Suspended Animation
- NEITHER dead or alive, knife-wound or gunshot victims will be cooled down and placed in suspended animation later this month, as a groundbreaking emergency technique is tested out for the first time.
Surgeons are now on call at the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to perform the operation, which will buy doctors time to fix injuries that would otherwise be lethal.
"We are suspending life, but we don't like to call it suspended animation because it sounds like science fiction," says Samuel Tisherman, a surgeon at the hospital, who is leading the trial. "So we call it emergency preservation and resuscitation."
The technique involves replacing all of a patient's blood with a cold saline solution, which rapidly cools the body and stops almost all cellular activity. "If a patient comes to us two hours after dying you can't bring them back to life. But if they're dying and you suspend them, you have a chance to bring them back after their structural problems have been fixed," says surgeon Peter Rhee at the University of Arizona in Tucson, who helped develop the technique.
This has other implications (interstellar travel), but there's the issue of most gunshot and knife-wound victims aren't always the type of people who need saving, (i.e. dope dealers) who would be saved only to inflict more pain and misery upon a community that doesn't really need any more of that.

The bad guys might not be worth saving, but they'll do fine to practice this technique on.
Doctors used this technique in 2007 on Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett right after he dislocated the spinal cord in his neck. Everett believes that this cold therapy was instrumental in his ability to walk again.
Tort lawyers are on the case, I'm sure.

This article failed to mention that this procedure was first perfected using CPD Brass. However, instead of a cold saline solution, Kool-Aid was used to replace the blood.

Will this be covered by a LEO's Medical Insurance due to a LoD incident that should have resulted in LoDD 10 years ago?

I totally agree with you. I just hit a squirrel on my way home from work this morning and I had to watch its writhing, twitching body bleed out in the street from my rear view mirror. It wasn't the little guys fault. He was raised to not care about 20000 lb vehicles or traffic signals for that matter. I just wish there was more that I could have done. Does anyone know if squirrels are included in the "Suspended Animation" study? Serious replies would be greatly appreciated.

Used to this, and actually pretty infrequent...but everyday human motorists act worse, accelerate frantically to get ahead of you and then cut you off suddenly making right turn a couple feet in front of you. To get to their urgent driveway 100' away.

Ive killed people before because I was met with force that would have killed me. One of those times I was shot at 8 times and I shot two magazines of rounds before I killed him. I would do it again because at that point it was me or him and He made his choice... but karma is a bitch, what if one of those 8 rounds hit its mark and I was the one on the ground gurgling? Would it be so funny then? Would I still be soft as puppy shit then? No. Coppers love standing around a dying or dead body and make fun or it, talk shit or say things to the guy dying like "go to the light", I hope you die animal etc.. What would you want people to say to you as you laid there dying?? There are two sides to life.
