Off-Duty Shoots Gunman

  • Charges are pending against two people after an off-duty officer shot and wounded one of them outside a Northwest Side restaurant in the Hermosa neighborhood Saturday night.

The shooting happened about 9 p.m. in the 4300 block of West Fullerton Avenue, authorities said.

The off-duty officer was at a restaurant with his family in the same block and saw two males inside “causing a disturbance,” Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said.

The officer announced he was a policeman and escorted the males out of the restaurant, according to a statement from the Chicago Police Department. Police said one of the males went to his vehicle, got a handgun and pointed it at the officer. Camden said the two were waiting outside the restaurant for the officer, one armed with a knife, the other with a gun.
They knew he was a cop, had to know he was probably armed, and still went and got their own knife and gun to confront him when he's with his family. Be careful out there boys and girls - on and off duty.

Good job Officer.

Great job! It would have been easier to dial 911 but you showed character and handled the business.

Never a good idea to get involved with the local trash when you're off duty and out with your family, unless it directly affects you and yours. That officer is damn lucky it turned out well; these wannabe ambushers were amateurs.

While he was within his right as an officer and citizen, better judgement could have been used. This very easily could've gone badly. At least call it in and wait before you get involved. Protect yourself and family first.

Thank God everything turned out fine, but a leassonfor future encounters, unless immediate action is required that is life threatening, best to call 911 because a disturbance is easily handled without your family nearby, word of cation here not criticism, once in full uniform and got out of a marked squad car and me and my partner broke up a fight in a park, the defense in court was we thought these two Guys were gang bangers!

Why would you do that with your family there? The badge doesn't make you bulletproof pal and you should really think twice about who you show your badge to. I'm glad it worked out in your favor but it could've been ugly. Take your family to a nice restaurant from now on preferably way outside of this city.

The gang bangers came in to the restaurant. They started talking shit to each other. The off duty police officer then announced his office and told them to leave. Outside the restaurant they pulled a knife on each other. The off duty officer then told them to disperse. The refused to disperse. One of the gangbangers went to his car and retrieved a gun. The off duty officer shot off three rounds. He hit one of them on the leg. The rats/gang bagers took off in their vehicle. The off duty officer called 911 with a flash and later on they were stopped and apprehended.

Good job officer. I wasn't there. Perhaps there were other facts such as they maybe threatened you. I support you and your actions 100%. You did what you had to do. I am glad you are ok. To those Monday morning quarterbacks and second guessers; gfy. So what if he was with his family?

you just did criticize him. we cant win, even with our own. how about maybe the guy wanted to eat there. What the fuck is it to you? Maybe he felt that his family needed protecting. Maybe he lives over there because he grew up there. Maybe he was on his way hoome after visiting family. Again, what the fuck is it to you.

He got involved because he felt at the time that taking action was warranted. That's called being the police. Read the side of the car. PROTECTING. Weis runs away, he gets rightfully ripped. That female PO gets caught on video bailing on the arrest at walmart or where ever, she gets correctly excoriated. This guy takes action, and he gets second guessed all over the place. He kept going on he was going to, "FUXX HIM IN THE A$$!!"

He kept repeating that over and over until I turned around and said, "HEY! We got kids around here."

He looked around the dinning room and shut up. My daughter and I quietly left and as we did I had my right hand on revolver in my pocket.

Glad all worked out for you officer, and I hope that the reporting officers were smart enough to use your station address for your family members in the reports.

Good job, officer! Glad you and yours are OK. You did the right thing; no need for any of us to second guess you. As for the naysayers, saying not to get involved, call 9-1-1, etc., Calling 9-1-1 only ensures that the shitheads will get away with whatever they're doing. By the time the on-duty troops arrive, it will be all over, and you'll get second guessed for not taking action yourself, by the same ones who bitched that you shouldn't get involved! So you did it right- our thanks to you!

I agree. Putting your family in danger under any circumstances is unwarranted. It was not a situation where he had to take immediate action. Go to the bathroom and call 911 if you must. As police officers we expect some level of danger but not or family. Family first this bogus title of ours last. City will not back you. Frank Pape and Sylvester Washington (two gun Pete) are relics of a time that doesn't exist anymore. People didn't challenge what you do and how you acted, or reacted, as a policeman back then. Today, both of those men would have either been fired or jailed, or likely both.

Everyone that would have sat there with their head down staring at their food pretending not to notice wouldn't have done a fucking thing, not because their family was there, but because they're fucking cowards without that uniform on.

Thank you for being the police and protecting.
Also, I agree with whoever said, who cares where the fuck he eats. The whole city sucks. Jag off infest everywhere.

I've noticed on here that when a cop does something good there is like 40 posts; half of which are telling him what he did wrong and what they would have done differently. If he fucks up there is like 250 posts.

Thanks for over exaggerating. No one said you had to live in 016. I don't. But given the situation it seems as though it wasn't worth the puffy chest and the macho shoulders. You live in 025. Statistically you and your family are in more danger than those who live in 008,016 and 022. Just going by the numbers. You like it? Enjoy it! No need to apologize for growing up "in da hood" just try to better yourself. This isn't about race as you have mentioned. It's about making the right decision at the right time. 3 on 1? Never good. Even you should be able to do that math. Showing badge to idiots talking smack? Overly authoritative. Following them outside? Bad move. All this in front of the family? WRONG!

Don't compare the off duty walking into robbery in 016 to this almost disaster. One why are you taking your family into ghetto to eat? Two why would one get involved with two shitbirds about to fight each other while off duty? Call 911 or leave. Think anyone cares? Enjoy your honorable in same envelope with your visit to corp council.

P.S. to "...Glad all worked out for you officer, and I hope that the reporting officers were smart enough to use your station address for your family members in the reports.

Home phone numbers, cell phone accounts, car registrations, anything and everything gets registered to the Post Office Box. If these gang bangers get hold of the reports through their lawyers or whatever let them throw a brick through the Post Office window,
