Lose the Stickers

A bit of advice in one of the comment sections this weekend:
  • The F. O. P. medallions, police hat bands, police memorial plates, all serve one purpose in this day in age. They make you a target at the worst time, when you're off duty.
And if you're parked somewhere away from your car, it makes the car the subject of spit, flats, keys, or busted windows. We hear a story almost weekly now about someone's parked car getting fucked up. It's a sad state, but you've seen what's going on in this country. You are a target by dint of the uniform you wear and by the decals and such you display on your property.

Take the necessary precautions.

I had a medallion on my car for the first 2-3 years on the job. Realized it was better to be anonymous and took it off 15 years ago. To this day I see clown after clown with either the medallion, hat band, sticker, license plate and/or license plate holder on their car. Some exceptionally retarded asshats feel the need to have all these displayed simultaneously. For what? Nobody gives a shit you're the police. Quietly, be proud of who you are on the job, that's fine. But this certainly isn't the societal climate to let anyone who doesn't know you know you are the police.

That is all.

One fop sticker in the windshield is ok, but you have these goofs that put the hatband, ten old fop stickers in the windshield, a fop medalion and anything else they can think of to tell the world they're the police. Meter maids don't care so who are you trying to impress.

Amen! Been saying this for years. You're just asking for problems with all that nonsense on your car. I see guys pulling into the lot with a window sticker, hatband, medallion ticket book on the dashboard and memorial plates then get out wearing a baseball jersey over there uniform, you know, so no one knows they're the police. And stop saying you only put on a medallion so your wife doesn't get a ticket, tell her to slow down and take that thing off your car.

That said, this is the primary reason why I don't put any stickers, plate frames, special plates, etc. on my car or my property.

There used to be a time where it was OK to express one's self and show pride in one's service and accomplishments.

Now it's just asking for trouble.

I haven't displayed anything on my car in at least 10 years, but in all seriousness, what was the actual reasoning the FOP provided for originally issuing the FOP medallions and stickers? Was it legitimately meant to help show support for the FOP and police, or has it always been nothing more than a tool to try and help us attain a bit of professional courtesy?

I'm amazed that people still drive around with the hat band on the rear view mirror. That's the dumbest thing ever!! I compare that to a short guy driving a Hummer or an old due driving a Porche or Corvette...overcompensation for certain "shortcomings." The only sticker I have is St. Jude's.

I have said it many times to my colleagues who have the FOP decals, police stars, etc. to get rid of it. A coworker's daughter was fucked with by some piece of shit in Kenosha, WI. She drove the family car that had the police insignia and the offender pointed a gun at her while she was driving and shot a round. Thankfully the bullet did not hurt her as both were moving at a high rate of speed on the road. Get rid of that shit.

On a related note, get rid of that Facebook, Myspace, Google Plus or any other social network. Why on earth would you plaster photos of yourself, your kids, wife, mom, dad and other close friends? What the fuck are you thinking? Even if you filter it so only your friends can see your posts there are ways around it. The bad guys will find such a way. Some idiots at work even think they can change their Facebook name and be slick (i.e. John Smith becomes Jammin Samth). Nope idiots, they can still find you. Also they can take a photo of you while at work and then some sophisticated software program can match the photo they took with the profiles. In my unit 70% of the officers are on Facebook. Not smart.

As a civilian, I think it is outrageous that someone would choose to do harm to a police officer or to damage their vehicle. All of that disdain would quickly be erased if when someone is in need of the police.

The other side of the issue is that if you choose to prominently display on your personal vehicle a license plate that clearly advertises that you are a CPD sergeant (driving a silver Mercedes small SUV), please don't randomly change lanes at 50 mph and run red lights on northbound State street around 39th on the way to work at Headquarters at 9:00 a.m. It is very dangerous and gives the responsible police a bad name.

I thank the CPD for their work in a difficult environment.

