Chicago Lands a Factory!

Mostly by getting corporations to donate cash for the bid, then playing on Obama's sympathies for hte hometown folks:
  • Chicago will be the site of a digital manufacturing institute backed by $70 million in government money and another $250 million of private funding, giving the city, once a factory town, a better chance to re-establish its credentials as a modern maker of things.

The decision, to be announced officially Tuesday by President Barack Obama, was hotly anticipated by city and state officials who recognized the opportunity to jump start high-tech manufacturing as a core component of Chicago’s economic vision. The city today, while still home to some manufacturing, is better known for its financial markets and convention business.

  • The $70 million grant will come from the Defense Department. But far more was at stake, as city officials and business leaders quietly raised private commitments in excess of $5 million each from General Electric, Rolls-Royce, Procter and Gamble, Siemens, Lockheed Martin and The Dow Chemical Co., according to World Business Chicago.
So hundreds of construction jobs, right?
  • The new institute, according to Chicago’s proposal, would be located in a leased building on the northern end of Goose Island. Oversight would be managed by UI Labs, a nascent University of Illinois-affiliated effort focused on turning academic research into moneymaking, job-creating products. UI Labs stands for “Universities and Industries.”
So, no construction jobs? And it's run by U of I people, a state university notorious for catering to and catered by the political elites of Illinois.

Have you read the article yet? Go ahead and read it - we'll wait.

Did you notice anything missing? Anything with a number attached to it? Anything like....hmmm....a total number of jobs to be created? We read it through a few times and there doesn't seem to be any concrete number of permanent high paying professional jobs or middle-class blue collar jobs in this so-called "factory." That's whispering to us that it's going to be populated by grad students and professors, people who (A) work for free or (B) have jobs as professors, but are looking for Department of Defense bottomless grant money.

The Sun Times article also notes no job numbers.

You know how these Obama supported and/or instituted manufacturing concerns go. Initially a lot of money is spent on them, than they go bankrupt, and no one can ever explain where all the millions of dollars went.
Be very afraid.

Wait a minute.
Hopefully this won't end up like the Englewood tech center where a million dollars "vanished" with out receipts to where and who it went.
various "programs" was the response but had nothing to with the dispersal of funds.
I think the great black dad while senator was part of it.
now no one seems to concerned where it went

>>>>> By Melissa Harris and Christi Parsons: 'The idea behind the institute is that manufacturing is being transformed by digital design, which replaces the draftsman’s table with the capacity to work and create in a virtual environment.' <<<<<

Oh, Bullshit. 'Virtual' *this* you two ditzs.

Here's a clue Ace Reporterettes Melissa & Christi, the Draftsman's Table was replaced a long time ago. It was replaced by a desk or table on which a Computer Monitor sat -- and still sits last I looked, which was NOW -- with the 'Draftsmnan' using a CAD Program to draw, in 2D & 3D.

Here's another clue sweety-pies, anything and everything that's under the sun that's manufactured requires a 'Blueprint' to be drawn, and even with a computer & CAD program, a hard paper copy is made.

Also, even with the Draftsman using said CAD Program in lieu of pencils, paper, straight edge, and triangles, you will still find at least one Drafting Table in every Engineering/Drafting Department. That's because sometimes it's just easier and faster to draw something by hand. Though granted, us old time 2H pencil users are becoming pretty frickin' scarce.

--- ps: The term 'Blueprint' is really a misnomer as they haven't been used since the 1960's. The working drawings, aka; 'prints', became 'Blue Lines', and now with large copiers everywhere, Black Line 'prints'.

*** an aside: The ironic thing is that I was & am probably the worse free-hand drawer in the world. I can't draw a straight line to save my life, and I never could. But give me a drafting table & paper and I'm Michel-fuckin-angelo (LOL).

it's election time..

this is the perfect tool that can be used to give campaign workers clouted positions.

meanwhile, they can rape any new innovative ideas from students working as interns for zero wages, give paying positions to foreign h1-b and student visa holders with the higher math and science scores and anything else can go to the illegal immigrants that come here to do the jobs americans don't want to do.

let's get real here. they are not creating wealth. they are redistribution wealth and in spite of what you might think the redistribution is not going to the middle class or the people in poverty.

the wealth is coming out of things like our wages and our pension funds and going to corporate exec's and bankers using the tired ol' they are the job creators that deserve more tax breaks lie.

and what is this programs mission statement.

why it's to innovate manufacturing to improve effeminacy which destroys jobs.

it's mission also involves the military. so hey if they can finally build an autonomous robo-cop there is no longer any need to fear backlash from the rank and file over immoral orders that go against humanity.

the tyrants will have total control then.

yeah, yeah, tin foil hat conspiracy talk. i know, i know.

obama got rid of how many many military commanders now...how many.

how many because he 'could no longer trust them' google it.

i am reminded of rahm's plan to celebrate the chicago fire and the death and devastation and hardship that the fire caused by floating flaming barges down the chicago river. attempting to attract tourist to his river walk.

