Yes, that's sewage and human waste. According to the letter, these plumbing problems have been ongoing for months, the building smells, and lord knows what's growing on the floors and dripping down the walls below. The FOP has been out taking pictures and preparing a safety grievance, but so has Facilities Management who has been notified on multiple occasions but who merely puts up a sign and waits for things to dry out.

These will be the same connected contractors building the new high school named after Obama, the new DePaul arena and hotel, the road to nowhere aka downtown to Chinatown, and of course the enlarged beach/island and reconfiguration of LSD. Nothing but the best for us suffering taxpayers. With the city in such deep debt do we really need any of these projects? NO. Do our corrupt self serving greedy politicians need these projects? YES. You are probably right, once copper waste starts dripping down on the heads of the prisoners, you will get things fixed. The only other suggestion is to set up some porta-potties and tents in the parking lot and work out of there. At least the weather is warming up.
you should see the big air filters that have NEVER been changed out. my buddy works for a company that does all the stores and shopping centers. he tells me they are supposed to be cleaned at least once a month and the filters should be changed no longer that each 2 months. the filters in 001 have NEVER been changed since the bldg was built. They don't care about us. Never have, never will. The toilets and bathrooms and locker rooms. Now that is some sick shit. How about the cleaning people that don't speak English, they use dirty sewer water to mop the floors. a couple coppers have thrown up in their mouths smelling the scum.
And what about the silly clout heavy 001 District Sgt who shot up the ceiling a few weeks ago? Flooded the whole station for a week. And the Sgt that shot up the office and killed a poor type writer and pencil sharpener?

Officers have been directed to poop on the lawn on the south east edge of the building. The city will supply plastic bags that can be used to clean up the poop. Any officer who does not clean up his own poop will be sparred. Officers have been instructed to urinate in the parking lot.

Along these same lines, we seem to have a VERY disturbing trend going on in 011. The number of officers who have died from cancer, the number diagnosed and still fighting it, and the number of young, otherwise healthy people diagnosed with debilitating diseases is grossly out of control. When compared to the average population, the incidence of cancer and other diseases of people that work in 011 is through the roof. We have had at least 4 cancer related deaths in the last five years, and several other diagnosed cases. There are also at least 4 other people (that I know of) that have been diagnosed with other health conditions that would be considered scarce in a population of the same size that don't work in 011. Our building was built in the 70's and has been plagued with mold, asbestos, leaking sewage, decades of dust and dirt in filters and vents and God knows what else. These health problems and deaths are NOT coincidental. But the city can't be bothered with it. Just bring in those contact cards and suffer silently.

Bonnie Amado is a perfect example of a person who actually knows nothing about the engineering side of buildings, she may know the paperwork and its needs, I once was involved with trying to find a spot for police dept. property to be stored, she was involved too, I knew more about the locations then she did. It's not a new station, but 024 has similar problems. Urinals overflow onto the ground all the time, water fountains broken for months, mold growing in arrestee processing rooms. It's ridiculous.

the 12th district- only 17 months since it opened, and which cost 22 million dollars, just had the portable air-conditioning units ( at a cost of approx 4 thousand per week to a private company) put in place for the second consecutive year just yesterday May 15th. Remember, last summer was the 1 st summer in that new 22 million dollar building and the air-conditioning didn't work. ( and at that time the building was only 5 months old, and here we are, not even hot weather has arrived yet, but they are quick to come install these portable units with vents connected to the ceiling ducts. WOW!! but they can't come out to fix the simplest of issues like plumbing ( yes 12 has plumbing problems too ), let alone the other cookie cutter districts like 001? B.S.!!!!! Shit a lot of the windows with the hand cranks don't work, even the electronic ones with the switch,thus rendering them inoperable, and those rolling electronic shades in the community room ( how much did these cost?) broke, fell off just within the last couple of weeks and were tossed in the dumpster. Do the math, spend a couple of hundred thousand dollars ,like cook county did at the old 13th district and bring it up to code and give it a fresh face lift and you could've saved 21 million and kept those 2 districts opened without closing them!. the old 12th district is shuttered but gets used by the television production companies ( probably Ari- 9.5's big Hollywood producer brother.

