Inside Job?

  • Burglars smashed windows of a West Side elementary school and nabbed 141 iPads valued at more than $70,000 early on Memorial Day.

It happened just before 1 a.m. at Charles Hughes Elementary School in the 4200 block of West 15th in North Lawndale, according to police.

Police were told at least two people shattered the glass of a window on the south side of the building. Police found another shattered window in a second-story room with safes strewn about, according to a police report.
"...safes"? As in multiple safes? And a pallet of unattended iPads? Something fishy here - where were the motion detector alarms that are always going off when a large cockroach runs down the hallway? And the remote cameras that CPS Security is always calling in when they can see the burglars running room to room? And these thieves had time to ransack multiple safes and spirit 141 boxes out a window?

I'm shocked - *shocked* that all of these were stolen. But hey, inside job?

The upside is that Apple is pretty good about locking stolen devices so these iPads are worthless since you can't activate them or use them. If I were the IT person, I'd get the list of serial numbers (on the waybill), call Apple, have them lock the devices. They'll find out who activated the iPads and you'll potentially get some good information to work towards an arrest.

Yes, possibly either an inside job, or inside information was provided. The big question, do elementary students really need iPads?

So does the City of Los Angeles.

Probably those gosh darn "urban youths" again. They are just so rambunctious. If anyone listened to zone 4 last night they would have heard that the boyfriend of a young couple was hospitalized after getting the shit beat out of him at Van Buren and State by a couple "urban" youths. That multiple car and store windows on North Michigan Ave were smashed by "urban youths". That there was a massive fight between "urban youths" on the Red Line platform at State and Lake that shut down the line. That there were multiple thefts of purses, laptops, phones, etc. by groups of "urban youths" celebrating the holiday. Golly gee, those "urban youths" sure know how to have fun. Rahm, you've done a wonderful job of making the downtown area so family friendly and inviting. I can't wait to bring my friends and family down to experience the great urban culture that is Chicago!

Wtf is wrong with these people? iPad is your sole incentive for school? CPS gas insurance so they'll get new iPads. But good riddance to any leeches on society that need an iPad to get them into class. I'm sure she will go get a job instead. Lol.

What was the story a year or two ago about this? Untold numbers of electronic equipment stored unguarded and without alarm systems at CPS schools and CPS had no record of serial numbers or what exactly the had stored in the buildings. Just like Apples dangling from a tree waiting to be picked. What took so long, of course, they've probably been getting ripped off steadily for awhile.

Why didn't the people(s) who paid for the ipads hire security to watch them and then a guard to be with the student it would be assigned to? After all you cannot expect the system to do all that!
By the way, any openings for CPS security or janitorial spots, I need some electronics.

Yea thats a great way to spend our tax dollars. Hire off duty police for 16 hrs a day,7 days a week and on holidays at each public school.
If it worked and the 70K of computers were not stolen,it would only come to a cost of what 95 million Figured out $25 an hr times 16 hrs a day at 658 CPS schools. Thats a cost savings measure

This happens every other day, it's just not reported in the news.

As far as the schools Rahmbolina closed, they've all been gutted of their metals and anything else that can be scrapped. If Rahm says those buildings will be re-used, it would cost at least $250K to put them back together (each). It's open season, scrappers coming in and out with whatever they can grab.

They steal the cameras and alarms first...then keep coming back.

The safes are probably the rolling locked carts the ipads are stored in/charged in at the school. Most schools with iPads use that method of storage if the kids are not taking them home every day. Sad that sometimes it is not an inequailty of resources at CPS but a pack of cuzzins who hold the students back.

I would like to see the theft statistics in CPS since the janitorial services were privatized. The private janitorial serves are responsible for running the "background checks' because the employees are not "employed" by CPS but by the private company. Theft is huge issue in CPS and employees, especially non-tenured teachers are encouraged NOT to report it.

