Some People Just Don't Get It

Touching on a few of the comments left in the "Wait...We Worked...For Free?" post yesterday:
  • We're routinely deleting the nonsense about "scabs" and "VRI whores" now. We've explained the definition of scab, and very few people are in any position to dictate how/why people spend their days off working extra - the opportunity is there, do what you will.
Then we have a few like these:
  • Expel them from the union? You're nuts.

  • Yeah SCC... Let me give up $300 to "punish" the city... And then get dumped by the FOP? Does that mean I get to keep my dues? Win/Win
Well. let's see - you've already given up the $300 to the city. They aren't paying you for 30 days. What if the next fuck-up is remedied in 60 days? 90 days? When is enough enough? When does the city live by the rules that you are expected to follow without fail? Remember, if you fail, you have to pay with comp time or a suspension, and in very short order.

As to the expulsion threat, how would you do it? This department has become splintered. It's been said here for years - no one sticks together. Everyone has their own interests, we get that. However, when something like this comes up, something that the city could use (is using?) in a less than benevolent manner to fuck with people, there has to be a line drawn somewhere. This is the perfect opportunity to draw that line and get everyone on board. How else do you enforce "party discipline" on the rank-and-file? The only thing stopping us is us, so why not force the issue?

Fortunately, I don't live paycheck to paycheck, so 30 days is no big deal... Secondly, if the FOP or you SCC can find me a better paying gig than $55 an hour to be a "seated scarecrow", let me know and I'll sign up to teach the city a lesson... Until then, NO THANKS...

I think it pertains to the people with less time on the job that are fed up of not having a chance to grab a piece of the wealth that overtime can't provide to those with less senority or those that can not get activity in units and are skipped upon for that reason and have to wait for some "BS" supplemental. I feel that these are the people being upset about this whole vri whore shit. Can't blame them either earning senority is one thing but being the same senority people getting all the overtime available is another and should be spread all little bit better throughout the department to share. That's how I look at it! Just voicing my opinion. Those who say well I earned it, just remember when your in need of help, that those same guys or girls with less senority will be the ones to help you weather you've earned it or not. So, what im saying learn how to look out for each other as well and not just ME...ME....ME...attitude. these overtime programs do segregate all of us in a way.

Worried about $300 dollars?

Yet we wonder how many of you give the Federal and state government free use of your money by using the income tax system as a means of a forced savings plan.

I'll bet that for the ones that do the dollar figure is well north of $300 dollars too.

You know, let them take out more income taxes than you really owe so that you can have a tax refund at the end of the year.

Too lazy or perhaps ignorant to file a new W-4 withholding form to adjust your tax deductions appropriately.

What makes you think that you're gonna get you income tax refunds in a timely manner IF AT ALL.

These people are BANKRUPT. You don't allow people that have shown they are unwilling or unable to handle money hold your money. ARE YOU NUTS!

Look at what they've done with
the pension money.

2013 and 2014 vri will cost the city around 200 million dollars--- if it was pensionable it would have added roughly 20 million to the pension fund--- this is a drop in the bucket to the estimated 9 billion unfunded liability the police pension is currently faced with--- the city's operating budget is around 3 billion a year--- taken in context, we have bigger things to worry about than chastising a couple hundred guys a day who work vri....

Divide and conquer has worked for Mayor Emmanuel and Superintendent McCarthy so far.

Don O'Neil in Management and Labor Affairs routinely violates the contract at the expense of officers. This is done at the Mayor's bidding also. If the copper catches it and grieves, they are only made whole. There is never a penalty so why wouldn't the City do it?

Don O'Neil, you should be ashamed for your part in this.

So..anyways,

Hey, how about a social media #hashtag event with a

#GiveUsOurPensionMoneyThatYouPromised tag.

or perhaps a

#PayUsOurOvertimeWeEarned tag

Think you'll see any politicians wives with selfies with a sad and sour look on their faces to win the "hearts and minds." while holding up that sign? I doubt it.

However, if we all use our kids and families to hold-up the hand written #hashtag cards we can control the election time message.

