Killing the Taste Slowly

Honestly, just put a bullet in this thing. It was dying before and the packs of roving "wilding" yutes have made it a less-than-desirable destination for a few years now:
  • Former Mayor Richard M. Daley once declared that Taste of Chicago would “always be free.” Under Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago’s premier lakefront festival is getting a little less free every year.

On Tuesday, Emanuel defended his latest plan to ring a profit out of what once was a money-losing Taste — by raising the surcharge on food tickets, doubling to $50 the cost of “premium seats” for concerts at the Petrillo Music Shell and selling 3,000 “general admission lawn seats” that used to be free.

“If you’re going to the concert, you can still see the concerts free. If you want seating, that’s a different thing,” the mayor said.
And of course, Rahm was (and continues) to point out the Taste made money last year:
  • Taste of Chicago turned a $272,000 profit in 2013 for the first time in six years — thanks to a recipe that included perfect weather and a popular music lineup. It was a $1.6 million turn-around in just one year.
Sure - an all cash business, no real accounting, hundreds of thousands changing hands over a week or two. We're sure it just happened to start making money in half the number of days after a six year decline. And crime was down in the city if  you don't count that pesky 2012, reclassify burglaries as thefts and call dead bodies "death investigations" and just ignore the rise in arson.

Once again, look 90 miles north to Milwaukee and Summerfest. Fence the whole thing, charge admission, and keep the garbage out.

The asshole raises prices on that yearly debacle? How about the savages? Do they still get free tickets from the alderman's office, paid for by taxpayers?

No thanks, not last year, not this century, not ever. I go to Milwaukee, if at all.

Why anyone would go there is beyond me. Not a place to take your family, unless you want them to be exposed to the savages.

I can honestly say I've never been to the Taste. Traffic to get there, parking. And for what? To roam around and worry about pick pockets and scumbags?

To get some food that is arguably cooked under less than ideal sanitation conditions? You know you never want to eat it in the AM when they first fire up the grills, and definitely never at night when they're running low, grills are getting cold, and food's been out all day... So that leaves what? Lunch? No thanks.

Last time I worked taste there was a Lt that spotted a M/1 kid walking around the fountain with the barrel of a sawed off shotgun sticking out of his backpack. After a short foot chase he was caught. Best part was that he said he was from Wisconsin and the reason he was carrying the gun was because he needed it to protect himself from chicago shitheads! Then that same day another M/1 was caught with a loaded 9mm hanging on a string next to his balls. Yes people, by all means bring your family to the taste and experience our diversified culture.

Went once many years ago. Over priced and poor quality food then and I can only imagine what a disaster it is now. Never been and probably never will go to the Milwaukee festival but it seems that that is the real ticket.

hahaha magic accounting.

sure it turned a profit...and the profit doesn't even come close to paying for all the overtime.

at the superbowl halftime show they can set-up and tear down that stage, lighting, and everything else that goes with it in about 20 minutes. in chicago, better start the street closures now, today, so the city can be ready. setting up those tents be hard...really hard. lmao

suicides...homicides...you decides.

investment banker number four bites the dust.

[clip]

Another JPMorgan Banker Dies, 37 Year Old Executive Director Of Program Trading

Ordinarily we would ignore the news of another banker's death - after all these sad events happen all the time - if it wasn't for several contextual aspects of this most recent passage. First, the death in question, as reported by the Stamford Daily Voice is that of Ryan Henry Crane, a Harvard graduate, who is survived by his wife, son and parents at the very young age of 37. Second, Ryan Henry Crane was formerly employed by JPMorgan - a bank which was featured prominently in the news as recently as two weeks ago when another of its London-based employees committed suicide by jumping from the top floor of its Canary Wharf building. Third: Crane was an Executive Director in JPM's Global Program Trading desk, founded in 1999 by an ex-DE Shaw'er, a function of the firm which is instrumental to preserving JPM's impeccable and (so far in 2013) flawless trading record of zero trading losses....

'...The circumstances surrounding his death are scarce, but what is most notable is that not only is Crane the second very young JPMorgan banker to pass in recent days, but is also the fourth banker death in under a month. We can only hope this disturbing chain of deaths within the financial industry - one of which involved a nail-gun induced suicide - is purely accidental.

h/t SGT Report.'

272,000 dollars profit eh..

in a couple hundred years that just may pay for the maggie daley park bullshit..

how many feet of bike path or river walk can you buy 'with all that money'

one gun shot victim to the er wipes that profit right out..yeah /

can 272,000 dollars buy us even one more cop on the beat...just one [consider benefits and equipment]

we ask how the cities profit of a mere 272,000 dollars compares to the corporate profits and the resulting campaign donations to clouted politicians from this event compare

I might be naive, but it seems like if you raise prices for this event, only the people who have money will be able to attend - legally. The thugs will still roam free and have a lot better prospects from whom to appropriate smartphones, jewelry, etc. I'm guessing that college professors and North Side elites are a lot better targets than, say, a group of longshoremen.

Many years ago, the city of Indianapolis had to move their zoo out of the 'hood because the animals in cages were in danger from the animals outside. 'Nuff said.

In the summer downtown becomes less and less inviting. Just look at what has happened to our downtown in the last ten years. In the past ten years, every single year robberies in the downtown (1st and 18th districts)area have increased year over year.

If he could, he would throw the meter people out of the city, he has tried.

Sad. Over the last 25 years under King Daley and now Rahm they really shown their hate for first responders. It's interesting though that the people that usually hate the police are crooks in some form themselves.

I wouldn't contribute 1 cent to this fiasco knowing the amount of vermin out wildin' across Michigan Avenue/Chicago & State. Will the increase for ticket fees help these yutes or help to put more cpd on the streets? Doubt it.

That is how Prez Tony Prickwinkie wants it. The jail would be closed if she (it?) had her way. After all, the popoulation of the Cook County Jail does not reflect the population of Cook County as a whole and that is proof positive the system is racist. Or so thinks Prez Prickwinkele.

Never went to ChicagoFest, never been to its evil spawn, The Taste of Chicago.

Something tells me I've never missed anything. Although I do admit to getting a chuckle out of watching people eat BBQ turkey legs in 90 degree heat.

I'm always assured of at least one photographer getting a picture of some fat slug with BBQ sauce all over his face.
