More SOS Fallout?

Scandals never die in Chicago - they go through seven acts and half-a-dozen encores:
  • Last week, a federal jury took the unusual step of ordering the five Chicago Police officers named in the lawsuit to pay $96,000 in punitive damages out of their own pockets. The verdict said the city must pay an additional $796,000 in compensatory damages. The judge previously found Padilla’s civil rights were violated.
Truthfully, the sentence should read "....four former and one current Chicago Police officer..." but Frank Main has never let the truth get in the way of a good jab.

Herrera's name pops up and he owes the lions' share at $50,500. That's a lot of used cars to sell. We have a sinking feeling that this scandal is going to be around as long as Burge.

Let us gloss over one sentence, rather than the heinous crime that took place under the badge of authority.

Or the fact that the cops that framed this guy got less time than people have for misdemeanor weed charges.

Yea that makes sense.

It's been awhile, but was SOS only Police Officers assigned without supervisors or command personnel?

Hey Herrera did you tell them you wore a wire! What the fuck can't a snitch bitch get a break! He'll, you flipped first and spilled your guts on 60 minutes to the world. They said I would pay the least in time and restitution pay. Man you just can't trust lawyers and news jag off anymore!

Maybe Keith can pay out of his income from teaching at the Academy on the subject of "Ethics". As I recall that was the job offer from Weiss. Did that job fall through?

+++++ 'a federal jury took the unusual step of ordering the five ... named in the lawsuit to pay $96,000 in punitive damages out of their own pockets. The verdict said the city must pay an additional $796,000 in compensatory damages. “I’m always going to be like that is not enough,” said Padilla, whose lawsuit sought $4 million. “Those nine months felt like a lifetime.” Padilla, 35, now ... sells tamales from a street stand. “I’m hoping I can get a food truck pretty soon,” he said. +++++

Keep on hoping Sparky, your $892,000 ($96K + $796) will soon be gone .....

Federal Income Tax (Highest Rate 39.6% (LOL)) off the top; $353,232
State Income tax off the to; $26,760
Attorney Fee of 1/3 off the top; $297,000
----------------------------------------------
amount left for that food truck; $215,008

Now we see why he wanted $4 Million. Like most who sue the po-leece and *win* he ain't gonna have shit left. And why you see, on occasion, stories about Ghetto Lottery winners going through two million bucks in a year or so. By the time they get the money all the vultures have fed -- off the top dollar amount -- and they're back in da hood in public housing.

Sheeeet!...Homes, money be gone (true dat).

Go away troll. Go back to Occupy Chicago on Facebook where if you criticize or take issue with their stance on anything, they bar you from making any more comments. Occupy Chicago; The freedom of speech site. Yeah, right!
All call! Anyone that reads this blog and has access to a Facebook account should visit the Occupy Chicago site, get a good laugh at their programs and then rip them another asshole. See how quickly they embrace your free speech.

So Herrera has to pay over $50K out of his own pocket!?!? Better get another 20/20 segment on CBS.. This time maybe they can pay him and then he can pay the victim.

Their clout heavy supervisors should chip in on the punitive damages. We all know they knew what was going on and reaped from the benefits. Like harley Davidson motorcycles for presents...the cpd what a joke!

You must be high or a defense lawyer or both. Nobody gets time here for misdemeanor weed charges.

Nobody is proud of the SOS scandal, just tired of getting brow beat over it constantly.

What they did was wrong. My guess is that the sentencing all around for the allegations wasn't as much as one would think because the victim wasn't quite as innocent as portrayed in media.

The one lawyer in the article said the Cubs have a better chance of winning the World Series than a cop getting disciplined. I'd say the Cubs have a better chance of winning the World Series back-to-back before a lawyer gets disciplined for any of the crap and lies they pull in court.

Scared of his own shadow. Has anyone heard him speak a word ?
Gets made chief after doing zero anywhere he went.

(OT) to the coppers calling out other coppers working various special employment initiatives let me say this, and this is not bragging reality. Been on this job 29 years going to retire early next year, been married 33 years, both my kids went to college 1 to Notre dame the other to Yale, both graduated and got great jobs, both attended st ignatius high school, we are happily married still.

Now to the coppers talking nonsense, I worked Cta and movies and part time jobs, now I do none of it, leave it for the new coppers that need the money for their families, obviously greed is not my motive, believe it's time to pass the torch to others in blue. My deferred comp is healthy, I paid off my kids college (got some scholarship money) the way it was done was to hustle, this job, these coppers I work and worked with are all like family to me. The management really needs a major overhaul but that is something we cannot change. If your the copper begrudging other coppers who work overtime incentives your wrong, you want your family together at night when your done working don't go to the bars, or hunting other lovers you go home to be with the family.

Lastly whoever runs this blog needs a huge thanks for all he/she/them have done for all of us, and also to bring light to the darkness this city tries to keep the residents in. The news media gets lots of info from the blog it's true as investigative reporting is a dying are except for Ben javorsky at the reader, who is obviously not bought off by rahms crew! May God bless all of us and you young coppers your first duty is to raise your family and that takes being there and cash, take care of yourselves workout, eat well, tell your family you love them thanks for being there for me!

To the guy posting about the final paymemt to victim your wrong. On federal suits there's no taxes paid on a verdict. 2nd the attorney's fees do not come out of the verdict. The attorney's negotiate a fee w city during a hearing with the judge. You've obviously never have been sued.

In 28 years I have never seen anyone get jail time for small amounts of weed, misdemeanor. No one. Ever. Not here.

Maybe in Texas in 1962 but never here in the past 20-30 years or so.

Dear Anonymous,
Honestly, everything you posted I thought about before I hit 'Publish Your Comment'. I probably should have added a caveat/clarification in a postscript, that's neither here nor there now.

And here's the thing; in certain Civil Rights cases like say the ACLU suing some government entity over Prayer in __________(fill in blank), the Bible, or Ten Commandments, the FedGov does reimburse the ACLU for their attorney fees but compensation there doesn't involve money being awarded so that's moot, so would all taxes.

However, what I was thinking of was a specific case of maybe 7-10 years ago. A case against Chicago Police Officers, the Police Dept, and the City of Chi. It was for Brutality and it was in the MSM for a while, it was a 'hot story', headline sh-t at the time. The *typical* mother suing about 'police beating her son' -- and she won -- the award was approx Two Million Dollars as I recall(ed).

But then there was a follow-up story two years later. The family, Mom & Son, were now broke, all the money was gone, they were right back in 'da hood' (West Side) were they started. And she went into detail of were the money went, they didn't blow it on bullshit, she just wanted a Middle Class lifestyle and spent accordingly: a nice but not big house in a South suburb (Park Forest?), a new car -- not a Caddy / Benz / BMW/ or like that -- a 'normal' new car. And tuition for her son at a good high school. But she said what surprised her was; 1) all the TAXES she had to pay and 2) Lawyer Fees. Those were all off her total award amount.

Add the new house payments & RE taxes, new furniture, car payments and insurance then BINGO, it was all gone. Thing is she didn't or couldn't work or her pay was shitty, so her & son had zero income, only outflow of cash. And in two years that was that, back on the West Side of Chicago. That woman & her son is what I was thinking as typed.Maybe we're both right, that it depends on who-what's being sued, over 'which' civil right?

In any case have a nice day.
[Oh, and yeah, I've never been sued. And I plan on keeping it that way.]
