CAPS is Good For Something
- A supervisor accidentally fired his gun in the Central District police station in the South Loop, hitting a water pipe and causing it to leak for two hours while police waited on city engineers.
The discharge happened about 9:40 p.m., according to police. After the gun went off, police noticed a trickle of water coming from the first-floor ceiling before it turned into a gushing stream.
The ensuing downpour ruined computers and desks. A damage estimate wasn't immediately available.
Police said the sergeant whose weapon discharged will likely face discipline within the department. No one was injured. The accident happened in the district's Chicago Alternative Policing, or CAPS, office.
Police used CAPS literature to try and soak up water.
Hit a water pipe, ruin a few thousand dollars worth of equipment, get a few days off.

good thing the Commander was not inside the Commander's Suite because the angle of projectory could have possibly put a round through his chair and striking the Commander, nice try though!

And dopes like Dart are worried about civilians carrying guns?
Better train those who "claim" to be professionals (including Dart) so we can reduce the number of "desk pops" in Cook County.
Next case.
opps, oh well fix the pipe and who fucken cares bout caps....useless office. oh good shooting serg....lol
And who said CAPS literature was good for nothing?
Honestly one of the nicest individuals with chevrons this department has. Cut the kid a break. Word is he was just checking out a POs weapon when it accidently went off. Shit happens and the only thing on those CAP's computers worth anything was Flappy Bird!

HARARE, Zimbabwe – A Zimbabwean immigration official says former U.S. Rep. Melvin Jay Reynolds has been arrested in the African country.
The official, Ario Mabika, told The Associated Press Tuesday that Reynolds is being investigated.
The state-controlled The Herald newspaper reported Tuesday that Reynolds was arrested for allegedly possessing pornographic material and violating immigration laws.
Reynolds, an Illinois Democrat, resigned from his congressional seat in 1995 after he was convicted of 12 counts of statutory rape, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography.
The Herald said Reynolds was arrested Monday by police detectives and immigration officials at a Harare hotel.
I am mortified.
Someone got their first desk pop.
Well they tell you to leave some water running so the pipes don't freeze!Better living through Glock!
"That's what she said"
Regarding pencil sharpeners... Only rookies use pencils! If you never make a mistake you would only use a pen. Sgt. E.P.
This is always good for a laugh, but seriously people keep your finger off the damn trigger. One of these times it's not going to be a pipe, pencil sharpner locker, etc etc etc. It is pretty sad when we get shot at more often by our co-workers then by dude.
He should say he was aiming for a street light because that's how they do it in New York.
I'll lay 100-1 odds that the good sergeant was a merit promotion. General stupidity and the lack of common sense are prerequisites of those merited up the food chain on this job.
And other than kindling, it's nice to see that otherwise worthless CAPs literature might actually have a use.
Please stay on top of this one, SCC. Anytime the phrase "will likely face discipline" appears, it usually means absolutley nothing will happen. I want to know what happens to Sergeant Deskpop because any unclouted blue shirt would be damn near crucified over something like this.
Hey 001 District folks, keep us in the loop, would ya?
At least this supervisor was a stand up guy and took the hit. The jellyfish in Mass Transit tried to get everyone else to hold the bag.
A colossal fug up. A recruit would have been fired. If he is working central, he has mega clout and will get a written reprimand.
I guess Barney won't be getting another bullet any time soon.
Two points 1) If McJersey intentionally shoots at street lights, accidentally shooting a water pipe shouldn't be any issue whatsoever. 2.) Presumably, prisoners were moved to protect them from their civil rights being violated in that they were detained in a facility with no running water, in the event they're thirsty or need to flush the toilet. The officers assigned to the desk should also be moved in case they too get thirsty or need to flush the toilet. Officers also have civil rights.

Don't worry, it was just an "office pop" ala The Other Guys.
Sorry for the immediate OT post, but I wanted to share this news on former IL Senator Mel Reynolds: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2561989/Former-US-congressman-arrested-Zimbabwe.html
Another merit sergeant.
Office pop, cmon we all have done it. CAPS ritual.
Ha Will Ferrel and Marky Mark at it again!!! Everyone has done a desk pop before.
Perhaps they'll have the range guys install those "New York" twenty pound triggers on the Glocks carried by dept. members.
Wonder who dimed out the sgt there? Wonder if it was the guy running for top fop vp post that is good at getting cr numbers on coppers?
Jane: i've heard police work is dangerous .
Frank: It is. That's why I carry a big gun.