Beat 1070 says enough with the talk. Now is the time for action. 1070 will roll up his sleeves and go to work. This is a daunting task. As the senor Sgt, he will be assisted by Bt 1020 who has logged a good portion of her career working with computers at 35th St. 1020 will be assigned a lesser yet significant role.

What the heck is going on in the Marquette District. Wasn’t the old Penn school on 16th & Springfield a similar major case with hundreds of I-PADS stolen during the winter months. No wonder why 1070 rolls these day under different supervisory beat designations. Sgt R.F. formerly beat 1070 says talk is cheap and he will personally lead this investigation to a prosecutorial conclusion. Bt 1070 has vowed to bring justice to these bandits and parade them down the halls of the 10th District headquarters with their handcuffs and leg irons clinking just like the old school chain gangs. This is a major source of embarrassment since the Hughes school has several noted safe passage trails.

The thieves also made out with hundreds of textbooks and the accompanying workbooks. The thieves are getting smarter. Safecrackers? Proof positive that the public schools are doing a better job at educating the youth one lesson at a time. No doubt advanced math played a role in cracking the safe codes.

No doubt it's an inside job. The thieves didn't just make a lucky guess those iPads were sitting there, someone tipped them off. But this is the part of the article that got my attention: ...........
--> 'The school’s assistant principal told police 141 iPads valued at $70,500 had been stolen.' <--

Now I don't know who does the purchasing at CPS, it's irrelevant. But that info from the Asst Principal tells one all you need to know why the CPS is goddamn broke!!

Some asshole at CPS or the school paid $500 a fucking piece for the iPads -- which is OVER the fucking RETAIL price!! Best Buy is selling these: 'Apple - iPad 2 with Wi-Fi - 16GB - White: $399.99. That's brand fucking NEW to anyone who walks in off the street.

So whatever asshole paid $500.00 fucking dollars each for a BULK PURCHASE should be in fucking jail! (Dammit to hell, fuck them!)

After a well deserved 3 day holiday weekend, the social media investigative team in a joint investigation with the prima donna intelligence teams will initiate a sting operation. The ruse is simple. Homework assignments will be sent to each i-Pad. As soon as the student logs in with their personal log identification string, its probable cause for arrest time. Department notices have alerted central detention of an impending large scale sting mass arrest operation in progress. Information technology strike teams have been assembled covertly under a cloak of secrecy in operation “Road Apples”. They gonna get the job right getting the dirty little paperwork done right and wipe these asses clean of the streets.

"Gibs us more of y'all tax money an' shit or we gonna be mad an' shit..."

Hard-Head, willfully ignorant, mind-locked, death worshipping m/fers that Rahm & Co. panders to as a lever to pry hard earned money from what's left of Chicago's middle class.

Rahm also wants them in place as a firewall against the middle class taking their city back... At least until Rahm is done looting the muni treasury and flounces away to a fat "consulting" gig or national office.

Can't get m/fers to go to school and make something of themselves but they'll break in and steal equipment and deprive some kid who really wants to give it a go.

If they can't fuck it,
eat it, write on it, piss at it
or shit in it; they break it or steal it.
Then turn around and demand more of it...

Fuck us and our reasonable demand for
full funding of our pension?

Yes! for sitting around some collect ssi link cell phone and housing.

And if its going to benefit cops? Yes! If the non working can drain this city and state, so can the workers who legitimately make a living.

Cost savings measure? Or pension? Or contract? Is that a cost saving measure?

Correct.
They, the overpaid, summers-off, holidays-off, christmas vacation-off, spring break-off teachers-gave up on trying to teach "them" how to simply write the alphabet with a pencil. Probably be stabbing each other...
Hence, the i-Pad.
But YOU, you probably pay scrape and save for your childrens tuition and support your school and Parish, in doing so-just so Rahm can't close that school down!
YOU, you also make you children a PB&J sandwich-when other than in grammar school did they ever taste so good?

Can't you just wait 'till they're old enough to come on the job?

(Now why would I think Rambo perhaps has visions, for down-the-road and politically inspired to friends, of course-real estate deals on the properties of those shuttered schools?)
