Ten Years Later

  • The death this week of a woman beaten up more than a decade ago in the East Garfield Park neighborhood has been ruled a homicide, authorities said.

Shantil Moore, 28, who had been living at a nursing home in the 2400 block of West Touhy Avenue, was pronounced dead at Kindred North Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Following an autopsy today, the medical examiner’s office determined Moore had died from sepsis due to complications of cervico-spinal injuries suffered in an assault, and her death was ruled a homicide.

The victim had suffered head and body injuries following an attack suffered about 11:45 p.m. Aug. 4, 2003, in the 200 block of North Homan Avenue, and had been initially hospitalized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said Police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti.
We assume there will be a press conference raising the homicide totals from 2003 by one? Or will the bean counters just pretend it never happened? The article also says no one was ever charged for the initial beating, so the clearance rate might not be getting a bump either.

None of the Chicago sites have a pic of the victim, and Google Images doesn't turn one up either.  But with a name like "Shantil", this appears to be the sort of crime that the media studiously ignore out of "sensitivity" concerns.  The crime stats will be buried along with the victim.

This almost like something you would read in "Crooked City".

She died in 2014, it's a 2014 homicide. This happens all the time. Someone shot or beaten ends up as a veggie in one of those caretaker hospitals, and then dies of sepsis years later. Autopsy done and it's ruled a homicide as a result of whatever injuries suffered during initial assault. No arrest back then, probably not much investigation, so the department has to eat this one as far as clearances. Once in awhile though, an arrest had been made and the offender was charged with agg batt, tried, convicted, and sentenced. After the offender serves his time, the victim dies in similar circumstances as this case, and the offender is arrested and now charged with homicide. I've seen this happen once or twice.

"You know there will be confrontations. Just stand back and see what happens."

-- Supt. McCarthy

This is what happens.

"...woman beaten up more than a decade ago in the East Garfield Park neighborhood has been ruled a homicide...died from sepsis due to complications of cervico-spinal injuries suffered in an assault..."

Beaten up.

Dead.

Paul Koschman. Beaten up. Dead.

But...but...the assailants were "unarmed!"

So? An unarmed Trayvon or Vanecko can kill you just as dead as someone with a gun.

The Marquis of Queensbury rules for a "fair fight" do not apply. The "Use of force" chart applies. One step higher...and you might live.

CCW.

NAC in Texas: I just finished reading Crooked City. What kind of unholy cesspool of a city do ya'll live in. I found it incredible that such a combination of ultra-liberal lawyers, judges and reporters were allowed such power and such a following by the populace. Setting stone cold killers free and than trying to put honest cops in jail, or ruin them, just for doing their job. I am sure that there are a few rough edges in the CPD, and occasionally a corner is cut, this is ridiculous.

I thank God I live in Texas and not Cook Co. We have our problems with liberals, but they don't rule and we manage to execute our worst criminals, not set them free.
