More "Merit" Picks

The post a few down from this one was titled ' "Merit" Sgts - 2007 to Almost the Present' because it lacked the recent May 2014 class of sergeants.

This is the May 2014 list:

It's certainly interesting to see how former "merit" picks end up picking up the next generation of "merit" appointees.

Ok I've got to ask but how does Gorman get a merit pick for May when he retired months prior?! Does that mean my grampa who retired two decades ago can nominate me? And before any jerk off says it he retired with a shirt just as blue as mine!

I love it when the commander act like they are your friend.

They pat you on the shoulder and tell you to put in for a merit spot.
All the gullible s fill out resume and dust off their confirmation suits. They then have the fake interview with dumb ass question that are not relevant.

I think it is a smoke screen so nobody get sued the more apply the easier it is to say it a legit process.

Lucky my wife banks serious change in her line of work .

The funny thing about this post is this; in May 2014, I requested the same information via a Freedom of Information (FOI) request. To date, I have not received this information or any other communication from CPD. Now, your site posts a list with the same information that I was requesting two month ago. HMMM!

I'm not a big conspiracy person, but it seems like the FOI section at CPD is playing games with "sensitive" and "damaging" FOI requests. I just wonder how many FOI requests are discarded and ignored by CPD.

At a minimum, this would be an interesting FOI request for the news media types patrolling the blog, or even for the basis for an IAD investigation.

The fact that Stratton can pick a merit promotion hurts my head. I really didn't know how messed up the system was until I saw that she's a civilian; not a cop, never a cop etc., and has a role in our promotions. Never worked the street. Never made an arrest. Wow. I suppose maybe her name/pick is a front for someone at 35th, be it the Supt or other gold stars. I never really believed merit was so bad but now I'm starting to pay more attention especially since these lists are available. It's painful. Blue shirts do our jobs on the street for years, no hope of a merit spot. How can you live with being sponsored by a civilian for your promotion?

Wow guys, Bonner and McDonald are good people to have when your ghetto domestic turns into "get me a white shirt!, I want me a white shirt, get yo' commandaaah". I suppose we're all getting soft and scared with cameras, the media etc. When they stopped working, there was a reason. Heed the example. The lawsuits, numbers on you pile up. And then you do the minimum. With the promotion they'll be able to pass on the nuts and bolts of the job to the poor cops with less than 10 years.

Please understand I find this list, concept, and how The CPD actually works revolting. I'm not saying it makes me want to throw up. It's worse then that. Human greed and simple acknowledgement that every person of The CPD is of equal humanity. This clearly isn't true. We believe as an organization that when it comes to promotion there are certain "Police Royalty" names that R more deserving of a poor motion then U, the reader will ever be.
U'll hear my favorite line from "Police Royalty" when U walk into a domestic "I haven't been to a Domestic in 10 years." That's a real morale booster. He/She just crushed you cuz they know their jobs are better and for the most part U can't get them.
I'm averaging 3 to 4 domestics a 4 day. I know a lot of I average that or more. This is bullshit. Let's make this testing process one of more achievements as opposed to simply "juice." It's embarrassing.

The subject of Merit promotions has been a topic on this blog for years. When your new on the job, you are naive and think if you're competent and work hard, you will earn your way to a promotion.
After a few years of watching the new chosen ones walk onto tact teams, get promoted and transferred to the best units, get promoted again, and well you get it, you realize how corrupt the system really is.
Some people just give up and stop taking the exams, others continue to work hard and study hard only to be passed over again and again by those with clout and it really is a shame.
What bothers me even more is that some of these people actually become complete jerks and treat people, working coppers like complete garbage, they should in fact be humble and great full.
The Merit system is more than flawed, it is corrupt and broken. The only thing that may have any impact on it would be a lawsuit, that forces the city and department to define merit. Remove any and all police personnel from seeing the pre-test questions. Administering tests that are fair to all CPD personnel, require that all test participants take and pass part 1 and part 2 of the test. Require so many years of service needed to take any given promotional exam, etc.

This department is at a breaking point, this city is at a breaking point. Morale is worse then ever, why would officers want to stick their necks out when they have little chance at fair promotion. Merit is helping to destroy CPD, great job boys and girls.

Artiga wasn't well liked in 025? really? News to me. As one of his supervisors, I can tell you that he is one of the few that didn't cause us any problems. I never had any complaints about him. His numbers were always near the top of the watch during Evals. It saddens me to see one of your/our guys getting ripped because he got promoted. And if you think the commander is beholden to Pena, maybe you should put that bottle down.

Uhhhh...Nobody cares about Patrol. Nobody. You work hard so that you can look at yourself in the mirror every day. If you expect more than that, you're a fool who's not paying attention.

Houston has an objective test from a third party vendor. Scores are given out immediately, and a rank order is publicly published as soon as it is done. You must pass the written test and the third-party assessment, and both count for your final score. You can promote all the way up to captain off the tests (and is in fact the only way to promote).

It seems like a way better system.
