This is an excerpt from older post.I found it to be very important as I was a victim of bosses who tormented us older officers into taking retirement sooner than we intended to do. "He has no incentive to keep anyone happy. He wants you to quit at 20 years, earlier if something else comes your way. Rahm's driving ambition is to destroy the pension system, and he's well on his way. Pissing off and stressing out coppers so they quit in disgust years earlier than planned."
I feel I was bullied by bosses. Perhaps I'll sue.
There are some fools I hope don't pass.... 124's SW who can't teach for shit. Thinks he is gods gift to I.T. because he can pass college exams. Has no fucking clue how to even use CLEAR but considers himself an I.T. expert. You should have never gotten back on the job you fukn stroke.
Best of luck to everyone. As someone who made it in the last class on SCORE, it can be done. I had no phone call, no study groups, no berstein, nothing. Just went over and over the orders till I could practically recite them word for word. After all that, it still took me almost 7 years to get promoted. But I did it and you can too. For all those that truly gave it your best effort, you should be proud of yourselves for thinking enough of yourself to work your ass off to better your situation in life. I hope it pays off!

Good luck to everyone taking the Sgts test this morning. Just wanted to take a second to send a thank you to all the POs in 016, both on and off duty, who came to my aid after my car was broadsided and burst into flames on the way to a burg in progress in Edison Park. I was lucky to walk away with minor bumps and bruises but even luckier to be part of a fellowship where we always have each other's back. Me and my family are very appreciative of the support and assistance.

I know you're (not "your") not big on censorship, and now I see why. The "Trader" did a perfect job of showing his ass, and ignorance, Only 18 more years until he hits 29? Means he's an 11 year kiddie, who will never make 29 with that attitude.
Good Luck Everyone taking the test, and remember you can make Sergeant and even Lieutenant on your own based on your test score with no clout. Now the bad news, all the clout people that scored below you will be the merit appointees assigned to the good districts and units while you slug it out in the Ghetto. Then they will pass you up and make Captain and Commander while you are still in patrol. If anyone tells you otherwise they are lying to your face. The fact is the more things change the more they stay the same. My advise to you is get out of patrol ASAP if you can because it is the road to nowhere and it's not what you know but who. Now go and get those stripes because they are yours! Good Luck!

The academy was almost devoid of instructors Friday....seems the existing sergeants chose to look the other way when the test candidates didn't show for work. Must be nice.....

I hope this was a joke. You're (not your) not even 1/2 way to retirement. If you are truly that jaded do yourself and your (proper use there) family a favor and find something else to do. Nobody was sentanced to The Chicago Police Department. You chose to work here. Go find something that makes you happy because you must be areal bear to be around at home.
So I haven't even started yet and I was already told by someone that he knows that an ANOV will be on the test because he got an inside track. I can't verify the validity but if true, I can only imagine how much more info is give to a select few. Very disheartening.

Oh my. Glad I retired and won't take the test for sergeant, because if I made it, I would have a jolly good time reading your reports. If you are going to name call, please learn how to spell first, so you don't embarrass yourself, and the rest of us. Better yet, why not resign now and save us all.
In the SE corner of the academy, all you have to do is bring the sgt.s coffee in the morning and you can show up any time, or not show at all....they'll cover for you.

I have rarely read a more compelling paragraph describing the need to go seek alternate employment. Go apply for a job somewhere else or you might find yourself alone staring down the barrel of your pistol one day.
This is no bullshit, I have known people with fewer outward symptoms of total disillusionment decide it isn't worth going on. Get out, do something that will make you happy. The police department obviously isn't it.
I once felt close to how you describe and sought a change of work location. Then I found a new partner who became my best friend and everything changed. Find such a change for yourself, for your sake and your family's sake.

WOW! I feel sorry for you for you seem to be such a miserable person. Most white shirts do not sell their souls for a promotion, theyjust want to have more security for themselves and their families. While not the answers, but the actual test questions were shopped around Friday evening to some lucky bosses kids/relatives. They had to put in the 'hard' work to look up and memorize the answers to the specific orders and scenarios.
. If McCarthy is sacrificed for political reasons, it would be a mistake. No one will do better. Do you really believe that any of the superintendents that were appointed under Daley did better? Better for the citizens, better for the cops? Politics is too entrenched in this town, especially racial politics. The black political class has been crying for a black superintendent of police for years now. They want the power back and it is now starting to look like they will get it.

