- In the inner city, a health problem is making it harder for young people to learn. The Centers for Disease Control said 30 percent of inner city kids suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The CDC said these children often live in virtual war zones. Doctors at Harvard said they actually suffer from a more complex form of PTSD that some call “hood disease.”
Unlike soldiers, children in the inner city never leave the combat zone. They often experience trauma, repeatedly.
Once again, it's nobody's fault - society is to blame!

What ever happened to the himicide Det That tried to get a disability with PTSD for seeing so many dead bodies. The argument was simple... And there was no lack of bodies- he said the damage was done and he had a shrink back him up.
You can blame the real culprits. Blame George W. Bush and the radical republican congress and the Tea Party. They are the ones that traumatized these poor minorities.
And the democrats are giving them another excuse to collect some kind of benefit.

Being a copper myself I too suffer from PTSD. From everything that has happened to me on this job... Oh wait, kidding. Any copper claiming PTSD from this job needs to quit. I've been in two car accidents and three shooting, still fine. Grow a pair.

What exactly do you mean by that, SCC? Society is causing it, not the kids suffering from PTSD like symtoms, so who is to blame? This theory has been circulating since the late 80s-90s. Not far fetched by a long shot. Witnessing a shooting/murder isn't something most just block out of his/her memory and expierincing it repeatedly creates a mind frame of being stressed more over the violence than the task at hand, unlike a trained soldier would be and yet it also still affects them.
They're only awake 8-10 hours a day. So as I see it, we spend just about the same time in the "box" as they do! Can we catch "the hood" too?

This finding does not surprise me. Actually I agree but the real problem is that society enables this because instead of taking action to rectify the problem they make up excuses and continue to allow the behaviors that cause the violence. Why do they do this you ask, well because they dont want to offend anyone.

Marines, army, any service men, police , fire , and many first responders might suffer from PTSD...waking up at 3pm to go gang bang and sell dope and hang out till 3am in the morning while partying and drinking is not PTSD its called bad parenting and social culture that's been hindered by the abuse of link, wick, government assistance etc...etc..etc...Don't you think its time to take the blame and accountability on yourselves and stop blaming everyone else...for the nonsence thatd happening in your neighborhoods. SCC, let me list a run down on many of these so called "Studies" that have shown why children can't achieve in academics;
- eating paint chips/ lead exposure
- lack of nutrients/proper food
- fear of walking to school, e.g. gang violencence/ recruitment
- one parent house holds e.g. no father around/ single mother upbringing
- lack of schools
- lack of quiet place to studies
- PTSD the HOOD disease
- ... Many, many more but we get the point.
Google or Bing any one of these topics and you will notice the common demoninator is liberal academia making yet another excuse or crutch for Big City youths to give them a pass at low school performance. And I'll even bet that here in Chicago and other larger urban cities they will make a connection with the above list, mainly the HOOD disease and the skyrocketing murder rates of kids killing kids!

Along these same lines, we seem to have a VERY disturbing trend going on in 011. The number of officers who have died from cancer, the number diagnosed and still fighting it, and the number of young, otherwise healthy people diagnosed with debilitating diseases is grossly out of control. When compared to the average population, the incidence of cancer and other diseases of people that work in 011 is through the roof. We have had at least 4 cancer related deaths in the last five years, and several other diagnosed cases. There are also at least 4 other people (that I know of) that have been diagnosed with other health conditions that would be considered scarce in a population of the same size that don't work in 011. Our building was built in the 70's and has been plagued with mold, asbestos, leaking sewage, decades of dust and dirt in filters and vents and God knows what else. These health problems and deaths are NOT coincidental. But the city can't be bothered with it. Just bring in those contact cards and suffer silently.

I just saw two separate T.V. broadcasts with interviews at an overnight school protest in Gresham. Operation PUSH had their representative complaining the school was not receiving adequate funding. This PUSH mouthpiece complained the proposed new school has a larger operating budget which equates to bottom line, more money. The same theme was advanced by interviewed parents. Neither a peep nor a mention of the goal of the school to advance and to educate the tender precious students. The minor children were assembled as props sitting in the school building corridors past curfew in protest. Absent were there success stories like improved math or reading scores. None. Zero. Nada.
What is the real agenda? More funding, more money, fatter budgets or sideshows like educating the children. Is this school focused like a laser beam on educational accomplishments or the acquisition of more loosely controlled “discretionary” monies? We need to keep this education thing real.
Look at what the Veteran's Hospitals have done for those who served their country regarding treatment for PTSD. Look at their disgraceful performance which has come to light including 40 deaths in Arizona. The Veteran's Hospitals were on display and a trial run for federally funded healthcare. Kind of like a trial run for federally controlled universal healthcare. A train wreck in the making. This healthcare system is destined to come off the tracks with the frequently of the federally managed national rail transportation system known as Amtrack. All aboard for universal healthcare. Next stop is absolute bureaucratic control of 1/6th of the nation’s G.D.P. The train is rolling down the tracks soon to derail a once sought after and internationally admired medical care system. Chugga-chugga cho-choo!
We owe it to these people and their children to greatly improve their lives. No matter how much it costs, we must do out duty to them.