There's a bunch of city agencies writing tickets and enjoy the opportunity to write a copper with identifying police stickers. Don't give any of the FOP stickers to family members, for they maybe the next victim in the anti-police atmosphere. What a few of us have been doing; we carry the small flag's that you can hang off your rearview mirror. I carry three in my glovebox; the afro flag, Mexican flag, and the Puerto Rican. Whatever is appropriate that's the flag I use. The other day I had to park my personal vehicle near Division and Ashland and used the PR Flag. GM, Ford, And Others Want to Make Working on Your Own Car Illegal

April 22, 2015

"One of the inherent rights of owning a vehicle is the ability to get on one’s backside — a wrench in one hand and a grease rag in the other, and just tinker...

"General Motors — the same company responsible for 87 deaths related to faulty ignition switches...wants to take that right away from you citing safety and security issues. Along with a few other big names.

"It’s called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). It’s been around since 2000 and started as anti-Internet piracy legislation...The general premise is that unlike cars of the past, today’s vehicles are so advanced and use such a large amount of software and coding in their general makeup, altering said code could be dangerous and possibly even malicious.

"Listing the vehicle as a “mobile computing device,” the law would hypothetically protect automakers from pesky owners looking to alter any sort of technology in the vehicle that relates to the onboard computer. Flashing your ECU would be a big no no, which could also lead to all sorts of problems for aftermarket shops.

"What GM, and even tractor companies like John Deere, argues is that you, as an owner, don’t actually own your car. Rather, you’re sort of just borrowing it for an extended amount of time and paying for the rights to use the technology.

"According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, John Deere argued that “letting people modify car computer systems will result in them pirating music through the on-board entertainment system.”

"That’s right— pirating music. Through a tractor."

Truthfully it serves no prupose to put police anything on your vehicle. Even if nobody messes with it you still advertise who you are and people expect things when your the police or they expect you to act a certain way. I enjoy being myself and not having police emblems on my vehicle. I still have a Star and ID should there be a problem or get pulled over.

There is a group of us that do not display anything that would identify us as the police on our personal vehicles. I hope this can save someone from the headache of having someone fucking up your property.

THe drapping of a checkered police band around a rear view mirror has irked me for years, and it is a part of the police uniform that is not supposed to be used by anyone but the police, yes police do give them and buy them to give to friends, but I believe some uniform stores sell them to civilians, When I was working I sent an e mail to FOP president asking him to put something out discouraging the practice of police officers displaying this crap, the reply was, well you are a Sgt. get a number on them for improper display of something around the mirro. BULLSHIT

Memorial plates are exactly that a memorial to police officers. No fucking way am I gonna take em off. I gladly pay the extra money so it can go towards the memorial foundation for my fallen brothers and sisters. My wife drives her own car and has no stickers, placards or anything else identifying her car. I'll be dammed if I let some shit bags dictate what I put on mine. And it's just a fucking car. I have insurance. I'll get another one if I need to. I've noticed that people with police shit all over their cars are also the same people that like doing traffic stops in their personal cars on the way home. I don't bring attention to myself off duty and it's worked just fine. Stay safe everyone!!!

I agree. Many years ago having a sticker on your car gave you a small degree of courtesy when parking. Not anymore. Those days are long over. Now all these stickers do is identify you as a police officer and make your car a target for damage or theft. I do not identify myself for any reason. I like the comment someone posted, " Run silent, run deep". It fits.

I thank the CPD for their work in a difficult
environment.

Sounds like you're describing one of the entitled ones full of self importance .

I hope the tool with the silver/gray Forerunner reads this article. A few weeks ago I was heading out to Orland to visit family and I was on 135th going west bound and here comes a silver forerunner riding my ass and no directionals to change lanes and speeding. Get to the light at 135th and Cicero as I approach, I see the CPD plate holder, the medallion, and the FOP stickers in the window. Pulled up next to him and being the sunny warm day that it was, he had his UNIFORM shirt on with the sleeve rolled up and arm hanging out the window so you made sure to notice he is the police. Very stupid and green thing to do, especially riding through the burbs. Take the stickers and accoutrements off your car, and for goodness sake, put the obligatory jersey on to cover your shirt unless you change out off it at work. You're asking for trouble and if someone doesn't like your horse shit driving they could easily call and get a CR on you. You have just advertised that you're CPD. Be smart about what you do off duty.