Agreed SCC....This guys sounds like a complete ahole on the job and most likely in his personal life too. He should just leave now and stop taking up space. I know the job has some drawbacks(mainly political and some backstabbing for personal gain by a few)but aside from that it's still a great job and I enjoy going to work.

This IS painful to read. As a person who has 34 years on the job, and still working the street, and having been promoted,(without a phone call or clout), I still enjoy my job. I still do my job to the best of my ability. It's not about the mayor, or the citizens or the money or the promotions. It's about choosing a vocation, put your heart and soul into doing the right thing, having a good work ethic and caring about what you do. Have some personal pride. If you are looking forward to retirement with 10 years on the job, then you probably should be looking for another job. And I don't mean this in a derisive way. I mean for your own good and the good of the people that have to work with you everyday, get out. Do something for yourself, I'm sure you will be much happier.
For those of you who are taking the exam, I applaud your efforts. Keep striving to be better than you are today. However, you must remember that you are not measured by the promotions you receive, but by the quality of the job you do everyday.

Off Topic but I don't see it posted anywhere.
Rumors on the 5th floor are that Debra Kirby has put in her papers and the department will announce it soon. Kirby took a beating with the Abate case, she's now in hot water again with a case currently in court for the victims of SOS. Rumored she said she just wants out before she's left to defend her actions in a pending whistle bower lawsuit she's named in. Sounds like she knows she about to take another beating.
Can anyone confirm this, and who is replacing Kirby?

I retired as a sgt after 26 years. had some fun, laughed, locked up some bad guys, helped a few folks out, had some good partners, put my kids through school, put up with some bullshit both internal and external, paid off a house and am now fairly comfortable on my pension plus a little gig that I like to work.
Reading the post above makes me sadder than sad. To the person that wrote it...It's a job, not a prison sentence. Find something else to do. You only get one life.
I miss the clowns, but not the circus. Stay safe everybody.
Glad it's over and I can get my life back a little. Surprised how many people worked up right to the end, and heard a lot of comments that people didn't finish the last section. Oh my what a day ! I got up at 0500 and read a few more special orders while eating my delicious and nutritious breakfast. I left my domicile and headed to "undisclosed location" for the test. I use undisclosed location because this department would never ever risk OPSEC and disclose the location of a site containing half of its officers at once. Anyway I took the train down, jumped on a divvy and rode my way in. My nipples were a tiny bit chaffed due to the no outer jackets rule but I persevered!
I docked my divvy and entered and who do I see???? Yes you guessed it Inspector Expressway! He looked paler than usual and a little bit sad. Sad because everyone in that building avoided him like he had tuberculosis. I hid behind a potted plant until he walked away and then went and exchanged war stories with a few of my old buddies from the old west side that are now up in the Rogers park area. Good times !
The test itself was not too bad... If you read orders and studied it was pretty easy... I especially liked the question about the stinky officer with the crummy uniform... I can think of a few coworkers in 019 that that applies to... Anyway I hope everyone gets what they want and enjoys their stripes if they get them.
One side complaint... To the gentleman who chose to wear skinny jeans that were too short and a shirt that was also too short, please wax your buttocks... It was like looking at an angry one eyed beaver for four hours!

