Partial Victory
We had suspected that a Cook County jury would have acquitted these mopes, but were surprised they got part of it right:
- The so-called NATO 3 were convicted today of two counts of mob action, but not the more serious charges of terrorism.
They were also convicted of one count each of possessing an incendiary device to commit arson, a charge that carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison. But all three were acquitted of three other counts of possessing Molotov cocktails as well as an additional arson count.
The five-woman, seven-man jury deliberated almost eight hours over two days before reaching its verdict for Brent Betterly, 25, Jared Chase, 29, and Brian Church, 22.
As you see, they were convicted of possessing an incendiary device, but acquitted of possessing a Molotov cocktail - an actual incendiary device. We have no idea what that means, but we suspect is has something to do with the average intelligence of a Cook County juror.
Lawyers for the defense called it a victory, meaning they'll likely get paid by someone and their clients won't be locked away for life automatically.

"You know what, I would bring these charges again because you know what we did, we saved people from being hurt,” she told reporters at the Leighton Criminal Court Building. “Do we have to wait for a Chicago police officer to be set on fire? I don’t think so … Have we forgotten about Boston here? Have we forgotten about homemade bombs in backpacks?”
While we appreciate the sentiment, Anita's office has notoriously undercharged for years, and always gone for the plea when available. We're glad these guys will be getting some time in prison and certainly hope they won't be teaching at an Illinois university once they get out like certain other bombers we could name.

I have to agree with that jury, SCC. These chooches made those molotovs with the undercovers alright, but according to the Trib the male undercover then took control of them after the fact. I saw the press conference on CLTV, where that kook Anita attempted to connect this investigation/case with the Boston bombings, and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think these guys would've even had the guts to toss any of these "molotovs" to begin with, and had they made them correctly and had they tried, the only person who would've ended up on fire would have been they themselves (not to mention that they would've taken on a healthy dose of lethal force had the attempt been made). Bottom line is that the City gave up the appropriate funds and resources to the department, minus fresh food and water, and the training and tactics were in place go set knuckleheads like these on their asses, had they brought it down there at McCormick Place.

The judge is a defense guy. He threw a mob action in and it confused the jury in my opinion. The jury I heard had really dumb questions too. The fact is these guys would have used Molotovs and other things against the police. I am pretty sure they would have incited something. Don't read the papers either because they all hate the police.

Alvarez is a hyprocrite and poltical prostitute. She refuses to press charges against a murderer in Vanecko (as Richie didn't want them) and now she says it's an abomination the NATO got off easy (as Rahm wanted a tough sentence). I guess once you're dead, you don't need any protection and you do whatever your trick wants you to do.
The UCs weren't really UC taking into account that their location and Op were whispered around the station prior to these arrests. It's not difficult to glean from somebody's loose lips, that the UCs case and testimony would would also follow suit. Too many wrong people in crucial spots makes this job exactly what it is.

From my point of view living in Boston, the only difference I see between your NATO 3 and the Boston Marathon bombing Tsarnaevs is that the NATO 3 were stopped.
Those NATO 3 idiots exhibited every intention of causing just as much murder, mutilation and mayhem as the twisted Tsarnaevs. And the Tsarnaevs are proof that idiots can assemble incendiary devices without blowing themselves up. And deploy them.

The lackluster state prosecution here in crook co. could not convict a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Believe me, if it was an officer on the other end of this investigation, they would have thrown the book at him for having a zippo and a pack of malboros in his possession- and won. Then again, having a jury picked from a pool of slack jawed, drooling, simpletons with I.Q.s comparable of a blade of grass, easily distracted by shiny objects, and half of whom use English as a second language, probably didn't help either.

Wow you gathered that the case was Swiss Cheese and Chiklo and Uygun weren't very smart just by listening to the closing arguments? How would you have handled the UCO operation? Do you read the last ten pages of a book and write up a criticism of that too? I'm grateful it was one less thing thrown at me during the protests. I'm grateful two officers turned their lives over to the department for awhile to work on this case.

They put these young college looking coppers into Intelligence and think they know what they are doing, you need to be the police before you go into these cush units period. They don't take direction well and the know it all SGTS. don't seem to have any background in police work either.Narrow it down and this is what you get, a weak case and a whole lot of flawed police work by inexperienced officers.

I can't stand the police bashing from fellow officers I am hearing here!! One so-called copper on here cites the Tribune article for his "FACTS" about what went on in the case. Listen Officer Strokebag, if you are relying on the Trib for your facts you should turn in your star because you are a dumbass.
The CPD brass threw a bunch of people together on SHORT notice to combat possible terrorism for the NATO conference! It is the brass you should be bitching about. These UCs did a phenomenal job...they were very green officers and their supervisor sucked. Let's hear how great you would have done with a few years on the job (with no UC experience) and a Sgt that knows nothing, but thinks he is the smartest guy on the department. Remember, these UCs were infiltrators, spending many hours and many days with the targets. They were not simply walking up and buying a bag and then walking away. With little to no experience they burrowed into an inner circle to the point of catching these fools making Molotov cocktails!! That's not good police work, it's great police work. These dudes were truly dangerous and 009th District owes these officers some thanks because 009th District was a main target. How dare you rip on these coppers, you piece of shit!
If you read the statute for terrorism, then you would see the charge fit the crime. The ASA's did a bad job presenting the case and the jury was full of idiots. I was there.

The officers did the best they could under a lot of stress. They tried their best. I went to court. These guys had weapons, they made Molotovs, they were looking for metal pipes, and they had pipe bomb instructions in the house they were staying. Whether they were all talk or not. I would rather not find out. Oh did the news leave all that out? Of course.
Poor work all the way around from the undercover with no time no experience to the arrest. But these idiots did want to set cops on fire not terrorism but still a good job if those coppers had some experience would of been a better case!

After reading the accounts of the actions and their subsiquent testimony of the two under cover officers, all I can ask is: How the hell were they the ones picked to infiltrate?
I'm sure some of the more seasoned officers in Intelligence could have not shaved, washed, cut their hair and bought some patchouli oil and done a good job with those idiots.
Other undercover officers seemed to have done well in the large crowds at NATO, who picked those two nimrods to go to Bridgeport?
At least they took a felony hit for the arson charges.
Now Moe, Larry, and Curly will begin playing the folk-hero role. When they are holding court with all of the other stooges, they will portray their conviction on the lesser charge as part of their master plan.

Stay in school long enough and you can get all kinds of documentation of your academic "achievement". Just because you may have more degrees than a thermometer doesn't mean that you are smart. That you have managed to tell the professors what they want to hear. To express thoughts that that they agree with. There is a difference between education and training.
A person that is really smart does not need to insult and make negative generalizations about people that he does not know in order to make himself feel better.
You have all this education that you are proud of, (and the City spent a lot of money on) yet you need to denigrate others.

Still, I am stuck on patrol.

First of all, I will vote for NO ONE who has been down there, the current regime especially. The only guy I might have voted for made sergeant, Jim McCarthy. Time to take the broom to that office.
After reading the court transcripts I wonder if these " undercover officers" were even trained in working covert ops. It sure does not seem like it. If they were not, the department put their lives in danger. I cannot blame the officers for this, I blame the department for trying to do things on the cheap. Working covert cases takes knowledge, training and practice, especially long term investigations. And, the right equipment.