PTSD is real and a lot of you have it but don't realize it, or you just try to drink your thoughts away. I was diagnosed with it last year. After trying to drink my problems away for many years. I'm not debilitated by it and would not even think of trying disability for it, but it effects every person differently. After 21 years of working the ghetto and being a part of and seeing violence almost every day, I'd be a lot more worried if it DIDN'T effect me negatively!
And while it can be seen as an excuse by us cynical conservatives, there really can't be any doubt that the violence these kids see is going to have a profound effect. That's just common sense! I' bet that is why we have so many shooters out there today. And in the next 5 - 10 years there will probably be even more.

When I started reading this, I thought it was a joke.
I grew up in Englewood and stayed to Dec. 76. I had PTSD before I came on the Job. I got some pre-academy training there. I think my "Hood Disease" made me a better police officer. But does "Hood Disease" apply to me? I was in Englewood before it changed so it may not. I wonder if it's too late to get SSI? Gotta go now, it's time for the my bottle of champagne!

Sure.
Anyway, yes, a cop should consider quiting if they suffer from PTSD or something similar because it's a very serious disease and continuing work would probably only make things worse on them selves. Don't you guys have to see a therapist after you have to shoot someone? You don't have to be in combat or even repeatedly experience something traumatic to even have it. My God! I know this is a very conservative site but when did the mind frame of conservatives change to "every one is looking for an excuse"?
My husband has been to Afghanistan twice, read this article and told me he doesn't doubt for one second these kids are suffering from PTSD. It would be almost absurd to think someone constantly experiencing violent events won't have some type of traumatic stress. Another way to get a check or not, I'm going to have to side with the sympathizers on this one.
Their parents, and their parents before them and etc. down the line all grew up in the same shit. Period. The parents were once little kids with no reassurance, no one reading to them or taking any interest in them the way your parents were interested in you. Read John Bowlby's Attachment Theory which basically says that in order to grow up mentally healthy a child must experience a continuous warm, intimate relationship with his mother (or permanent mother substitute)n which both find satisfaction and enjoyment. It is well documented and when it doesn't happen because of all the stresses in their lives--stresses that YOU CANNOT know---well, things turn out like they do on the West side and other impoverished neighborhoods. There are many factors contributing to this phenomenon. But the adults living in the ghetto today were yesterday's children. None of them had what YOU have. Don't be so quick to judge.

The problem I have found working the ghettos with hood rats for over 17 years is that they do not know how to take responsibility for their own actions. They like to place blame on everyone else. They are lazy and would rather NOT attempt to better their lives and social and educational skills so they can move forward and succeed. I have NO empathy or sympathy for these people. They deserve NO restitution in my book. I believe the ghetto needs some tough love. Cut the cord to all the free shit. Let them beg borrow and steal until they learn how to survive without a government hand out. We must have a class war to weed out the members of society that are not contributing. I think this is called thinning the herd. The only way to save the people riding the ghetto train is to stop the train. This is the end of the line. We tax payers and NORMAL members of society want to take back our streets. If it was possible I say gate them all in their own little city so until they learn how to function as productive members of society. Sounds a little harsh but in reality it is necessary. If they want to kill each other so be it. Just do it in their own gates community where the rest of society does not have to deal with them. I love that "Oh that's part of the job" attitude. In your mind it's quite acceptable! Policemen should not be injured as part of their job. You don't seem to think it's wrong if they are. Innocent children should not be hurt either. In a moral world both of these things are wrong! That's why you are a liberal! By the way the trauma is real and unavoidable for the police when they are the ones trying to save these children! That's the reality of your argument!

It is well documented and when it doesn't happen because of all the stresses in their lives--stresses that YOU CANNOT know---well, things turn out like they do on the West side and other impoverished neighborhoods. Watch Vice News' Doc "Last Chance High" about Montefiore High School. EVERY kid has atleast one parent who has murdered someone, beat the other parent, or experienced some type of traumatic stress. Kind of hard NOT to put the blame on someone else when they fuck up (no, I don't mean white people and blaming someone else should not excuse the behavior either) when you are dealing with emotionally unstable 14 year olds (and younger) dealing with shit most 40 year olds can only imagine.

The "Disease" has been acknowledged by the Centwrs for Disease control, who are we to doubt their considerable expertise. The real question is now that this disease has been diagnosed and acknowledge clinically, what are the long term physical and emotional impacts. Couldn't it easily be argued that someone, say a police officer could easily suffer from this stress induced trauma. I would think it only fair that persons who have or had had 5 years active continous service in the so called hood districts be compensated monetarily. I for one feel that making me the Sgt of a north side broom closet with a lake front view would be ample restitution for my years of diligent service in the hood. 3/4-(probably more)-never get caught, much less stop and chat with the Police while voluntarily giving blood for your statistical analysis!
Decriminalized marijuana... Coincidentally, todays Tribune reports that 93% of all misdemeanor marijuana violations resulted in arrest...not tickets and..."The arrests are more of a hassle for violators, who are generally non-violent, researchers say." (I agree again).
Tickets-at $250-$500 a pop. Better off going to court.
That ticket option has only been in effect since August 2012.
So, how well did that work out? Pretty early to actually tell. Arrest a violator for a bag of marijuana takes the P/O off the street for at least a couple of hours. Then there's court. All that equals wasted time and money when the P/O is more effective back in the beat car.
Legalizing it, not decriminalizing it with tickets along with taxing it-could reduce the city's deficit and I agree again-help fix the Pension.
Your theory on Heroin...Heroin comes partly from an opium poppy and is a Schedule 1 Narcotic.
Difficult to compare the two. Heroin has deadly results from the small time street junkie to high fashioned celebrities. Used intravenously, can spread additional sometimes deadly disease.
