Hydrants for Scrap

  • Two Chicago men face felony charges after they were caught trying to steal fire hydrants Saturday morning in the Gresham neighborhood, prosecutors said today.

Ned D. Carradine, 50, and Russell L. Mack, 51, each face criminal damage to government property and theft of government property charges in connection to the incident, which took place in the 8500 block of South Loomis Boulevard, according to Cook County court records.

Police responded to a theft in progress call and found Carradine, a South Shore resident, and Mack, of Longwood Manor, in the process of attempting to put one of the hydrants in a vehicle, according to court records.

The two already had “unauthorized control” of a second hydrants, court records state.
Scrap iron goes for about $0.08 per pound, meaning a typical 500 pound hydrant (that retails for about $2,000) will get you $45 tops, if you can find a yard that will take an obviously stolen piece of city equipment.

Desperate people will do desperate things. They probably had sick wives that needed medicine. Society must provide a safety net for these poor unfortunates.

"Two Chicago men face felony charges after they were caught trying to steal fire hydrants Saturday morning..."

Seemed like a good idea at the time...

"...if you can find a yard that will take an obviously stolen piece of city equipment..."

Take it over to the omnivores who shredded a dozen bright yellow school buses.

Considering that ALL the scrap yards are mobbed up, what are the chances that they'll take this stuff for cash, and cut it up 30 seconds later... better than 99.999%?

Geez, I thought the scrappers on the west side were bad! They'd crawl into the anal cavity of a corpse if they thought there was any copper/metal in there!

So many years ago when I was sent to 011as a rookie, I was told my very first day what to expect from the shitheads...
If you can't fuck it..
steal it,
eat it,
then destroy it.

no truer words were ever spoken to sum up the ghetto.

You can find a yard on the south side that will take a car with a dead body in it, like Pulp Fiction.

Fuck these crooked scrap yards that are unwilling to ask questions to a couple of mopes that show up with 15 perfectly good catalytic converters they just cut from cars. Like a previous poster said, you know these yards are juiced up because not a person never investigates the yards, and a thing never happens to them.

I think that this comment is correct. In the past, a statute from the Columbian Exposition relocated to a West side park disappeared and it was speculated that it was sold for scrap. I also remember that a dedication plaque for the Lawrence Avenue bridge spanning the North branch of the Chicago River (dedicated by "Big Bill the Builder" Thompson
in 1915) was pried loose over a period of weeks by a scavenger. Shortshanks later had the bridge resurfaced and he had a plaque with his name affixed to the same bridge.

Fire plug lamps are all the rage in Boys Town. You can fetch a good dollar for stolen fire plugs to be turned into lighting fixtures. Worth a lot more than scrap metal.

Ever wonder who is involved in the lucrative scrap game? Shockingly, even Mexican drug cartels are in this game forming business relationships with none other than the Red Chinese. Big money and gives them cover moving large sums of money worldwide. Gives the cartels legitimacy. The cartels are also into mining iron ore in Mexico illegally then forwarding the ore to China.

If the communists were plotting to destroy America from within, they would unleash these two individuals and many more like them. Our factory buildings, unoccupied structures and now even hydrants are stripped clean by these human locusts beyond repair. The cost of their continuing enterprise scrap crime sprees is enormous.

Where does this scrap go? It sold on the world market primarily to China providing much needed raw materials making them the new industrial giant of the world. In the meantime, these idiots are destroying everything in their path dismantling our factories and our infrastructure in accordance with the wishes of those who seek a diminished economic status of our nation. Transferring our raw materials to China providing growth in their communist manufacturing economy while our nation has exponential food stamp growth.

Our nation was once a manufacturing powerhouse with a sizable middle class. Now its transformed to a loyal entitlement driven society in servitude to elected policy makers. Retail and service versus manufacturing. All that our Greatest Generation assembled to provide a better life for the upcoming generations is being destroyed right before our eyes. It may have just been a fire hydrant this time, but its certain they as a crime team have cause enormous economic damage each and everyday through any opportunity which they can hustle a scrap buck. And don’t forget, these goofs liberate anything they can get their hands on.

I lived in an industrial part of Boston years ago. I used to see fire hydrants lying on the sidewalks from time to time... they'd been hit by large trucks and knocked off their plumbing. I had a friend who dragged one into his loft space, although God only knows how he dragged it in there... it was as heavy as a mutha.

So the lesson here for the crooks is to first steal a truck... preferably one with a crane. Deliberately ram as many hydrants as you can, use the crane to lift the heavy hydrants into the back of the truck, then drive it to your friendly mobbed-up scrapyard for profit.

Although getting a job honestly sounds a whole lot easier!

Almost as funny as the two Shitheads who dug up a quarter block of alley just off Fifth & Francisco for the pavers about 15 years ago... The REALLY funny part was when they jumped in that raggedy Plymouth Reliant to make good their escape...

Small piece of shit front drive car + Half it's weight in Chicago Pavers in the trunk & back seat + Two logistically challenged idiots in the front seat = Comedy like a mofo as they were wondering how The Police just strolled up and yanked the driver from behind the wheel while the front tires were spinning like a mofo...

>An eye-watering slap upside the head from a large and annoyed yet amused cop<

SLAPPP! (bad kung-fu movie reverberation/echo included)

"If you want us to, we'll put 'em back Ossifer!"
(eyes watering - nose running)

Everybody in the notification chain laughed their asses off and even the dicks came down to look upside these stupid m/fers heads...

These hydrants have copper inserts inside which is far.more than the steel...so one hydrant is pretty good for 5 min worth of work...

So when their houses need a hydrant so the firemen can fight a fire...when then? they sue the city?

This is on a par with those who steal manhole covers.

I used to squat down, give the hydrant a major bear hug and rip them right out of the ground. Wore my police raincoat so I didn't get very wet. On a good night my partner and I could get half a dozen in the wagon. Those were the days!

Then they complain that it is only in minority communities that the City fails to immediately replace stolen fire hydrants. All the hydrants that are stolen in Lincoln Park or Sauganash are replaced so fast we hardly know they have been stolen.

Last fall, in 008 there was a new hydrant being installed in font of my house with new water mains. It lay on the parkway for 3 weeks. The punks(occupiers) that live next door tried to steal it twice. The dispatcher didn't believe me when I called and thought I was a mental.

They should start bolting with the meter boxes. It is like a slot machine with solar power.
Can be hauled away with a dollie.
Mr, Chung at the local scrap yard will reward you quite well.

The JO' caught messing with man hole covers and fire hydrants need to be scraped too. The can grease the crushers.