Frank: I just think about baseball.
Ralph Schauf Dean Angelo's brother in law and FOP Sgt.of Arms candidate works for Ald. Ed Burke as an investigator.
yes it is... NOTHING!
When's the last time you had a desk pop?
I am sure the offending pistol was an unloaded gun. Most importantly, there are very very few accidental discharges. 99% are negligent discharges, which I imagine this was.
It must be merit promotion time.
Cooter was their. And the Sgt. Is a great guy. It could happen to anyone.
At least they found a good use for CAPS literature.
Well ,this embarassment has gone nation-wide. I just saw the article posted on PoliceOne.
Yeah, whatever happened to the Sgt. in the Mass Transit Unit? He fired his gun in the office and nothing happened to him. Ah the Chicago Way. Some are more equal than others.
When is the next Sgt class from the old list?
Mel Reynold just got arrested in Zimbabwe. What a gem he is!
The guy who it happened to is the coolest Sgt. in the District. He's good to everyone. Too bad. He probably feels like a douche, but Sgt. M is no douche. Shit happens.
"We honor the flag, and you crap on it when you don't shoot your gun in the office!"
A real-life desk pop!
"GUYS....i just did my first OFFICE POP.."
At least it wasn't some poor streetlights?
Glad the P.O.'s from the 011 Dist chase/shooting are OK. The video from the helicopter showing the squad car with most of the paint missing had no sound but speaks VOLUMES about what Rahm thinks of us. I'd love to see a news expose on the unsafe veh's we are forced to work in.
OT: After reading the Sun Times, if the detectives and supervisors didn't cover something up in the Vanecko case, they sure in the hell were trying to. Doesn't look good at all.
Remember a supervisor discharging his weapon in 010 years ago. Narrowly missed a civilian sitting on a bench in the lobby. It happened behind closed doors in the Watch Commander's office, but the noise and the hole in the wall told the "HOLE" story.
Discipline my Ass!!!!! The Sgt. will be taken care of as always. This dumb ass department only seeks to punish patrolman to set examples. It's all about supervisors and protecting them.
Wow I was shocked until I heard caps sgt in 001 it was probably due to a lack of excitment in his professional career. The caps literature being used to soak up the water just made my day

-There was a guy nick named cooter who was with him when it happened.

Never, ever, hand over a loaded gun!!
The Lt in mass transit just laughed when his Sgt fired his gun in the office. The Lt put bullet hole stickers around the office big joke.

If it didn't hit the pipe, nothing would have been said. Period!
At FOP meeting tonight, it was announced Rich Agular has been brought up on charges for using FOP server for political gain. Looked like Spider from Goodfellas up there trying to explain himself.
I bet the Sgt.'s punishment for discharging his weapon in the station will probably cost him more than Vanecko's jail time fine for manslaughter
"OT: After reading the Slum Times, if the detectives and supervisors didn't cover something up in the Vanecko case, they sure in the hell were trying to. Doesn't look good at all."
Only a civilian, or a hairgel reporter would say something so lame.
We, the police, have the inside media scoop on this and it seems that Novak et al. were very upset with the massive FOIA bullshit and the delays that the cops put them through, and that's the reason for the media hoopla and hubbub; that's what drove this exaggerated and fantastical story.
Anyone with some critical reading skills can read through suppositions and assumptions.
Yeah let's downplay what happened because the guy is nice and let's u duck early. Get real. One of us could have been killed or seriously injured due to this idiot. Mistakes happen. But this is much more serious than a mistake. This guy should be retreaded through the firearms program and give n suspension time.
Something just isn't right here.
2/18/2014 12:48:00 PM
Sounds like your story that isn't right.
OT: Went to FOP meeting tonight for the drama. Mark Donahue was not their so Sid, Frankie, Richie and little Billy were meek as sheep tonight.
In fact most of their ticket for trustee were not present either? The rumors that they are disenchanted with the top of their ticket may be growing legs very low turnout. They feel the top of the ticket is not helping any of them get elected and when they out they spend all of their time defending the top of the citywide ticket. No flash mobs either.
Fireworks started when the general membership wanted to know what is going to be done with Rich Aguliar for using the FOP email list to send out campaign material for the citywide group and not making that list available to the other candidates. Where it got tense was when members who are not running for anything were pissed that privileged info was used by Aguliar. It came out the Aguliar has been served with papers for using FOP material for personal gain and he said he would not comment on it until he has his day in court.
What was very interesting was when Dougherty said he was concerned that the election committee sent the ballots out about 3 hours late because they wanted to see if Shields was successful in his law suit which would have forced the lodge to print new ballots. By waiting the election committee saved the lodge over 20k in printing and postage costs both ways. Apparently when you make 160K from the members plus 600 a month just to show up what’s another 20k of our money?
The meeting ended with Aguliar looking like he ran a 26.2 mile race but the above events only took about 15 minutes. Aguliar put in his retirement papers for 15 April 2014. I think it’s time to retire him 6 weeks earlier!

