Nanny State Expands

  • In Illinois it’s called everything from pop to soda to sodi, but the state’s Democrats are now calling soda pop a money maker.

State Sen. Mattie Hunter, D-Chicago, on Wednesday laid out a plan to add a penny-per-ounce tax to soda along with a handful of other sugary drinks.

Why? Kids (and adults) are getting chubby, and it costs a lot to treat people who get sick from weighing too much, according to Hunter.
Evidently, no one learned anything from Chicago's bottled-water-tax.

New York is even crazier:
  • New York state Sen. Ruben Diaz Jr. introduced a bill that would require parents of elementary school children to attend a minimum of four parent support classes. If parents don't go, 6th graders won't move onto 7th grade.

Leslie Venokur, the co-founder of Big City Moms, called the idea "crazy" and "insane." She said that what is most concerning that the education commissioner and Board of Regents would develop the parenting guidelines. She said the Regents should "stick to what they're good at which is teaching kids and staying away from the parents."
Of course, New York elected an openly communist mayor, so you can't say it wasn't unexpected.

Parents being made to go to parenting classes without being ordered to after some criminal charges sounds like "re education camps" that were run by the Commies and the Nazis.

Yep, that'll mean an additional 12cents a can, on TOP of the regular sales tax.
But it's to keep 'the children' from getting chubby? B.S. It's to line the State coffers, so more money can be frittered away on newer, bigger, shinier 'programs' to buy the love of those big campaign contributors.

Good incentive to buy one of those fizzy soda makers for your home.

Your body belongs to the State and the State has the right to dictate how you take care of that body and what you put in it. The State also needs money to take care of all its subjects so it must raise taxes.

I wish government on all levels would just solve the big problems and leave the everyday little stuff to the citizens. Politicians are way out of control with all their micro managing. Guess we'll have to buy our soda in Indiana when we get our gas and cigs.

Socialists say, "Won't someone please think of the children?"

We must tax water. The British taxed tea and we fought a fucking Revolution, but in Chicago you can tax fucking water. That's how passive these sheeple are.

When will you pussies wake the fuck up?

That new york shit is just bullshit. Bullshit! Bullshit! Bullshit! I understand you want parents aware of whats going on, but you can't require them to do something like that with those type of consequences. My mother didn't attend each and every parent teacher conference/report card pick-up day. If there was a problem, she got a call. If there wasn't a problem, she didn't get a call, simple. Between all that plus quarterly progress reports, parents are still aware of whats going on for the most part. Parents should be aware of course, but not going to a 5 minute conference 4 times a year should not result in failing the student, thats just telling the child hard work doesn't pay off.

I don't know if it's so much a nanny state issue as it is; A) a path to making the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") viable or more likely, simply a new tax.

If this tax is also on diet pop, you'll know the answer...

Just think, if parents don't go to the classes in New York, some students might languish in the 6th grade for years.

If they are not doing so already.

Oh yeah? Just wait until they decriminalize heroin etc They will be falling all over each other to tax that shit at government run drug clinics. They will finally realize how to make a dent in the cartels enormous $$ take, they will become the largest competitor, and they will compete quite well on price. Dude sling dope on the corner will finally no longer have such a huge customer base.

The government will give the masses nice and consistent high strength dope. Taxed of course. Maybe even combined in orange and grape soda. The new and improved Dr Pepper formula H will give you more than a modest wake up.

Why stop at 'soda pop'? There are 80 oz in a 5 pound bag of sugar, the source of the 'problem'. Hey red meat is not good for you so an extra 10 cents per Big Mac. WOW these guys are great looking out for me, Thank you. I think I heard that cigarettes might be bad for you but lets not ban them completely just ADD MORE TAX. This is great if the simpletons downstate work on it we could be debt free in a year or two. Why isn't there a "deposit tax" on all plastic containers? But it has to be small so people don't actually return the plastic? An extra 1 or 2 cents on a gallon of milk because it's in plastic!

It's a good thing heroin, crack, meth and weed are illegal otherwise they would be taxing the shit out of it!

I was thinking why the hell did I have to go to school the Democrats of this State are doing all the thinking for me, they no whats better for me then I do. . . I have to go now because in tearing up, great bunch of guys.