I heard the plumbers were firemen and we've already had the porta-potties out in the 001st District's parking lot once this year.
this has been going on for a couple of years now...they would just rod it out....finally....when the problem got so bad (recently), they looked into what was actually causing it...which was broken pipes underneath the building when it started to sink...which by the way..., they had to shore up the entire front half of 001 with cement in order to prevent a total collapse.

It only a municipally run building. I’m sure the building engineers and the facilities management are on top of this. It’s only a public building compromising the health and safety of expendable public employees.
Let’s say it was a private business like a restaurant. This building would have been shut down immediately. Daily visits would be made by building inspectors, electrical inspectors, plumbing inspectors and public health inspectors. Agencies such as OSHA and the E.P.A. could provide support and pile on. The city will reap excessive revenues through A.N.O.V.s, other assorted compliance fines and inspection fees. This problem is potentially so costly it will get fixed overnight. The costs are enormous through fines, lost business, legal representation and intangibles such as a loss in the business’s reputation and standing in the community. This business owner can only hope one of their friends is a part-time city council member to smooth thing$ out.
Wouldn’t it be nice to eliminate the double standard? Private ownership and businesses have skin in the game. Public buildings have entrenched perpetually busy building managers, rigorous lengthy red-tape laden paperwork processes and non existent tradesmen. A perfect combination for bureaucratic inaction. It seems building managers would rather prolong or avoid addressing this problem rather than fixing a serious health and safety condition in the workplace which they have been granted responsibility to oversee.
Public buildings and those responsible for its management don’t get ANOV or fines and certainly not rigorous attention to detailed compliance of the municipal code for buildings by so many different probing inspectors. One non enforceable set of rules for government entities. Another set of enforceable rules for those private owners who can be utilized as a funding resource to enhance revenue generating opportunities by the city. Private owners are made an example, making them vulnerable identified targets for civil lawsuits, while things occurring under the watchful eyes of city managers get a pass.
If any officers develop asthma or respiratory ailments consult a rahm campaigh contributing North Shore attorney. Include claims of an unsafe workplace, failure to remedy the unsafe workplace, past safety grievances. pain and suffering. Of course, after lawyers recover the 30% off the top of the payout + hourly attorney fees + filing expenses for all their legal backbreaking hard work. Lots of OSHA legal stuff violated here

The real question is whether or not enough data been gathered on this situation in order to make an accurate assessment of the appropriate response. A team of analysts, preferably from a selective university, clearly needs to be funded in order to research the following inquiries: 1. Is it #1, #2 or a combination of #1 and #2 which causes the undesirable effects? 2. Does a mid-#2 courtesy flush affect the outcome in any measurable way? 3. How do officers' eating and drinking choices contribute to the facility's plumbing functions? Only once the data is accurately assessed can the problem be rectified.

Hey Office, I work in 016 and I agree with what you say. There are some pussy cops here that refuse to curb the shitheads and enforce zero tolerance on them. They would much rather pull the elderly over and berate them for nonsense. These are the same lazy cops who then bitch that the district is being overrun by gang bangers. I apologize for the way they talked to your parents, it's embarrassing. Just remember, these are the same guys who probably sleep in their hole all night and then come out to get their VRI activity and are too afraid to do real police work.
Isn't the 001st district building literally separating? Aren't giant gaps in brick walls evidenced throughout the building and filled with caulking which has no weight bearing structural properties? Shouldn't the contractor be held liable for faulty construction? Lots of these "new" building have leaky plumbing, leaky roofs, sinkholes surrounding sewers in the parking lots, cracking foundations, separating brickwork in exterior walls, uneven floors to name a few problems. Its only public money. What consultants were assigned the task of overseeing the construction of these building assuring only quality material and quality construction methods were utilized?
On the topic of city contractors. How does the city find so many non-English speaking residents to do cement work, drive semi-trucks and pave the streets? When you ask these guys for directions, it is apparent these workmen haven't resided in the city, but somehow are employed working for the city?
Can't they use VRI money to fix the station? Coppers need a working station in order to fight crime and reduce violence.