Well dumbass, since we didn't identify the sergeant by name or position, maybe the shooting never happened? Just like that other one?
If you read the title and the last line of the quoted article, we're making fun of the fact that they used CAPS literature to soak up the water.
Maybe this will make it easier for your tiny fucking brain to see what we were talking about - "CAPS is good for something - they supply fibrous material with which to soak up water dripping from the ceiling after a supervisor of undetermined assignment lit up a water pipe with a negligent discharge!"

I also was told that Barnett clearly is helping Mike Shields and that he works for the Shields boys.
When you've got nothing go on the offensive. The Angelo/Shields ticket is grasping at anything to get elected.
If Fernando Flores is an example of their platform, God help us all. Sure, allegations were made against Aguilar, but there hasn't been any investigation done. There are plenty of all ranks that get taken care of,if you don't like it go start your own business and let's see how easy it is to make 6 figures.
This job is full of whiny bitches, dam I guess including me, thx
Nothing is going to happen, only if he was a blue shirt then he would see some suspension time, like he should. The department doesn't reprimand their white shirts. They can rob like the ERPs Lt that there was even video of him stealing and was allowed to retire without incident, lie in shootings like the female sgt from 009 that is still on the job that drove her gang member lover from a shooting and there was plenty of witnesses that saw her and what she was doing, but is still on the job. The things our department lets go.
CFS. Conventional firing system. I.E. Double/single action semi-automatics do have a de-cocking lever, which allows you to safely lower the hammer after firing. It can be left in the safe mode.
AD's happen. That is due to lack of training. If shooting 30 rounds at a paper target is the only training you get in a year, then you get no training. You must practice proper weapon safety or AD's will happen.
I've seen two in my career that killed people. Both with SA mod 1911's. No training leads the gun to go BOOM when you don't want it to go BOOM.
The rest may be scrimped on but weapons cannot. You train or you are dangerous.
Cooter was their. And the Sgt. Is a great guy. It could happen to anyone.
2/18/2014 01:11:00 PM
No it can't, follow the most BASIC rules of gun safety. This is exactly how 1-3 cops are killed by other cops every year in this country during horseplay or traing, neglecting the MOST BASIC rules. Take responsibility and put the "I'm a gun expert bullshit" in the bag, this is dangerous and embarrassing for us when the public reads this nonsense. Seriously....

Admit it. Sgt Merit prick or #1 on list Fucked up BIG Time. Instead of a water pipe he could have shot another OFFICER with his stupidy! Good guy? Swell but a major fuck up. Needs to take time and a transfer out of 001. Yes accidents do happen but we are trained. And accidents with firearms can be fatal. Just see headlines now-OFFICER KILLED BY FRIENDLY FIRE. OMG. Sport wasn't thinkin.
I'm sorry...but "Shit Happens?"
Semi Auto with a Safety that should be ON.
I don't care who the Sgt is...No one touches my weapon while it is loaded But ME.
Sgt wants to check my weapon? Sure...let me drop the mag and clear the chamber FIRST!
Absolute Zero chance of 'accidental discharge" with my weapon. 28 years of Owning weapons, and they don't go off by accident.
Since you may or may not be a copper, I'll let you in on a secret. The only time our safeties are on is if it's a single action pistol. The 1911's or Hi-Power's, both of which we could carry at one time. The safeties on the double action pistols were always kept off and were only used to de-cock the pistol. That's the difference between owning guns and carrying guns. Thankfully, the Sgt involved followed the rule of pointing the weapon in a safe direction.
Nice job posting the pics, real brotherhood.
I hope its not PO's saying their guns dont have safeties. All of your guns have safeties.
-=-=
CFS. Conventional firing system. I.E. Double/single action semi-automatics do have a de-cocking lever, which allows you to safely lower the hammer after firing. It can be left in the safe mode.
=-=-=
Obviously, you aren't a chicago cop. we haven't had Double/Singles (CFS) since the early 1990's and none of guns in the intervening time frame were built with safeties, aside from the "finger off the trigger" or a Smith not firing without a magazine. Berettas all fire with one in the pipe, no magazine present, no safety on the weapon.
To another unpublished:
The media had this story long before we did - see the embedded link in the post.
Don't blame the blog, it kind of makes you look like an out-of-touch moron.
If you weren't there you shouldn't comment. If you met the sgt you would eat your words. He was NOT merit. He is a great boss to work for and imo one of the best I've met on this job. We needed new pipes anyway since our sewer system has had back up issues for over a year. Hope you never make a mistake and a bunch of people judge you!
It might be time to bring Billy boy up on charges. That would make 3 of the Shitty Wide mopes under charges. Billy has committed a number of acts, which violate the by- laws.
Guns don't go off by themselves. Stupid people that don't pay attention are the ones that are irresponsible with their weapons. Pay attention to your weapon. And why was he even handling his weapon off the holster in a caps office? Doesn't tact have their own office? or he just so bored to be playing john wayne?
Here is a good safety, it's called take your booger hook off the bang switch. Sadly just like everything else, coppers get complacent because we handle at least one gun everyday.
Complacency kills brothers and sisters. Please take the time to practice with your weapon on your time and (I know god forbid) your own money. It's YOUR life or YOUR PARTNER'S life that might rely on it. Don't give me that "The department needs to ____" BS. We can complain or we can do something about it (and then complain).
10:31 am - who the fuck is this idiot who keeps saying all of our semi-autos have safeties? This moron obviously isn't the police and should stay the fuck off this site!
2/19/2014 01:04:00 PM
Ok know it all..read the quote..he said the safety should be on....meaning/inferring there is a manual safety. The "safeties" on you Glock (fanboy) are not a manual safety. A manual safety would be a lever or a button that has to be manipulated, such as the "Safety Lever" on the AR-15 platform, such as the 870 has the "safety mechanism" behind the trigger. Reading and comprehension is a skill, now go add more gel to your stupid mohawk.

