Fire and Re-Hire!

  • A year after Camden disbanded its police department and brought in a new one with more officers on the street, reported crime has dropped significantly in a city that still ranks as dangerous by any measure.

After years of doing little more than responding to emergency calls, police are on intensive neighborhood patrols, a move that has sent drug dealers scattering. But residents, advocates and officials agree that law enforcement alone can go only so far to heal a city that is also among the nation's most impoverished.

  • The bold effort to fix the problem was to get rid of the city police department and the union contract that city officials found onerous. The city contracted with the Camden County government, which built a new police force. The Camden County Metro police patrol only in Camden, not its suburbs. Clerical, analytical and crime-scene processing jobs once done by gun-carrying sworn officers were given to civilians, and most of the cops were put on beats on the street.

The new department — featuring many of the same officers and the same chief — took over officially on May 1, 2013. When a new class graduates from the academy and hits the streets in July, the city will have more than 400 police officers, up from about 175 at its lowest.
Fire everyone, then hire them back at a fraction of the wages, reorganize and ::ta-da!:: no more pension problems!

And most cops and firemen thought it was just teachers. There was no way the city would come after us. I knew this was happening in Camden in 2010. Yes, there was a small department there, but we have been down 4-5k officers and they are hiring how many how quickly? We will see after this summer... The city workers MUST ALL band together against this prick and back up the quote that was on his Chicagoland show that he orchestrated... "Chicagoans don't put up with the bullshit."

No state standards.

Zero tolerance enforcement of MCC violations geared toward forcible extraction of revenue from the tax payers.

Any former CPD will be hunted, harassed and disarmed?

The Public will cheer the madness anyway.

Right?

Maybe if the Police Officers in this city would do some work we wouldn't have to worry about this. Maybe if we would agree to civiianize inside jobs we wouldn't have this problem. The truth is the majority of the Chicago Police dept does little or no work.

I'm a supervisor. I asked one of my cars the other day why they came in with 1 parking ticket (the parking ticket was a job) and nothing else? They immediately said I was harrassing them. They generated nothing. They didn't back anybody up. They were wasting gas. They being the little crybabys that they are went to se the Lt the next day. God forbid they do some police work.

It's not all about pay, either. WORKING CONDITIONS have a whole lot to do with employee satisfaction. Why have you seen so many police officers from the CPD bailing in droves, even among the executive ranks? Because the job has digressed over the past 5 or so years into a hostile work environment. When you see a cmdr of 022 abdicate the chair in less than a year, you know there are some serious wrongs going on at the job.

Seriously? Chicagoans DO put up with this bullshit, and are famous for doing so for decades. They are utterly dependent on the city government for just about everything at this point, and continue to vote for the same people that continue to destroy them. There is no unity. There is no marching. There is no coming together. There is pissing, moaning, and that's about it. The time to make a statement happened the day Rahm was allowed to stay on the ballet after not even being a resident. We are going to get steamrolled. Actually, we ARE BEING steamrolled. And that's what Chicagoans are famous for. Being blindsided, rolling over, looking the other way, and cheering for a sports team or admiring the bean while their future is in flames right in front of them.

Be glad you don't work for us at Finance. You are Expected to do 1 parker per 30 minutes OR call your Supervisor Over the Air and tell them you can't find Any Illegal Parking anywhere in your Beat.

But maybe you're right.

How dare a Sgt or Lt (merit or legit test taker) expect you to do something to justify that 61,530 a year paycheck.

Crime Prevention by Visibility is a great thing. But it isn't the only thing you are expected to do during your shift. Law Enforcement Officer also covers Municipal enforcement of parking and vehicle compliance.

Run some darn plates and see if they match the vehicle they are on...hit a dealership for parking their cars on the street with no plates and a covered VIN (like over by Milwaukee and Karlov).

Not hard to at least do something that lets your boss know you're not a waste of O2.

We also have about 1500+ supervisors.

We are currently budgeted for about 13500 sworn personnel. The Department has fluctuated between 11000 and 13800 for the past fifty years. The major difference is we have a population of about 800,000 less than 50yrs ago, when staffing levels were around 11000.Of course 1964 was not as violent as today, but 1984 was and 1974 and 1994 were more so.

First you are wrong about the CPD being budgeted for 13,500 You are a year behind. Rahm wrote out about 1200 pos from the budget last year.
If the population is down 800,000 why would we need the same number of po's. That makes no sense, as the city population decreases, you keep the same number of po's.

Your story from the original post is not credible.
CPD budget for sworn personnel is approx 12,300 after the mayor wrote out over a 1,000 last year.
At this time there are a little over 12,000 sworn members on the job. You don't have to believe me, call the pension board, they have the figures. Check CLEAR and run the codes of po's, bosses, etc and you will get that amount.
No reason the pension board would lie, they give you the number of sworn personnel paying into the pension, plain and simple.

4/30/2014 08:31:00 AM
**********************
He might be a troll, but FDR and George Meany, national secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Labor opposed collective bargaining rights for government employees.
Municipal employees used to make shit wages. They got great pensions and nice health care packages. Extra vacations and lots of holidays made these a desirable job even though the pay was low. Now, after 30 or 40 years of recession proof wage increases, oh, they were small raises, but they were never ending raises that have now culminated in many run of the mill municipal employees making a six figure wage package. The tax payer pays for this. The only ones that get a better deal are the public aid recipients, they work zero and are always getting a new perk added to their employment package or a small, never ending increase in their benefit package.

Tell me now, if it were your business, would you pay that much money to all of those people in your roll call for what they do? I think not. Would you pay public aid recipients what they get? Of course not.

Unless the economy can get turned around and get some real revenue growth through increased private sector activity, be prepared for a haircut. The public views us as lazy and overpaid. The thing I don't understand is why they don't think of welfare breeders the same way? They do absolutely nothing and are always lining up to get whatever government largesse that's available, that is, when they're not locked up for breaking the law.

I was unsure of Rahm's success in eliminating the 1400 spots. Most of the articles that came up in google just spoke of him wanting to. I finally found the right one, so 12300 budgeted sounds about right.

As far as the force increasing in the past fifty years, and now decreasing, I think it has more to do with the increase of assholes in this city and the amount of good people that fled. I got those numbers from the book End of Watch which despite Burke's input is a pretty good source. I'm not happy about being down 2k from what we were several years ago, but there is no way we are down 4-5k.

My Sgt was the boss. Guys that fucked with him, got a ucking. The thing was, all of us guys with time on, knew the game to a tee. These hair gels want to bring in zero; every day ! Bull shit. In my short lived patrol day's. The W/C said we are down on moves, parkers, etc for the period. He got the numbers he needed plus a few more to keep it close from the year prior.
Let these no time OTJ file their bs grievances that go no where anyway.

If they are affecting the watch, do paper on them saying they might need to see the shrinks. That get's everyone' attention.
For most of these no years OTJ copper', this is their first full time job and they never seen the outside world doing shit work for shit pay like doing road work in minus 20 below weather or the other extreme and make more money.

I blame the supervisors for letting these dog;s run scott free. Bring in a little revenue for the city. City hall see' that copper' are playing this game.

The city did not need revenue whore civilains that would right a squad car and hate coppers, if the copper' of today did their job like 10 short years ago.

Lastly Sgt, rake care of the people that bring in the number'. If the zero check off copper', see and don't like it, fuck em.
