Jesus Christ was the model for "servant leadership." He gave his life in service to others as a voluntary servant. He dedicated himself to a higher purpose - as a leader who used the power entrusted to him to serve God by serving mankind beyond his own personal interests.
This is the model for the soldier and anyone else in public service who puts service to others above self.
It is the highest calling - when we serve others, we serve God. No other life is as fulfilling, or as meaningful.
Drove into Chicago yesterday and went to dinner and then on to Buckingham fountain for the evening light show. Had the granddaughter and one of her little friends with us.
The light/fountain display was great and was accompanied by patriotic music. Large building to the north had "some gave all" spelled out in it's window lights. Nice.
Yes, I packed heat, after all, ya never know...?
Two things of note. No packs of savages of any breed and,interestingly enough, never saw one uniformed copper.
Was glad on the 1st note and perplexed by the second one though it made it a little less troublesome for me to enjoy the one beer I also packed for the trip.
Anyways, yes you can still enjoy what Chicago has to offer, just be prepared, and no, you don't have to live there when you retire.
Enjoy today and take a moment to silently honor those who served for this great country.

Let us never allow the memory of ALL fallen members of the Armed Forces be forgotten ever.
Than you, Dad-Ed(NAVY), sister-Lynne(NAVY), brother-in-law-Joe(NAVY)Grandfather-Nicholas (Marines), Grandfather-Roland Sr(NAVY), Uncles Roland Jr(NAVY), Bob(NAVY), Pete(NAVY),and Ray(ARMY). And of course, Ben(NAVY-my Veteran I had the priviledge of taking care of along with Dad on HonorFlightChicago to Washington D.C.
And to all other United States Veterans who served in war and peacetime-thank you for your dedication and service. I am so proud of each and everyone of you!

I salute and pray for my fallen brothers in arms but I will never forget or forgive the American people for the way we the Vietnam era vets were treated and are still being treated by the VA. Welcome Home to all my fellow veterans.

God Bless all vets, and my Uncle Ed who marched across Europe with Gen Patton's army, infantry attached to a tank unit. He was badly wounded in Belgium, Dec 1944. Never complained, never talked about it until many years later. His squad was all killed except for him, he was left for dead and found by soldiers moving bodies. Good man.
God Bless my friend John, who went to Vietnam, Republic of at age 19 and came back in a flag draped coffin.
And my stepmother, US Navy nurse in 1941, took care of Pearl Harbor casualties in a Navy hospital in Texas. Navy veteran.
Be grateful all for what they did.

I always put in a thought for the War Workers -- as the Depression lifted, Mom found work at Stevens Arms, inspecting 1917 Enfield parts for Lend-Lease to Britain. $70.00 a week was good money then.
Young gal in her overalls with the employee badge, and her clumsy new work boots -- she slipped and fell on an oily steel factory stairway and fractured her coccyx.
It bothered her until the day she died at age 90, God rest her soul.
They also served who ran lathes or drive rivets or poured steel -- all part of the "Greatest Generation."
Once a soldier, always a soldier........

Our parents at home that worked at home to win the war were hero' also. Their generation was the best the great USA ever seen.
May they all rest easy now with all of those who gave their all protecting our great nation. Amen.
Today I wrote my Congressman to complain about the deplorable lack of appropriate care for our men and women in uniform and veterans. Both parties are to blame for decades of neglect. As a veteran, I ask all of you if you are too busy to do the same? Is it too much to ask you to do for all that has been sacrificed for our freedoms -- YOUR freedoms?

Yes, by all means, limit your respect to only one day a year for each. (sarcasm, for those of you who don't recognize it)
Or maybe we could ALL expand our horizons and show honor and respect to both the fallen and those who have 'only' served, to EVERY day. Each and every day.
I hate the parades, the politicians and the holiday sales. Too many names of the fallen during the GWOT including my Plt SGT, a fellow cop, a great father and person who died in Afghanistan. They gave their lives to keep us free. You will never be forgotten. Very sad day

Any day that people remember what a sacrifice others made living and dead is a good day. Lighten up and cut some slack! You can remember on Veteran's day too.

God bless my grandfather who fought in WWI Europe, and earned a purple heart. As an immigrant from Ireland, he was able to gain US Citizenship. I'm so grateful to him and all others who made the ultimate sacrifice. God bless.
