Term Limits versus Money

Madigan had his own attorney file a suit to stop a referendum on term-limits from appearing on the ballot. God forbid that Illinois voters actually have a voice in ending the ingrained corruption of this cesspool.

Now comes word that in case the lawsuit fails, Madigan is going to bump the term-limit referendum with a blatant play that flies in the face of economic realities:
  • House Speaker Michael Madigan has teed up a proposal that would put on the November ballot an advisory referendum that would ask voters whether the state’s minimum wage should be increased to $10 an hour by Jan. 1, a move that could help drive Democratic voters to the polls.

Both Gov. Pat Quinn and President Barack Obama have called for increases in the minimum wage. It’s an issue that provides a stark contrast for a re-election-seeking Quinn and other Democrats this fall as they get behind helping low-income workers while Republican Party standard-bearer, multimillionaire Bruce Rauner, has stumbled on the topic.

A big vote in favor of the increasing the state’s current $8.25-an-hour rate also could stiffen the backbones of lawmakers who fear business opponents who argue the price tag is too high.
Madigan's purpose here is two fold - get the "low information" voters to the polls who don't understand Economics 101 and save the jobs of career politicians by bumping a referendum that has a better than average chance of passing. The fact that it would further damage the Illinois economy by jacking up prices across the board and driving out thousands more jobs doesn't seem to concern him in the least.

Madigan is a crafty little Devil. Don't look for a term limit measure to pass. If we had a two term limit in this state for ALL politicians we wouldn't have 90% of the corruption we have today. No one should serve more than two terms.

He is right. It is very very important that NO republicans get elected in Illinois. Only democrats can be depended upon to do the right thing and pass the right laws. Once you get a good democrat in office, it is crucial that you keep him there for as long as possible. Decades is best.

Never trust a republican, they are too radical and have strange ideas about taxes and governing.

No shit, all is lost. Does anyone think Mike, his little girl, 9.5, and potatohead are going anywhere soon? That prick is filing a lawsuit to keep a referendum off the ballot? Something the citizens would prefer but might limit these lazy, corrupt, thieves, to less then 40 years in office.

Pander, freebies, pander, save our ass, pander, line our pockets, pander, etc, etc, etc. A handful of assholes can make millions miserable with only one thing in mind. Me.

We all like to vent but this is really beyond the pale. I guess I continued to be naïve enough to believe the citizens really did have some rights. But it is crystal clear that regardless of what is the right thing to do in Illinois the few will continue to dictate and legislate only what is in their best interest.

Nothing will change this. Vote them out? Yea right. That vortex you see getting larger and larger is Illinois going down the drain. It could be fixed. Look 90 miles north.

Term limits will ensure that only well financed, faceless stooges are elected.

Rauner, Ken Griffin and the Pritzkers will send you a different toadie every 8 years who is only loyal to them.

Think about it. The stooge needs corporate money to get elected to his two terms and he needs a job after it's over. If he bucks the system, he'll be black-balled for life. If he follows orders, he can look forward to a reward in the private sector from his masters.

Don't fall for this one.

I live in Schaumburg and there was a group getting signatures for term limits and the guy had a hard time getting anyone to sign the petition except me. He couldn't believe how disinterested Schaumburg was, but it's now the typical uniformed uncaring suburb that tends to vote Democrat.

How it works.

You raise the min wage and then when inflation soars you under report the inflation and keep the difference.

By under reporting inflation all those entitlement programs like social security for example get shafted.

Union contracts with annual wage and pension increases tied to CPI get shafted too.

Inflation goes up by let's say ten percent and you put out a report that says inflation had only increased by 5%. Your tax revenue income increases and the political apparatus gets to keep the difference.

The minimum wage issue certainly has its share of supporters on both sides of the issue. I am for an increase in the federal minimum wage, ,maybe to 9 or 10 dollars. I don't think that if Illinois raises their wage it will drive jobs out of the state, but if the wage goes too high, jobs will be lost to automation. I am a conservative and I am for a minimum wage of 10 bucks an hour.

Will someone please -- PLEASE -- slap Madigan upside his Stoo-pid fucking head, a $10.00 dollar an hour minimum wage will spell the end of Illinois. In no time the entire state will be one big goddamn Ghost Town, every city, town, and village looking like THESE Places (and yes!...they are all in the good old USA! And no, they're not old mining boomtowns from the 1880's).

The reason is simple. That $10.00/hr versus the $8.25/hr is not merely $1.75 an hour more, nope, that $10 bucks represents a 21.21% Raise! And if that raise became law how long does anyone think it will take before EVERY WORKER demands the fucking raise....how about immediately. I know I sure as hell would if I was still working and not retired, and you can bet the fricken rent that Organized Labor will too. Not only will they do that but they'll also demand that raise NOW!...contracts be damned, 'Pay Us Now or We Strike!' And I wouldn't blame them.

So first of all will have disruptions due to strikes. Then we'll have companies going belly up because they can't pay the 21% raises which will put folks out of work and on welfare. All companies will increase their sale prices by 21% which many won't be able to afford. Then the lucky ones, like construction trades will be spending their raise on goodies, but that will create inflation, driving the economy in IL further in the fucking dump.

Oh, then the Fast Food workers and Low Information DummycRats who pushed this $10.00/hr bullshit will be right back at the bottom where they fucking started!! Except now they'll be flipping burgers in a goddamn Ghost Town.

Good going assholes. Enjoy your $10.00 dollars a fucking hour.

The grass is always greener. Term limits seem like a great idea, but they have their own negative effects. Legislators spend their few terms focusing on their next term-limited job, and never accrue the experience and connections to do their current job well. The party, and its contributors, become more important than the actual politician. Politicians also realize they only need to win 1 reelection, so they care less about if the electorate agrees with them after their second win. If we do term limits, we should consider 3-5 terms instead of the usual 2 that have caused these problems in other states. The idea definitely deserves more thought than the reflexive "hell yeah" we all feel.

Term limits wont get rid of career politicians, just the faces will change more often and they will have less accountability and more pressure to screw us as much as possible during their limited run.
