What About This Money Rahm?

  • Nine months after vowing to trash the perks, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s Department of Streets and Sanitation is still spending millions of dollars to provide free garbage collection to ineligible multi-unit residential buildings and to nonprofits whose garbage freebie was never authorized, the city’s inspector general concluded Wednesday.

Emanuel acknowledged that he hasn’t gotten around to making the change that Inspector General Joe Ferguson proposed last summer because he was too busy making even bigger changes to the way Chicago collects its garbage.
So, you're saying it isn't a "financial emergency?" That there's plenty of time to effect changes while you piss away millions?

Clout is a horrible thing to waste:
  • After any big snowfall, Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation announces when the city’s major roads have been deemed “safe and clear.”

Only then is City Hall supposed to free its fleet of snowplows to begin clearing side streets.

That’s usually how it works — but not always, according to a Chicago Sun-Times analysis of city “Plow Tracker” data for the last two big snowstorms that shows the streets on which three aldermen live appeared to get special attention.

The biggest exceptions to the rule were the visits from Streets and San crews to Ald. Edward Burke’s Southwest Side block during the 19-inch blizzard in early February and again during the lake-effect snowfall a couple of weeks ago.
Now is a good time to re-propose cutting the City Council in half, but we need someone bigger to propose it, like Kass. How about it John?

Rahm was too busy to issue an order to adhere to City law? Right.

It would take me 90 seconds to tell my secretary to issue that order and to have garbage truck crews submit a list of every location that had more than four cans behind it. Invoices and citations would follow.

Who is THAT busy? He saves at least three or four whole minutes a day by running red lights.

Just heard an attack-commercial against Garcia. Oooooh, he inherited property that had a tax break on it and when it was discovered, he paid back the shortfall. Bad guy, that Chuy.

But Rahm Emanuel's HOME, the one where the wedding dress was conveniently forgotten, was claimed as a charitable organization and wasn't on the tax rolls AT ALL?

How much more uncollected? But you send out your nazi like revenue dept to the Amish wards to write tickets for anything on their vehicles, no matter how minor, things a copper would not burden taxpayers for doing! How much of our money have you given away? From handouts paying off frivolous lawsuits to people that are the takers in this city, to pathetic bike lanes that really impede traffic, from how many millions in cost overruns to that Daley park, to giving a private mediocre school that will draw no one to the city DePaul, to trying to get obama library and make the taxpayers pay for something that for example the President Bush Library was paid by his foundation no taxpayer money used, the hidden TIF money, could go on and on, maybe the young kids you have advising you that used mom and dads money spending money tha s not theirs rubbed off on you!

Now fund the pension, and do the right moral thing!

"Emanuel acknowledged that he hasn’t gotten around to making the change..."

Why are minor administrative problems regarding garbage pickups coming across the Mayor's desk?

WTF we pay all these other people to do?

Proves that there sure are a lot of unnecessary city employees, doesn't it?

Oh. Who owns the various "ineligible multi-unit buildings" that are getting free scavenger service? Hmm.

Free garbage pickup and now rahm wants no tax zones in certain areas, free financing obviously compliments of fleeced taxpayers, no state no real estate no taxes at all why not open a business here? Would hurt other businesses that pay taxes forcing them to leave the city also can you spell desperation?

A lot of that free garbage pick up is due to connections.. Alderman Saurez was always rumored to collected money from building owners to get city service. How many others sold this too?

Why stop at reducing city counsel members? Shouldn't we eliminate all excess (redumbdent) government administrations including precints, wards, townships, counties and even states. Think of the money (salaries and pensions) being paid to worthless legislators and administrators that could be used to pay for the pensions of the workers.

Cutting the city council in half is a great idea, but could only be accomplished by a binding referendum or a state law. The alderpersons would never vote for this. Don't forget, they pension is much better then any city employee and they get a 3% compounded annual increase unlike the cops and fireman. Look at the ward boundaries. It is hard to describe them as they snake through the city sometimes only one block wide. The 2nd ward runs almost the entire width of the city!! There would be arguments about race and ethnic background. Who would draw new ward boundaries? The arguments would take years. People have been calling for new police district boundaries for years and that has not been accomplished because of political wrangling. first, lets hear pension reform for the alderman with cuts in % and the elimination of the compounded increase.

Has any of the others reading this blog asked the question why does the city pay for lighting of religious buildings throughout city?

I live in 16 and have 5 buildings with city lights attached to city light poles lighting the private property.

I work Northside and have 6 buildings with lights mounted on city light poles lighting private buildings.

So city is paying to illuminate private buildings. Why?

After the last primary, CDOT, and anyone running for election, would be better served by putting small, plow-equipped vehicles on the side streets with the others. Businesses can't vote but residents can. What good are clear arterial streets if you can't get your car to them ?

Rahm's house has more city garbage cans behind it than any other house on the block or in the zip code. I look at them every day from the front seat of a Tahoe while I have my coffee and egg McMuffin. They are very convenient too.

You don't 'have' these buildings. You know of them, or you see them, or you can point them out. If you HAVE all these buildings, you shouldn't be wasting your time on this blog.

Now that we 'have' that out of the way, why not just list the addresses, so we can figure out what the hell you're really talking about?

-------------------------------
I watched this and it is VERY true. They say 95,000 moved out last year. No jobs. High taxes and nothing to show for it.

This is bad for the tax base. The people moving out aren't welfare rats. THAT would be a good thing.

The people moving out are people with degrees and skill sets that can get good jobs. (and pay taxes)

Politicians are clueless here.

Instead of catering to those just wanting entitlements, they should be focusing on building AND maintaining a solid tax base.

Otherwise, who is going to pay all these bloated pensions?

We OVERPAY in taxes here to fund the corruption, but when more people who work move out, who is left to pay the bills?

Better re-name Chicago: Chitroit. Or should it be spelled Shitroit?

Slow down cowboy. Its not over yet
Tribune poll shows Rahm has a double digit lead. Today may tell the story when Chuy lays out his plans on how he is going to pay for all his promises. Strange that as he rings up all his endorsements, his numbers go down.
Not taking sides, but those politicians that endorsed him all are for entitlements, not paying into our pension. Karen Lewis endorsed him and she is the union leader of the CPS and they have received every year, the maximum amount allowed by law increase in the property tax level, I believe 7%. Worked the westside for years and they believe the government has plenty of money, just keep giving more entitlements. Chuy was a state senator, what was his record there and why is he not a state senator now?

The dirty tricks have begun. The poll was ANNOUNCED today, but was conducted BEFORE the endorsements occurred.

Go to Wiki if you want a thumbnail sketch of Chuy Garcia. It's an eye-opener. No dirt, just a guy who put his nose to the ground and kept working hard and pushing forward.

A guy who was occasionally in the right place at the right time, but successful enough to get re-elected and re-elected by a bunch of people who thought he was doing a good job.

So, Rahm has to reach pretty far to smear this guy. One way to hurt him is to declare Rahm's 'way ahead' in some undefined poll taken before three critical endorsements occurred.

I am a retired senior citizen and I am voting for Rahm. He is the only hope, for the next four years, to save this city from financial ruin. Garcia makes lots of promises to get the vote of the uninformed, promises that he cannot keep and he knows it. I hear a lot of conversation about hidden money in TIF funds. There is some cash there but not enough. The city is in financial trouble and the bond companies acknowledged such. Even Garcia says so as does Rauner. Everybody but the conspiracy theorists.