test was hard. test was not easy. many many people did not finish on time. I finished all of the questions but now as I sit here and think about some of the questions I know I forgot to put certain answers in and left out simple stuff on certain questions. WTF! Nobody to blame but myself. Oh well, theres always the detectives test.. whenever the hell that happens.
HOLY SHIT!
I sat in section 17. There was a west-side great-great-great grandmother stumbling around my section, Marva B. When it came time to hand out the test booklets, she began randomly throwing them out like a dealer in Vegas! If there were supposed to be different versions of the test, this is a MAJOR problem! Neither of the numbers on my booklets matched each other or my seat assignment. Just before the test started, a few proctors began scrambling trying to match the booklets and seat assignments. I had my hand raised and was ignored due to the chaotic scene that was unfolding.
As the test was starting, good ole Marva comes over yelling, "Naw! The numbers don't matter none!" The scrambling proctors then gave up their efforts. Apparently SHE was the authority??!!
During the test Marva and another proctor were walking down the aisle OH GUUUURLing each other. Christ!
When the proctor came to collect my test I asked if it was a problem none of these numbers matched each other or my seat assignment. The proctor told me, "Yeah, I guess it does matter. If you tell us, though, we're supposed to write down the numbers on your booklets." She then showed me a clipboard with a bunch of names and numbers scratched on it.
As the guy to my right handed in his material, good ole Marva assisted by reading the numbers off the booklets to the proctor with the clipboard. It appeared that the THIRD time relaying numbers to each other they got it right. I'm sure.
Holy shit.

Really, If your life is that terrible, why are you still here making it terrible for everyone else. I'm sure you are the guy who can always cheer other coppers up when morale is bad too. It actually depresses me to know that there are human beings out there that are so miserable and sad that they just want years of their life to pass by as fast as possible. You all may think i'm crazy and i'm brainwashed, however where is your dignity, where is your honor....its a disgrace taking a "BS" exam that already has a list of preferred individual on the waiting list to receive there stripes...
I just wish the testing process was more professional. And I hope a new company is selected by the city for the next one. Both tests seemed a little weird to me.

Best of luck to everyone. As someone who made it in the last class on SCORE, it can be done. I had no phone call, no study groups, no berstein, nothing. Just went over and over the orders till I could practically recite them word for word. After all that, it still took me almost 7 years to get promoted. But I did it and you can too. For all those that truly gave it your best effort, you should be proud of yourselves for thinking enough of yourself to work your ass off to better your situation in life. I hope it pays off!

For this test if you did not take a good Study Group, you have No Chance. It was an investment in my future, so I spent the money. Well Worth it! Guys who went know what I am talking about. It's called the Edge.

I made Sgt and Lt off my test scores and I always remembered that this job is all what you make it. Even when working in terrible districts I still made the best of each and every day. After the test today, one of the "proctors," stated to me, "Hey Officer you from 63rd St?" In which I said, no. She then stated," Yes, you is, I see you around there, see this fool next to me, you need to arrest his @$$, he be selling weed at 63rd and Sacramento." Male "proctor" states, a number of profanities back to her.
Looking back on the situation I should have filed a complaint. I was brain dead after the test and just wanted to leave. These are the people responsible for handling the results of the test. I don't feel there is any integrity from the beginning steps of this process, let alone the merit process.

Nope....it was about the same as last two exams....so if this was your first time? this exam was about the same....actually easier because it wasn't really essay but bullet points. Pretty well put together....its all about time management....the last 3 questions were the easiest ones too.
Highlight of the morning was the dude in the Angry Birds jammies, Thank you. You gave me a laugh and eased up test tension.

You're HIGH! Throw out a section of the test because you couldn't finish it in 4 HOURS?? Lawsuit? You've gotta be smoking. Not to put anyone down who ran out of time, but that's the way test taking goes. You don't toss a section because someone couldn't finish. You probably were on a T Ball team that doesn't keep score because mommy and daddy don't wanna make you feel bad if you lose. You win some and lose some. 4 hours was plenty of time to do 67 multiple choice questions and make some bullet points on scenarios. It was not hard.
What I WOULD like to know, is about that girl who finished her test in an hour. I saw her too and didn't think there was any way in God's green acres that she could have finish the test in an hour unless she was given answers ahead of time. There were many adept and sharp officers who were there the entire 4 hours and either finished at the last moment or didn't finish at all. No way you could accurately complete that in an hour's time.

