Off Duty Shoots Home Invader

  • Two people are in custody after an off-duty Chicago Police officer shot one of three men who tried to break into his home Friday afternoon in the Far South Side Roseland neighborhood, police said.

The officer was at home in the 9600 block of South Princeton Avenue about noon when the suspects tried to break in, police News Affairs said in a statement.

After one suspect pointed a handgun at the officer, the officer, fearing for his life, fired at him, police said. Two of the men, including the one who was shot, fled in a stolen vehicle, but were halted near 89th Street and Yale Avenue and arrested.
His 7-year-old daughter was home with him. Nicely done Officer.

Nicely done indeed. Protected himself and, more importantly, his family. However, I can't stop myself from thinking why him and his family live on the 9600 blk of south Princeton. Now I know I'm gonna hear, "he should be able to live wherever he wants". That's true. Then again, we don't live in fantasy land. What's more important? Your vested interest in a decayed and rotten "community" or the safety of your children? If the latter, then there are quite a few other neighborhoods in Chicago where the risk to your family is quite a bit lower. Just sayin'.

Home invaders are getting bold. Breaking in during broad daylight, and a cop no less. Obviously three of the very few that did not get the word that crime is now a no-no in Chicagoland. There is a new top cop in town and he is on the job.

Judge wants back on bench after insanity ruling

6:57 p.m. CDT, March 28, 2014

"Can a suspended Cook County judge return to the bench after being declared legally insane at the time she shoved a sheriff’s deputy in 2012?

"For the first time in Illinois, attorneys on the case say, a judicial disciplinary panel has begun tackling the question of whether a judge whose psychotic episodes can apparently be controlled through medication should be allowed to return to the bench.

"Judge Cynthia Brim, 55, testified before the Illinois Courts Commission for more than two hours on Friday in a bid to save her $182,000-a-year job..."

This is how I see it. The big push is for what? CONTACT CARDS. Now .it takes up to 10 minutes to complete a contact card. The wonderfulls want at least 2 a day or more. If thats all a copper does all day that leaves little time to patrol for real crime. Hence the typical city of chicago smoke and mirrors...crime is down.

Why did this happen? Because we are forced to live in the same shithole we work in. If there were no residence requirement the officer could be living in a small town where crime is really down. On top of that the fucking media plasters all over the broadcast his occupation, his house, and the address further putting the officer and family safety at risk. Officer I think you have a pretty good case to present in court challenging the residency rule. Last point, if our union has the slightest inclination on bargaining on our pension ie; higher contribution, colas, later retirement age, etc... You better have the residency rule rescinded as part of the deal. God I hate living in this hell whole!

Then maybe bad luck of having your old Lady out of work. Not having the clout to get promoted, or a spot where you can steal OT. Lastly add the fact we dont get paid much anyways.A bad divorce....ect

Why are so many Officers being targeted in their own homes? Where's the Gang Intelligence Unit on this, asleep at the wheel again? Where's the CPD Plan to actively check residences of ALL CPD Officers, active AND retired ? More CPD Maanagement incompetence and malpheasance. Worried more about the politics than their own officers. Get in the ballgame, CPD SUPERVISION. Why is it you can spend countless hours in meetings about every little issue, but can't meet and develop a plan to protect your own Officers, their homes, and families much better? Officers active and retired, killed in their own Homes, over and over, and you still do nothing, have no Plan, no idea of how to better provide for their safety and security, while you pander to every storefront Reverend, Alderman, and other parasitic Lackeys? You, CPD Management, are truly some disgusting, feckless, sycophants, along with your City Hall Chronies. There was a day before Stooges and Political Hacks completely took over the Police Department Officers and their Families Safety Always came first. Cops back then didn't even have to be told. They did it on their own. Back then, they called it, "Integrity". Todays Comic Book-to-College Cops don't seem to have much, if any, of that. But they do whine like bitches, every time they can't have their way, right away. What a sad, sorry bunch, CPD has become. Can't check on Officers and their homes, but can allow their men to sit in Suburban Restaurants for Hours on end, miles from where they should be patrolling. And the Supervisors who allow it? Still Supervisors. And people wonder whats wrong with CPD....

3/29/2014 01:58:00 PM

That is why if you live on a decent block or neighborhood you need to once again form block clubs, the cops that live on these blocks need to re-inforce into the minds of the other residents that it is NOT OK for these thieving little rats to invade and steal, let the thugs know that they are not welcome, call the police anytime and everytime you see something you don't like. don't let the dispatchers intimidate you when they ask all their stupid questions, and if the police don't come out in a reasonable time call back and ask for a Sergeant to come by too. Thisis what we pay taxes for, and yes I know the old Addage that the bosses tell the off duty police, you couldn't get involved but it's not their call, remember you have a right and obligation to act. Do you job officers and maybe all of our neighborhoods will be safer, wherever you live and whatever race we are.