monetize the tragedies.

how about we celebrate the holocaust by loading people in box cars. we have some huge rail yards. we could post messages on the new electronic billboards 'this way to the showers'

that should get us some tourist eh. it would be good fun.

then, how about a re-enactment of the haymarket riot tragedy and what was the name of that ship that capsized on the chicago river long ago with hundreds aboard it. the eastland i think it was.

if we do the eastland disaster thing there could be clouted political hacks fist fighting over who's in charge of the rescue and recovery of the bodies in the water.

with Easter coming up city leaders could bury human skulls and bones in maggie daley park and instead of doing an egg hunt the tourist can be handed shovels to dig for them in a john w. gacy celebration / re-enactment.

oh. i'm sorry... that's not offensive is it.

The 70 million dollar grant will come from the tax payers.

-------------------------------

no-no. the 70 mil. dollar grant will first come from the fed. in newly printed money.

after a few weeks or months then the 70 mil. plus interest will come from the taxpayers. hahaha.

the political apparatus will need to lump this debt all together with other debt using one of those huge front loading washing machines that you see at your local laundromat...

ya gotta mix it all up.

cuz upon the completion of 'the debt' spin cycle the tiny portions of debts actually created 'for the children' --- well that label can be applied to the entire load to present the conjured up image the entire debt was used for a noble and worthy cause don't you see.

funny thing too about the word grant eh.

a grant implies that the money doesn't have to be paid back.

but the grant money comes from taxes and taxes come from the taxpayers.

we have no extra money just lying around and so of course the money has to be paid back it's borrowed money.

what you see here is a direct transfer of wealth going on right in your face. the clouted friends of rahm and obama don't have to pay it back -- here's two hundred million go have a campaign fund raising party. they get the money and we get the credit card bill while they tell us how proud they are to be able to do this for us.

Get Obama to grant me 100 million buckos and I'll come to Chicago, play footsie with your UNIONs, build a 'green' plant, give myself a 1 million dollar salary a year and 'golden parachute' retirement plan.

Of course I'll donate to Hillary, Rahm, and whatever councilmen's campaign fund to get the thing going.

Then when it goes bankrupt, I'll go back to Texas with lots of money and leave you with, uh, the green company and whatever and blame it on Ted Cruz or Bush.

Those job numbers are just propaganda.

Kinda like those unemployment figures that never quite manage to get it right.

And you are right about the U of I.
State university systems are the new repositories/ATM machines for political hacks and clout-heavy nobodies. If you're juiced and have no other place to go, you can always go to work in the U of I system as an "administrator," "counselor," "chancellor" or even teacher.

This is one of the biggest reasons college tuition keep growing at a rate that is 3-4 times the rate of inflation.

Another price we pay for dirty government.

whereas at foxcon suicide nets had to be installed to keep employees from jumping off the roof to their deaths.

hey, but even gary knows that you should be careful of the words that you choose to use. the words conjure up images.

nevertheless with the defense department money involved prolly more like an nsa front operation to find more ways to intrude in everyone's privacy.

ibm, cisco and other usa high tech firms have already taken huge hits on international sales of their products from the current nsa/corporate backdoor spying scandals. so we wonder who will buy anything created out of this operation other then the us military.

The obama administration eloquently proclaimed high tech green jobs for the new American workforce. Lots of your tax money, or more realistically worthless printed money infused into the market by the the fed, was used to fund these companies through the stimulus plan. We’re focused like a laser beam on job creation for the new economy. The result? The high tech green companies with their politician sponsors promised 21st century high paying tech jobs. Promises made and promises broken. The firms with their subsidies which went bankrupt include: Solyndra (535 mil), Sunpower (1.2 bil), Friskar Automotive (529 mil), Brightsource (1.2 Billion). In total, 34 subsidized green companies went belly-up reaping lots of taxpayer’s money ultimately leaving working stiffs to pay the freight. Illinois politicians are cut from the same cloth as those politicians in D.C. What makes you think this will succeed given lots of someone else's free unaccountable money to squander without consequences? I hope I'm wrong but history always seems to repeat itself. Politicians not magicians made lots of public money disappear into thin air.

Chicago's black youth unemployment is estimated to be 92% in a Chicago Urban League report published in Jan/2014. Those collecting S.S.I. may have been included in this figure and may skew this statistic. This is obama's hometown. Has the Chicago Public Schools prepared their students to compete for these futuristic jobs or gain entry into the U of I? Can CPS prepare urban youth for these technical challenging jobs? If these youth were adequately prepared for such technical jobs maybe they would be less inclined to gain sustenance by selling drugs and shooting up the rival corners. Employment of urban youth in challenging new industries may indeed be the solution to combating violence. Now if we can get those democrats to provide grants, subsidies and seed monies to the schools, to the youth and to the firms who seek to employ these scientifically skilled youth.