Looking over candidates running for office and saw City Wide Nenad M running for trustee. I saw that he also is a sustained Rule 14 officer who received six month suspension. Should this matter for a Union trustee or he served his time? I think it looks bad for the Union to have a trustee candidate be a proven liar. The votes will tell.
Since I usually complain about city politics here, I should be fair and use my typical fervor to comment on today's exam. Honestly, it was a decent exam- I was surprised. The scenarios ( or whatever the hell they called them) were realistic and it reflected the crap you see in this job. The checking was a smoother- no problems! The questions were tough, but there's little to really beef about. I studied, but could have done more. The time limit was tight but the few complaints I heard are really bull! I stayed until the end checking and second guessing- there were 1500 at the end and half were already done like me! As we walked out the few who didn't finish only had a few to go. I talked to a few guys after who bitched (really 1) about this. If you listened to the instructions they prepared you for this. They told us which sections carried more weight! If you didn't finish section II, you are at fault- they said it was the highest weighted section! They told us section III carried the least weight. There were 3 questions- it is going to be worth a few points! If you didn't finish, this was on you- lots did and they likely prepared better. I've heard the poem ended questions will take some time- 2 months to grade, then another month or so to coordinate the release. I'll be happy if we get results by mid April, impatient in May and pissy in June. Anyway, glad this is over. Good luck to all!

Hey trained observer, the blonde hair should have been a clue! I recall seeing a bell curve distribution that depicted the length of time to complete a test relative to the score obtained. HaHa!! I know who wrote this, just by your spelling and terrible attitude. I have some news you're not going to like. You won't make the 18 years to retirement. With your (see how I did that?) attitude and general disposition, you will either have a heart attack on the job or show your displeasure for working with the rest of us by getting indicted. Looking over candidates running for office and saw City Wide Nenad M running for trustee. I saw that he also is a sustained Rule 14 officer who received six month suspension. Should this matter for a Union trustee or he served his time? I think it looks bad for the Union to have a trustee candidate be a proven liar. The votes will tell.

To the young officer (traders) I am still on the job after 38 years .When I look back over my career,I remember the good times and bad.The people I could help and those I could not,the missed times with my family,friends I have lost in the line of duty.I have seen others promoted only because of politics.But now as a Deputy Chief of a suburban department I take great pride in being a mentor for young people coming on the job,and swell with pride when they can move up the ranks.No not everyone can get promoted,but that does not mean your assignment is any less important.One of the best things I like about this career is the brother/sisterhood I have gone to many other departments in this country and abroad and have been welcomed with opened arms.not many people can say that.What I am trying to say is to look into yourself and really ask yourself if this job is for you.If not its not the end of the world.You have a long time left and its a long time to be unhappy.Thanks for letting me speak my peace.Stay safe to all!

Best of luck to everyone. As someone who made it in the last class on SCORE, it can be done. I had no phone call, no study groups, no berstein, nothing. Just went over and over the orders till I could practically recite them word for word. After all that, it still took me almost 7 years to get promoted. But I did it and you can too. For all those that truly gave it your best effort, you should be proud of yourselves for thinking enough of yourself to work your ass off to better your situation in life. I hope it pays off!

Most of us didn't take the sergeant's test to become sergeants. We took it to become lieutenants, but first there's that inconvenient sergeant thing in-between that we have to get past.

Good for you and your integrity... Don't forget this is only a job not life. If I get a merit spot I'm doing it for two reasons.. More money for my family so they can have better things and more money for retirement for me and my wife to enjoy.. Sure, I could work tons of VRI and court to equal a sgt pay but that's less time with my family which is out of the question.. Get a life and think of your family and future first and not this Job. If your so worried about this job that you wouldn't help your family and to provide better for them because you hate the merit system at work then you need to get a life... Play the game and make it to the end. The object of the game is to WIN! Not lose and be miserable in a beat car because you have morals at work. This job is nothing, family is everything. I guess I'm dumb, cause I'm not lying. And no, don't do much court or any VRI so I've got the family time, thanks. Also don't see how driving 25 miles one way to some south side district if I got made would give me any more time with my family, either. But I guess if I made it by merit, I'd get the district I wanted, too, so that wouldn't be a problem. And believe me, after 20+ years, I understand this is a JOB, not a life.
