Parking Tickets Up

Evidently, the numbers of Parking Tickets being written by the CPD is up (via TheExpiredMeter.com):
  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel touted the reassignment of hundreds of police officers to the streets as a better way to fight crime.

And while crime did drop last year, the redeployment of officers from desk jobs to beat duty has had another possible outcome: more parking tickets.

[...] Police spokesman [...] insisted police brass did not order officers to write up more parking scofflaws.
They certainly didn't - that would be trouble on various levels. However, the carrot-and-stick approach seems to work. If you want a shot at working Violence Reduction Initiatives (VRI), then you better come in with activity, to wit Parkers, Movers, Curfew, School Absentees, Arrests, ANOV's. No numbers, no shot at your portion of $100 million in overtime.

And this is a good thing. More tickets = more revenue for the City. And, minor crimes are being fought. The NYPD's broken window theory alive and well in Chicago.

It had nothing to do with desk people on the street. Let's see, they were so thrilled about going to a district they picked up their activity, hahaha

amusing that they tout the number of parking tickets up.

but what if they are written for city employees vehicles like for example cta employees and therefore are never paid...ya know like the red light cam tickets and the speed trap cam tickers to save the children.

the propaganda goes out about how many tickets were written as a metric of success... but we ask how many are actually paid.

rahm talks a tuff game on these guys but has done little about it.

why..well we guess the inflated numbers are used as a tool

The VRI point is valid, but the majority of the increase is due to the PPO foot posts. In less than a year some of these kids have racked up 700 parkers each. Don't believe me? Ask any of the PPO foot posts about parkers. It's all they really can do to pass the time.

They raised the fines again on the parkers. I am a bit of a parking nazi of sorts and the fines are beginning to embarrass me because they're too damn expensive. These greedy bastards are going to make those tickets so expensive most of us won't write them and those of us that do will risk an injury fighting off pissed off motorists.

I would venture that the majority of those parking tickets were not written by desk jockeys re-assigned to the street.

I would bet they were written by officers working VRI, assigned to a two-block area to circle all night, who just got bored and started to ticket every infraction they saw.

It is simple!

Tickets are up because of the dreaded Quota system!

You want extra money in your pocket, this is what the city wants and thieving politicians want! Its for the children!

5 Parking Tickets, 5 Movers, 5 ANOVs a month to qualify!

That is why people in this city are getting sandbagged with pimpy tickets!

Is this what passes for "news reporting"- that the media basically repeats what it is said by someone in power or a news release? If the news "reporter" would dig deeper they would find indeed officers have not been shuffled from desk duties to the streets. That the truth of the matter is that certain units were disbanded (those officers were already on the streets) and then those very same officers were assigned to marked patrol units. So nothing changed and no the department by magic didn't find all of this hidden manpower. That my friends is a complete lie.

A few years ago I got a parking ticket in the mail. The only problem was I didn't live in Chicago at the time, and had never in my life been to the location where I got the ticket.

I called the number on the ticket, and the woman on the phone told me that it wasn't a typo or a meter maid, but that a police officer had written the ticket, so it was even more likely to be valid. She said there were no typos or smudges and it was very, very clearly written.

I appealed it by including a letter from my company that stated I was at work, in a completely different part of the state during the time this cop wrote my car a ticket.

It wasn't transposed digits since the make and model and color and stuff were all correct.

Could this have been a crooked cop flipping through a database and writing tickets for some reason? They dismissed the ticket but I never heard another word back. Pretty strange to write a parking ticket to a car that had never been on that street. Anyone hear of this before?

Not a car in Chicago would be safe from a parking violation, as there are so many rules/laws on the books that probably 90 percent (high/low guess?) have something wrong with them.

More tickets, such BS. The Tribune reported that the City of Chicago is going to spend up to $320 million dollars on its next dubious project, Obama's gift to Chicago, a manufacturing hub on Goose Island. Let's see, $320 million + $55 million for Maggie Daley park +$70 million for DePaul Arena = around $445 million. The little prick is crying poor that he can't make a $600 million pension payment next year. Do the math, $445/$600 = 74%. In these three project's alone, he has pissed away 74% of what could possibly be used to finance pensions. What's up next? Millions more for Obama's presidential library. Were fucked if this keeps up.

Regular rotation was midnights to 3rd watch to 2nd watch. Only the real problem children had DOG changes every period. Others might have had DOG changes before their weekends off came up. I recall one old fuck with a police shirt he had worn his entire career opening his desk drawer when I asked for a locker. No fucking way I was going to pay for a fucking locker. I worked out of the trunk of my car, old station at Wood St. Somehow we managed to do our job without all this whining crap. The police were good then. I'd go to a call and see other cars slide by to make sure I was all right. People remembered what job others were on or else they wrote everything down. No computer to look up everything. We used something called memory. If you called for backup you got several cars flying in with blue lights. Pretty good times all in all.

In typical CPD fashion, they already did that. They had civilian Police Aides working the desk to free up coppers. After the initial shake up most districts ended up with people who would work and who learned the job. We had a good one in 019 on 3rd Watch. She knew the desk and booking/bonding better than any desk sergeant.

Then some idiot decided to eliminate that position to save money. After 10 years the City shitcanned her and they had to once again pull in a PO from outside. This City sucks. I've seen shit like that many times. Very inefficient and makes no sense. They had a group of civilians who knew a job and did that job and who were paid less than PO's. Then they fired them all. No sense. They let them bid for jobs elsewhere in the city but they took a pay cut.

In area districts that are basically a nightmare while working the desk, the walk-ins are comparable to just like getting your patrol calls inside instead of responding to them outside, therefore, civilians are not suited to deal w/walk in complainants. Sure, they can handle some duties, but found they got in the way more than anything when we had them @ our desk. It takes about 5 years for a sworn officer to be comfortable with what your dealing with when you're answering calls, so how can a civilian really know how to respond to requests/complaints when they have not been out there answering calls. At our desk, sometimes it's just like being out there in the street! P/O's in uniform w/time on the job command the presence & experience that's needed even at a front desk that's erroneously viewed by too many that it's just an office job.
