.s reports. In addition, the current job market, risk of lawsuits, less time spent training by police departments, all of these things contribute. Putting two or three officers with an FTO does not give the P.P.O. a good chance to learn. Finally, we used to help each other more, there is less of that. All of these factors contribute. As I go along in my Police career, I feel I am always learning something new. If not, it is too easy to stagnate.