We hear so much mantra about rebuilding and reinvesting in our infrastructure. Its always the drumbeat for more taxes and lots more spending. Look at the Chicago’s pothole ridden roads which resemble the surface of the moon rather than the roads to the 21st Century. Then there is the 001st district which looks like it just went through a magnitude 5earthquake with separating walls and leaky water pipes. Both are compelling arguments on display that public financed infrastructure projects somehow don’t equate to quality and suggest that somehow someone is cutting corners. Would private money by private investors be invested in such shoddy workmanship on their investment into the 21st century? Maybe Jesse Jr. can get the custodian contract based on his “work” experience absent of any past political connections to get back into the municipally funded money laundering public contract schemes.

Hey 16th district midnite jagoff: thanks for treating the parent of one of our own like shit. If no one knew what a piece of shit you are, they do now. Hopefully someone can return the favor along the way. To the son, I would be up front in traffic court, talk to the city attorney and make sure your Dad and Mom are able to at least try and embarass the jagoff. And a ticket for a minor traffic violation? Please, I give more wave-offs than tickets and they have NEVER been Police or their family members. It's called common courtesy.

I think the most dangerous job is the watch commanders job in 011. Both the third watch and the second watch commanders were diagnosed with lymphoma. One has passed away and the other is very sick. Maybe someday someone will care about the conditions these stations are in but I don't think so...

Dear scc I'm a P.O. in the city I have 8 years on the job, I'd like you to post this if you do not i understand,anyway my dad was curbed for minor traffic violation in the 016 on midnights by the asshole copper I'm not going to say the name,he has 16 years on the job, he gave him a ticket, I do not have a problem whit that, but the way he talked to my parents, he ripped off a fop medallion off of the car, after my dad told him that his son is a police officer, he said I do not give a shit who your son is, really word of devise you funking asshole fuck with a gang member,shitheads not whit middle age working people, you are a just a piece of shit.

That's nothing. The old 023rd District was much worse. When there was heavy rain the sewers erupted through the toilets and flooded about 6" on fecal material in the basement.
When the rains started, PO's would radio the desk crew asking that someone go down there and turn off the valves. But since their lockers were upstairs they didn't GAF-enough to bother.
Finally the valves were closed and toilets shut down.
Good to see how much the higher-ups care...

Pour bleach in the puddles, if there is piss and organic waste in the puddles, it will fizz and foam and offgas from the oxidation. I would take pics and video of that.
An anderson sampler with growth agar plates set to run for 3 minutes will tell you what mold bacteria is in the air and what you are breathing.
mold spores are so small they attach themselves to dust particles.
if ducts are not cleaned and sanitized, the problem will never be solved.

With 8 years experience, you should know your options. I would confront him and ask what happened? If he was a asshole then get a verbal abuse beef. Definitely attend traffic court to fight the ticket. It has been my experience that assholes like the one in 016 are cowards. He could have given the ticket but show respect. Nice to vent on the blog but you need to do more and confront him. Just remember the karma bus.

I think the most dangerous job is the watch commanders job in 011. Both the third watch and the second watch commanders were diagnosed with lymphoma. One has passed away and the other is very sick. Maybe someday someone will care about the conditions these stations are in but I don't think so...

There were several dicks from the old Area 4 that was upstairs from 011 who passed away from cancer too. Something isn't right in that building.
In the new 019, when the temperature hits 90 or above the power in the building fails from some type of electrical overload due to a screwed up electrical system. And every now and then some pipes in the ceiling burst filling the building with the foulest smell imaginable. It's happened in the lockup/processing room and the tact office already. The smell still lingers.
But that building only cost $26 million.
This topic infuriates me. To think that police officers are expected to work in conditions like this goes against what any decent human being would stand for. And yet, do we hear about it anywhere but here?
I just find it amazing that with today's technology a group of young people or new journalists have not thought of creating their own news media group. We have independent blogs, You Tube, servers, encryption, everything someone would need (all free) to start a media group that would not be influenced or edited by any established government or political power structure.
Everybody in Chicago knows that the airwaves are filled with the bullshit issue du jour or whatever message the politicians want out there, delivered by so called "reporters" who are bought and paid for. People with values, people who work, pay their bills, pay their taxes have NO voice anymore. WE are the ones who keep the wheels on, we pay for it all. Without US it would all collapse, but where are we ever remotely represented, except by people like John Kass and Ben Joravsky? Why is it that only "community activists" (read criminals) and anarchists (e.g. Anonymous) are using this technology to get their message out there?
This blog has become a respected, trusted and sacrosanct vehicle for the truth. It is a success because there is an audience for it. It is read by people who want to see their values on display or by people who are afraid they are getting busted. It is proof that respectable citizens know they are being spoon fed bullshit by the mainstream media, that they can discern fact from fiction, propaganda from reality and yet this technology has not yet taken a foot hold with anybody on a grander level, other than for the use of garden variety social communications and announcements.
I know there are a lot of truth activists out there working as individuals, community groups, etc. but they need a common point of entry. Young adults graduating from college today are getting fucked. They know it. And as their parents we know they are going to keep on getting fucked. We instilled our values in them. They believe in the same things as we do. We raised them to be thought leaders. Why they aren't organizing as a generation, like we did, is astonishing. Why it hasn't happened already is amazing...