I've never displayed the FOP medallion, but the Memorial and FOP plates I proudly display. I'm not changing them for the gangbangers and shitbirds after almost 20yrs on the job. Keep your guns ready to go, and don't be afraid to use them. Problem with the police today is, we don't kill enough people every year. Sao Paulo Brazil police kill 1000 people a year. All departments nationwide here kill maybe 400 a year. We are too hesitant. Like that cop in Ohio that couldn't pull the trigger on that murder suspect.

Once pulled over the POS with an FOP medallion on back. Namecheck revealed him to be a gang member, caution alert, prior parolee, etc. so i locked him up for impersonating the police (see the FOP book on that one). a month later, pull over another guy with the FOP medallion. said his brother gave it to him. dude had felony-type drugs in his car. charged him with the pcs, poc, and impersonating the police by displaying a FOP medallion.

The moral here is that the only people who really care about the FOP medallion and FOP stickers on the car are other police officers. Never let a car pass just because it has the FOP medallion. Pull it over. If they are not the police, and the car is in their name, conduct further investigation. you never know what you might find.

And if you are allowing family members who are crooked to drive their cars with your FOP medallion on them, shame on you.

In this day and age, if you are driving in a such a manner that you get pulled over, you can show your I.D. and badge, be respectful to the one in uniform, and you will get your courtesy.

I refer to FOP Medallions as tracer rounds. The VC used to shoot at the origins of the tracer rounds and kill US Army and Marine soldiers as they knew where they were at who they were.

Also when I worked in 007 years ago a PPO's husband got into on the Dan Ryan Exp and flipped off another driver and basically she called it in that the driver waved a gun as she knew the car was owned by a cop. SURE enough the PPO almost got fired over it but the SGT vouched for her gun's whereabouts as she was at work with the only gun!

The keying of P.O.'s cars has become a gang initiation.

That incredibly dumb designed poorly built, open to all 10th District Station has to have a squad car sit on each of it two parking lots.

Not too long ago officers cars were deeply gouged with gang graffiti, some so badly they were almost totaled cosmetically. Try driving your kids to school in a car wearing all those gang scars.

While we are at it.

Hey Anita...

If some Redneck, NAZI, KKK member or any other white fool did some of that crap to an African/American's car... OR

A Gay/Lesbian/Transvestite/Transsexual....OR

A Jewish/Muslim/Sheik/Hindu/ or whatever religious minority...

If that fool proudly said he did it because he hated what minority the victim was we could get HATE CRIME charges approved.

But if the victim is a P.O., of the family of a P.O., he could chisel “DEATH TO PIGS!" all over your car and the state’s attorney would say that only means he does not like pork products.

Show me an ASA with the balls to approve those charges or a Street Deputy would do an override.

The HUEY P. NEWTON GUN CLUB stages open carry marches with their black BDUs and carrying their assault weapons. The chant “Oink! Oink! Bang! Bang! What do we want Dead Cops! When do we want it NOW!” If violence did erupt from those people and police died as a result would any ASA say that that was premeditation. I doubt it.

How Google is endangering police officers

By David A. Clarke Jr. and Jonathan Thompson

4/26/2015 10:06:00 AM

I read this, then went to the actual web site and had a look.

Centered the map on Madison/Central where there is heavy activity -- no locations of any police shown. Just changing color codes for heavy traffic areas with time estimates to drive the stretch, and pothole reports. Rush hour-type stuff, hardly a thing at other times.