You are right about one thing- you are an asshole. Not all officers choose to move out of the community they grew up in. A person should be able to live in any part of the city they choose. The good people of Chicago are not to be blamed- blame the bad people.

I am just glad that the good guy won this fight. Let's not forget a month ago a retired Sgt. was shot in the neck after he gave up his property in a home invasion.

I always love happy endings. This ending would be even happier if all three offenders were dead. But I will take this ending over a more tragic one in which the good guy is hurt or dead.

Nice job officer. You did a good job considering the circumstances and I hope you and your daughter get well soon from the stress of this event.

Calm down and take a sedative. Killed in their homes ,over and over? You make it sound like an epidemic.
Actively check residences of all po's and retired po's. Thats like 20,000 checks. Get real. Wheres the manpower for that. The guys on the beat car need all the help they can get.
Agree with you on SOME of the officers becoming whiners when they cant have their way, but there are plenty of new aggressive officers doing their jobs. Let them do their job and I will take care of myself,my family and my house like I have since I started on the CPD.

And that, people, is why I sleep with my .25 under the pillow!!

3/29/2014 05:01:00 AM

And that, dumb ass, is why you'll have an accident. They make mattress holsters, you fool.

3/29/2014 08:38:00 PM

You need to take an NRA safety class. You would learn that a loaded gun under you pillow is pretty stupid, and that a .25 caliber is not a good personal defense round.

Not a cop..
Can u legally shoot someone that breaks into your house that doesn't have a weapon? For instance, u hear them come in and hide in the closet and when they come into the room you blast away. Just wondering??

3/29/2014 09:36:00 PM

I'm in fear for my life if someone breaks into my home while I'm trapped inside. And I'm really in fear if they're advancing toward me telling me they're going to kill me.

How about open up residency so we can live outside of this shithole city... Most of us live in ok parts of the city but crime is on the rise everywhere here, some of us have families to support and cannot move to the nicer neighborhoods in this city.
Someone please give us a fighting chance, I personally don't care if this city burns, I just want to live far from the flames!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It's not going to happen. Get used to living where you live, protect yourself and your family and bail after you retire.

There is a lot of truth to your statement.Old Retired White Guy went off the edge a bit....but This is where we get our news from.No more roll calls to attend. Maybe I/He, worked with a PO or his/her family member involved in something that hit the news.
It beats the MSM, and kinda keeps you in touch with a job and people that you spent over 1/2 your life on.

This is a shit thing to say. Should the late Sgt. Elmer Brown have not lived where he lived? Tom Wortham? Officer Bailey? Tell me where this brave officer should live? Englewood? Pullman? West Beverly? Mt. Greenwood? Sauganash? Hegewisch? The East side. Pick any of those neighborhoods and tell me where burglars, home invaders, thieves and rip off artists don't prey on people.

Open your eyes buddy. Whe you run from the emeny, you embolden the enemy.

Exactly... Why should ANY CPD officer move, unless he or she wants to move ? Isn't it bad enough the Chicago DemocratPoliticians have already pussified the Department totally, now we should run and hide from thugs too? Why doesn't Department Supervision come up with a plan to do spot checks on its officers residences? Amazing how they can jump thru Hoops every time Father Flakey, or some other slack-jaw Reverend opens his Trap wanting something done,, but can't even attempt to do something for their own officers to improve their Safety & security. The useless FOP doesn't help anything either. Buncha Whistle-Dicks. , yet they all want coppers to go out and bust their Balls for them, 24-7, non-stop. What a bunch of phoney, incompetent imbeciles, CPD is led by, starting at City Hall, all the way on down. Fuck working hard at all for theses incompetent Ass-Clowns with their Mixed-Up, Politically - Correst Priorities.

3/29/2014 08:09:00 AM

Not Really. These lowlife Gangbanger-Thugs are perfectly capable of following you out to a suburban Home just as well. It might take them a bit more effort, but they can still easily do it if you are not aware and alert. It's happening everywhere across the Country, and will just get worse if Amnesty is allowed. There's No Guaranteed safety in the suburbs, or small towns anymore. Don't think moving out of the City will assure your safety, it will just get you fired for violating the Residency Clause you signed when the City hired you.

Well, I'm retired and grateful for the 014th district car that still makes a run by the house most days at the beginning of their tour. (Yes, I sometimes see you, even though I can't get to the porch fast enough to wave.) Usually, that's the only time my block sees a squad car each day. The neighbors are grateful, too, guys. Thanks, again.

I'm glad this situation worked out for this officer. Having said that, I wouldn't have left my home to go outside and pursue them with a 7 year old child inside. My main duty would be to remain inside of my home and keep my family safe. Hard to do that if you're running outside confronting three. But I'm glad it worked out ok.

Well, wait my friend. Unless you leave this job for greener pastures, or wind up being killed on this job, you will one day
find yourself a retiree. That day will come sooner than you can ever imagine.
You don't understand now, but you will. Why do we come here? Because we don't forget our brothers and sisters who
are still out there. That's why.