Hopefully someone can return the favor along the way. To the son, I would be up front in traffic court, talk to the city attorney and make sure your Dad and Mom are able to at least try and embarass the jagoff. And a ticket for a minor traffic violation? Please, I give more wave-offs than tickets and they have NEVER been Police or their family members. It's called common courtesy.

Determine if the super cop inventoried the medallion or caused damage to the vehicle finish upon removing the medallion. If not inventoried, or auto finish marred, hey, get the CR! Same thing in the old 19 at Belmont and Western. So many have had the big Ca and have died or are /have been treated for it. One big asbestos pit. Sorry to all the dicks happy to have transfered there.
If these buildings were built for and owned by private enterprise their lawyers would haul the construction companies into court and demand $millions in damages.
But the city and the CPD does not do this because the construction companies are owned by political pals and campaign contributors and are protected.
Meanwhile we wade through the sewerage and carcinogens.
Why can't the FOP/PBPA bring suit against the city and these companies.

This officer's reputation must be well known where he works. Some gray-haired white shirt(if there are any left) needs to take him aside and have a private talk with him on the facts of life.
No one where I worked except under the most extreme circumstances ever knowingly wrote another cop or family member a ticket. And they could be from anywhere. We have driven some home, brought some of them into the station and sometimes given them a talking to that would make R. Lee Ermey cringe. We like to think we saved a lot of lives and asses that way.

I have given up on the FOP stickers long ago. No one cares, every asshole has one and the meter maids look for them so they can fuck a copper. They are kryptonite and if you have a hat band on the mirror you are a poser or a tool. You get pulled over same as if you don't have one, maybe sooner.
As of today in Area 1 (or central) we have two urinals out of four that are inoperable with bags over them and one shitter (out of three) (with shit included) thats bagged and tagged and will remain that way for who knows how long. Last year we had a flood of raw sewage in the mens locker room WHICH IS ON THE SECOND FLOOR. So much for the theory that shit rolls downhill.

A few years back when Mr. Fallon from F.O.P. was alive and on the case, OSHA was contacted about the mess in the men's locker room in the basement of the old 012 dist. Station. They came out and wrote up the city for exposed asbestos all over the place, no exit lights, missing hand rail on some stairs and an inoperative exhaust fan. Don't know if they took samples of the green/gray slime the was leeching out the wall onto the floor of the old gun range, directly across from the locker where one P.O. Died from a brain tumor. Sadly Mr. Fallon died and so did the investigation. Someone even tore the OSHA notice off the wall where it was posted. No one nos nuttin?
And just what the fuck does posting on a Police blog do?
OSHA,FOP, and who ever else needs to know.

Agreed. With all of the abuse, I wish FOP would stop giving them out. I have no stickers or plates on any of my private vehicles or anything that shows that I am the police. Several years back a few cars on my block were "keyed" by person or persons unknown. Every car that was damaged, my own included, had either a police sticker or FOP medallion on it. After that I removed anything and everything that showed I was the police from my cars.
Best not to have stickers on the car too many shitheads who may notice and bust a window break in thinking you might have a weapon in there then you can run up against some real crazy who might follow you home and cause some real shit best to talk to the officer[s] but I agree confront the guy ask him what happened and take it from there.
This is nothing new in the 001st District. It has been going on for a few years now. The building is falling apart, separating, smelling, dripping, ready to cave in. No one really cares. They just keep patching it up with small "bandaids".
The Commander's office is good, so don't worry.
