Trapped in Jail

  • A man who came to visit his son was accidentally trapped inside an empty maximum security visiting area of Cook County Jail for about 30 hours over the weekend, authorities said on Tuesday.

He was rescued when he broke a sprinkler head, alerting Chicago Fire Department firefighters who found him about 1 a.m. Monday, said Cara Smith, the jail's executive director.

“We’re tremendously sorry for what this man went through,’’ Smith said.
We're not. We're amused and concerned at the same time. How did he get trapped?
  • “He was told to proceed ahead and stay to the right to go to the visitor area,’’ Smith said. “He encountered a door that was propped open and he went in and the door shut behind him.’’

He was locked in the room, where people visit the “highest classification,’’ super-maximum security prisoners for 31 hours.
First up, isn't there some sort of sign-in / sign-out log at the jail? We would think that a jail is the kind of place where you try to keep track of how many people go in...and go out, during the course of a day. A simple count would have revealed the ingress exceeded the egress by one. That's a problem.

Second, who allows contractors to prop doors open in a fucking jail? Oh yeah.....Tom Dart. Never mind.

On the bright side, he probably served more time in County than most gun offenders seem to. Word through the grapevine is that he's trying to get the 31 hours credited to his son's sentence.

Just like the streets they're so short they have to run on "emergency numbers" So in the lobby there are more things to do in the same amount of time. But instead of rushing everything, counting would be easiest. And actually clearing the visiting cages.

Reading some of this stuff just makes you want to shake your head in total awe at the incompetance of Cook Co. But, it sort of explains our beloved president and his rule. His top advisers are from Chicago are they not?

C'mon SCC, we prop them open all the time - city can't afford 'pool' access cards for our visiting brothers in blue so, in goes the garbage can.....

Not as big of a problem as the other way around.

Breaking a sprinkler head is a good way to get a shower in while waiting.

Remember, Cook County jail policy is to keep people out, not keep people in. They do their best to deny intake of prisoners. That this even happened is no wonder. Their mentality is not to let prisoners in, in the first place, so this dummy was way below their radar anyway. Chances are this mutt belonged in jail for something else anyway, so it was just a matter of time before it caught up with him.

Somebody had to sign him out, or they would have been looking for him.

Just A Citizen says: Typical Bullshit. Blame EVERYONE ELSE. How about the idiot visitor who didn't follow the guard and decided to go his own way? Did everyone forget about the fact that idiots who are in jail were raised by idiots? Believe me, if I were visiting someone in jail (which I wouldn't since I don't know anyone in jail) I would stay very close behind the guard who is taking me somewhere. I wouldn't be wandering off on my own, stepping into a construction zone.
Furthermore, you ask why there wasn't a head count done? They can't count past ten.
What a bunch of effing morons.

I am sure there is. I am also reasonably certain that those in charge are the finest affirmative action hires the correctional facility could find.

Call me "cynical".

Where was the supervision? Who thought it was acceptable to just let the public walk down the hallway?

This is what happens when you promote morons.