Madigan, Burke, Rahm and all the rest may be able to play their dirty tricks and evil schemes. Evil things like keeping new rules on term limits off the election ballots.

BUT THEY CANNOT KEEP THEM OFF SOCIAL MEDIA..AT LEAST NOT YET.

Pay us what you promised. It's for our children.

True, we need to stick together and stop bashing each other. Lets stop the name calling and finger pointing. Yes, there are people who rely on VRI special. A failed school system requires private education which costs money. Property taxes are generated in excess of truly working class areas. For those who don’t pay and refuse to pay their utilities, their medical expenses and pay any of their bills, an added “recovery” cost is factored in to be paid by the working class who actually pay everyone else’s freight. Why does an aspirin cost $30 at the E.R.? You pay for all those who received free treatment. Some one must bear the cost of the freebees. Saul Alinsky, the crown jewel of the radicals, would be proud we are divided by the ruling class. Divide and then conquer. Lets focus on the real enemies of the working class and not each other. If the city ws only as good as collecting money as it is paying its bills...

It's not like the days before the union when your days off could be switched right before your weekends or when all your time due was wiped away or when you worked overtime for straight time etc etc. At that time we came together now everyone is out for themselves. Previous posts mention how the city gets away with breaking the contract and breaking State and Federal laws well maybe a time has come where the police and it's union should break the contract, State and Federal laws. Think of Chicago in July and August with little or no police on regular shifts or VRI. You can still keep your Harley, boat, summer home, house and catholic tuitions along with your dignity, pride and the set of balls you were born with if you show some resistance just enough to wake people up.

Agree with scc 100% on this one. Nothing happens with consequences of the cities actions of lack of police hiring until the fop membership sticks together and basically ties the cities hands together on this issue. Because a few hundred bucks is being waved in front of us, we are used as puppets and the city can get away with not hiring a 1,000 + cops. Bills, bills, bills. Believe it or not there is more to life than this job. Enjoy your alone time or enjoy your family. Don't let this city rob you of your life and health. You and your family come first. Or as predicted take the check and spend it the day you cash it but don't complain when you can't get time due for an important life event or why no one can back you up on a job because the manpower is depleted indefinitely

Having waited my turn seniority wise, I have little sympathy for junior officers not getting OT, special, VRI, or decent "spots."

Myself, I work CHA a few times a month and that's it. The funny thing is, with almost 28 years on I can not regularly get the 14:00 hr start time I prefer for CHA Central...that's the way it is and has been and I don't cry about it.

It wasn't too long ago that all of the Special Employment was strictly seniority, ie. if you had the seniority you got all the days you wanted. That system made everyone need more time-on to get Special. So the city has spread the wealth...a little.

Looking out for each other went out the door when we stopped rotating watches.

To the junior guys, find some off the book side-jobs, which was the norm 25 years ago, and before you know it you'll have the time for Special.

I have always worked side jobs or special and still found time to spend with wife, kids & maintain great friendships with guys I met on the job and lifelong buddies. I've coached my kids and still volunteer at their (Catholic) schools. Been married twenty years and no complaints. Great wife and great kids. I do work alot but that's ok. Never too tired to spend quality time with the family or go out and watch a game with the fellas while throwing back a few cold ones. Have fun, provide for the family, period that's it. Kids need things and so do we to keep our sanity and things aren't cheap. Make your time and a half or whatever, save as well but most of all enjoy life with your family and friends. What's the worst thing she can do?
Get mad and leave you?

Pretty sad when your wife is fighting against you.

You might be yet another copper who gets "blindsided" with divorce papers and back-breaking alimony demands right when you start thinking retirement.

Easy there killer. I have no PMI. I have equity in my house. I refinanced my house when the rates were incredibly low. My cars are paid off, except for my sport car that I drive to the car wash once in a while. I am enrolled in a respectable graduate program and I am taking advantage of the Tuition Reimbursement program. So, I agree; people have to work smarter. I have not worked a day of VRI.
