Wait...We Worked....for Free?

  • It has come to [the FOPS's] attention that members who worked the Chicago Park District Overtime Initiative were not properly compensated for dates worked during the month of April. The Lodge is aware of the problem and is actively working with the Department and the City of Chicago to rectify this issue as quickly as possible. We will post an update to the website once there is any type of resolution to this unfortunate situation. In the meantime, we ask you to retain record of any and all dates/times you have worked this program.
And the resolution appears to be, "We're sorry, it'll never happen again. We pinky swear!"
  • The Chicago Police Department contacted the Lodge this morning to notify us that the Officers that were not compensated for the Chicago Park District Overtime initiative can expect to be paid on 22 June 2014. We at the Lodge understand the frustration this has caused our membership and have already begun a dialogue with the City to ensure this unacceptable oversight will not occur again.
So everyone will be paid a month late. Great.

Now how about sanctions against the City for fucking up? Some sort of penalty so they remember the importance of paying people on time. Because we all know what would happen it one of us "forgot" to pay a ticket or sent in a rubber-check for a water bill. We'd be looking at a bit of time to catch up on yard work on no-pay status. But the City can fuck us with impunity and suffer no consequences? Hello FOP??

Here's a bright idea - demand double pay for everyone who missed a check. Or better yet, have the FOP declare no members can work VRI until the City make whole the missed checks. It's not a job action because this is voluntary special employment. Someone works it anyway, expel them from the Lodge. No one working VRI for a week and the CompStat computers might just explode along with Rahm's head.

There's only an order and ordinance on indebtedness TO the city. So they do what they want. Try being late on water bill or parking fines.

I called volunteering and is highly thought off. Now if each officer would just volunteer 8 free hours a week it would save the city a large amount of loot over the years. BTW Barrack Obama himself recommends and promotes volunteering.

I had CHA south and north both miss a payment in the past. Special Employment said it was because the watch commander must have forgot to mark me as worked. I had to call the watch commander of 005 and 018 to make sure they marked it as worked. We are basically on our own in this matter make sure they mark you as worked or you will be short changed one month. I was paid on both occasions the following month but it was frustrating.

This should not surprise anyone. The new Sgts were cheated out of CAPS day by the city (a grievance was filed and they will get the time they should have earned). Some of the new Sgts still haven't received their pay increase (the city says the Sgts who didn't receive their raise will get they pay missed on June 1st). The city will do anything and everything to cheat the Police.

Meanwhile as a new Sgt I have had to SPAR multiple officers for indebtedness to the city. The officers I had to SPAR all paid their bills. They just paid late. The Officers have to prove they paid to the city.

The city is a tyrant!!!

No one can expect immediate results from the city. In the last 6 years under Mike, FOP lost power and prestige. Now Dean is consumed with damage control, negotiating the contract and fighting other battles. I bet Dean will not miss very crucial deadlines for letters that cost the membership thousands of dollars.

There REALLY needs to be concerted and concentrated push-back from FOP against the city...

Violating the contract with impunity.

Yet FOP is wholly devoted to "taking the high road" and not hitting the city back.

Hey FOP!
Whose interest are you looking after?
Our's or the city's?

This "gentleman" strategy over the last 25+ years is a fail!

Your performance in advancing The Patrolman's cause and informing the public that our cares and concerns are their cares and concerns as well due to the captive nature of our employment, has been woefully and intentionally inadequate.

Why so reluctant for so long to fight hard for us?

Why isn't the city being crucified for maintaining Polkce facilities that have been known and notorious cancer clusters for the last 40+ years? What's wrong in Chicago that everybody but Policemen can have the expectation of a workplace where you don't hear about so many people battling cancer and ghastly upper respiratory ailments?

What about the sorry and dangerous fleet of vehicles we're compelled to drive?

The taxi industry has better maintained vehicles, for crying out loud!

Why aren't there teams of FOP members or trusted affiliates devoted to an ongoing counter-intelligence program to gather damaging/damning information on politicians and media members who use their standing to intentionally separate The Police from the good will of the public? Why is there such a big problem in Chicago with Policemen "fighting back?"

We had a REAL Captain of Police tell us some good stuff many years ago during the half hour before our very first roll call as a Chicago Policeman...

"I expect you to BE THE POLICE... I expect you to be fair to these people and to be professional... HOWEVER... I DON'T expect you or any of my Officers to be anybody's punching bag. You take care of business to make sure The Police go home in one piece and motherfuck anybody that doesn't like it. You have me, some good Lieutenants, good Sergeants and some of the best Officers in the city to help you..."

FOP...
Time to REALLY consider where your loyalties truly lie.

25+ years of doing "just enough"to prop up your talking point of "well, you guys coulda got much less without US" is BULLSHIT!

Uncurl yourselves from the fetal position at the feet of a malignant, misshapen, missing a digit less than a man who has never had to fight for a damned thing in his sad, sorry and stunted life and FIGHT HIM AND HiS KIND BACK!

We aren't ante-bellum slaves singing joyful work songs and content to wait on dying and going to a "Heaven" of THEIR design to reap a reward of THEIR choosing (which would be nothing) just because we wear Blue Suits with a Star pinned to our blouse.

Stand up! Fight back!
Represent US!

Or gracefully step aside and recuse yourselves for people who will...

Show us that the FOP isn't a rest home for those beholden to contrary interests.

Mike was a tool and should have never been elected, but he was in there less than three years. The "new fop" isn't new. Dean was in as a field rep under Bill Nolan. He gave us the health insurance we have today and took the company card to Hooters. All on our dime. The damage control was the letter and I believe that will work itself out in the end. But Dean has shown me so far that all he is doing is wasting money. Someone must ask to see how much the new law firm is costing us. . Between that and him taking care of his buddies Bill Nolan and John Dineen at $600 per month. Its going to hurt.

There also has to be punishment and penalties on exempts that openly violate the contract. I'm not saying in misunderstandings or different interpretations of the contract, but in outright violations, where damage is done and a year or two the po gets he should have had before the grievance.

Problems paying people at the correct rate and the correct amount are not unique to the Chicago PD.

Fixing it after the fact is often a non-trivial thing, as the pay period has been closed out accounting wise so the normal means of paying people is no longer available.

One would think that organizations that run into this problem periodically would come up with some way to deal with it, but for whatever reason they tend not to.