I do all my grocery shopping, gas purchases and other purchases out of the city if I can.

A 12 cents a can or $2.88 for a 24 pack. There is a $1.20 tax on a case of bottled water. That's on top of the sales "high tax" already on food (IL is one of the few states that collects a sales tax on food of any amount"

This shit has to stop, enough is enough.

Too all the politicians that read this blog (esp Ald Mary O'Connor) remember this come election time next year

Fuck these " tax-aholic's ".
At a Best Buy in Highland, INDIANA, I bought a nifty device called Sodastream.
Make your own soda with many choices of flavors available, diet, natural and regular.
Plus you can make carbonated water to mix with your favorite adult spirits, mine is Scotch.
Start up cost is a few dollars, but no cans to toss away, the kids get the flavors they like and most of all, keeping more of my hard earned money from the hands of these tax-aholics is immense.

Funny thing is on average obese/overweight DO NOT use more health insurance. The simple fact is they use less as they tend to die younger of more lethal diseases. Not even including the savings from uncollected pensions/social security.

The group that on average uses the most health insurance dollars in their lifetime are proper weight - nonsmokers. The longer you live the more health insurance dollars you will use in your lifetime.

Everyone dies of something...

SCC you might delete or not publish my comment, but why is some old

o/t

and the bailout money has run out at the automakers. the so-called job creating geniuses.

the corp exec's that didn't already blow town with their million dollar golden parachute plans will have to show us what they are really made of. they spent the last several months touting recoveries and record sales as they channel stuffed vehicles onto dealers lots counting them as sold.

see, the word didn't mean what you thought it did. the automakers count a vehicle as sold when it's ship to the dealer not when a customer actually buys it.

whatdaya think -- another bailout -- if only we can get our hands on all the pension money say the political pimps

meanwhile. in chicago,

the money from groupon the coupon pusher and one of rahm's high tech trophy corporations will run out soon.

the suckers that bought into a stock market hype sad day for you. they sold you a story based on hopes and dreams while stuffing their own pockets with exurbanite wages, bonuses, gifts, trips and trinkets.

in the end you'll hear oh well we tried that and it didn't work.

for those unaware groupons stock was hammered down over 20 percent on friday as they announced earnings and future expectations.

but hey, the corporate media propaganda and the political pimps tell us there's 7.000 trucking jobs 'open right now' in illinois hhahahaha

so maybe the high tech coupon pushers chose the wrong major in school and the mayor can set them up with a community college training ponzi scam that promises a job while separating the marks, the churls from more of their money/

the line for the trucking jobs starts over there behind the unemployed welders and computer programmers that chicago's political apparatus told us there was a shortage of.

no sugary soft drinks for you guys after the mass layoffs.

Oh give me a break with the soda pop nonsense already. If you don't want FAT kids, then stop bussing them to school! In my day - we WALKED - just over a mile in each direction. We walked with a ton of other kids - crossing guards, patrol boys, the whole thing... virtually no problems.

One time some perv came out and tried some shit with a 4th grade girl - ever seen about 70 kids swarm some asshole like ants? Kicking, spitting, grabbing his hair... he fell down, and they stomped the shit out of him... No charges, never saw the guy again...

We also RODE OUR BIKES to/from school - we had bars to lock them up en-masse right outside of the gym teachers office windows so no one ever fucked with anything. The one moron who tried got whalloped by the basketball coach... again - no charges, just no more problems...

But in recent years, the kids get bussed, the bike rails get ripped out, recess is cut and we wonder why kids get fat...

These fatty mcfatso problems are all of the government's making - they interfered with what worked so they could tax us even more...

ENOUGH ALREADY!

AGREED! Very few fat kids back then and no 'diet' soda, to speak of. (Nobody drank Tab because it tasted so awful)

YOu forgot one thing on the list, though. Gym class. We went four days a week. Now, many grades have NO gym class at all. We've got a bunch of sedentary kids who sit on their ever-widening asses all day, in front of computer screens. THen they get driven home and then they sit in front of a screen again, whether it's to do homework or to play Minecraft.