Followed the rule?
Are you fucking stupid? Well, that's rather obvious.
How about I let you in on a little secret:
How about "Treat ALL weapons as if they are loaded"? Ever hear of that one you jack ass?
How about keepin' your fucking finger off the trigger? Guess that one escapes you too.
Need we go on with some of the other BASIC rules of gun safety?
If he wasn't fucking around, this wouldn't have EVER happened.
I know the Sgt, and YES he is a nice guy, never hurt anyone and on, and on and on. HE FUCKED UP.
Yet, you make excuses for this type of behavior? And YOU are the police? With a LOADED WEAPON?
Now here's where I want you to explain how a safety de-cocks a double action? John Browning would cock-slap you in the face for being that stupid. Go back in the basement and tend to your fully loaded Old Style.
The Aguillar, Dougherty and Bailey ticket will be playing at Johnnys ice house west sat at 1830 hrs. Not a bad time to show your support (or lack of).
As a matter of fact I am retired, started out with a revolver, carried a Model 39-2 until we couldn't anymore. Went to 92-D. Trained guys who still carried CFS as late as December 2012. Also carried Glock.
All I was saying was that certain weapons like the Beretta 92-f or fs have a safety that also functions as a decocting lever.
Someone posted that picture on the web?! Wtf is wrong with you guys? From what I hear this Sgt. Is a good guy! An all around good guy, and one of you assholes that work for this guy just fucked him over like that? Whoever took that photo should have his ass beat and whoever posted that to the web should have his ass beat daily! We treat each other like shit. That picture will haunt this poor guy forever. Someone will post that to his kids Facebook page someday I guarantee it. Nice job asshole..way to keep embarrassing shit in house. Hope someday karma pays you back for the ignorant shit you just did. Btw don't work in 001 or even know the guy...just think it sucks.
The idiot should take 20 days, minimum.

Honestly one of the nicest individuals with chevrons this department has. Cut the kid a break. Word is he was just checking out a POs weapon when it accidently went off. Shit happens and the only thing on those CAP's computers worth anything was Flappy Bird!
2/18/2014 08:39:00 AM
Guns don't "accidentally went off".
If you think it's ok to have a negligent discharge, you're as much a goof as he is.
To the idiot who gave their load gun to the sergeant and to the sergeant who took the loaded gun. I hope both of them don't bring that kind of idiocy in other areas of district where someone could get hurt! Or on the street for that matter! They both deserve to be reprimanded fairly.

Ralph Schauf Dean Angelo's brother in law and FOP Sgt.of Arms candidate works for Ald. Ed Burke as an investigator.

And Dougherty's wife works at the credit union. Oh, the scandal! ShittyWide and Not so Clean Slate are really grasping for straws, aren't they?
Lt. TB shot the floor in the CAPS office of the old 009.
2/19/2014 01:04:00 AM
I was there and CAPS didn't exist back then.
It was a SA 9mm and the sear spring failed. Good thing he was loading it the right way and the only thing that got a hole in it was the floor. A true accidental discharge.
What you have here is an unintentional discharge. It happened because the Sgt pulled the trigger. If he handled the way he was supposed to it can't go off, unlike the old single action autos.
That said, TB is a loon but never seen him handle a weapon wrong. Boy knows more about firearms than anybody I ever met. Can give you a physics disertation on how they work. Also a stand up guy.