This is not some kind of automatic police locator. Nothing goes up on the map unless an individual user happens to take the trouble to post it there, and you have to be signed in on an account. 10,000 people must have seen a police car somewhere, but who cares? Most are just trying to get somewhere.

I think the article and the "threat" are more than a little overblown. That happens sometimes.

X. Xxxxxx, P.O. Box 12345 Etc..

Drivers License to station.

Been doing that for over forty years

And that is against general orders to have your drivers license registered to the station. Surprised you didn't ever get nailed.

While I don't agree with vandalism, lets be real! The hatbands & medallions are there strictly to garner preferential treatment. Tickets are rarely given to such adorned vehicles.

4/26/2015 01:15:00 PM<<<

From police yes, from Department of Revenue they may actually look for those cars. If the revenuers write so many tickets in their first two hours they can go home or spend the rest of the day shopping so anyone is fair game to them.

The sign for a Dept. or Revenue "Meter Maid" use to be a bag of M&Ms in the windshield.

Stay away from Social media. I do not represent being the police off duty. Oh and those stickers just make us targets. Be safe.

Why would any law enforcement officer want to be identified as the police when they are off duty? What purpose would that serve?

4/26/2015 11:03:00 AM

Thats an easy one:

Immature
Conceited
Sense of Entitlement
Grandios
Munchhousen Syndrome
Delusional about Power

I work the courts in a northern suburb. You guys would be shocked to see the number of deputies that get off work and go home in full uniform uncovered. I couldn't believe it when I first saw it.

I cant stand the ones that wear their county shirts and a shoulder holster while mowing the lawn

Horseshit. Shiftwork is 7 hours with 1 hour paid much and 2 15 minute Union breaks for my co-workers at Finance.

We don't actively target vehicles with City Cop or Firefighter union stickers or decals.

We don't get a 'go home early with a full days pay" because we write 50 or 60 or 150 tickets in a shift.

For example...

I worked in Portage Park last week on my Famous Bike. From Tuesday thru Friday I averaged 100 tickets a day..and ended the week with 525 ( I was in Edgewater on Monday).

You want to know what Bonus I got? A Nice Job from my superiors and a What are you going to do for us next week question.

Parker or ANOV's or Mover books on the Dash of your personal vehicle is the Height of Arrogance. I get home from work...my parker book, my badge, my gear; go into my office...and stay there until my next shift. Hat bands on the rearview mirror is also moronic IMO. Not to mention the simple fact that for all of you that hand those out to family..I seem to recall that it is ILLEGAL for a non-Police Officer to possess Police Gear in this Shity and County.

If you get caught doing that and your living out of the city...your screwed.

If your doing it as a family safety measure...IAD doesn't give a shit.

Before retiring, came across several FF plates and it wasn't FireFighters with that plate. The law should mandate that be the persons profession and also nixing the part timers too!

4/27/2015 08:37:00 AM

Idiot. Those are Memorial Plates. You get those because you Support them.

Now....Military plates are different as we all should know. You have to have been in to qualify for them.

I have a Chicago Police Memorial plate on my car. Obviously am not a cop due to the bike I ride during my shift.

I take these off bangers cars every few months.
The numbers are scratched off so i can't track them back to the owner.

I use the ticket book in rear window.

The hat band is usually officers goofy family members. I keep them and tell them to have the officer call me at the district. guess what i never have received a call.

So, you steal people's hat bands?

HEY DUMB ASS... the order changed back a few years ago, so you can once again can use the station as your adress. In fact you have to have a form signed by your commanding officer, that you take with you to the secretary of state to have it changed. SO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT BEFORE YOU POST STUPID COMMENTS QUOTING GENERAL ORDERS. Ignorant people like you arewhy I usually avoid reading the comment section.

If people need to be warned not to display you're the police but still do it and get their cars vandalized they deserve it. It has nothing to do with pride or fearlessness it has only to do with commonsense! Unfortunately, commonsense isnt so common these days!
