Sergeants Made

Thirty-one is certainly an odd number for a promotional class:
  • Allen, J 020
    Banks, Y 142/123
    Collins, T 114
    Crawford, C 002/376
    Desmond, J 004
    Glenke, J 022
    Gugger, G 002
    Guswiler, N 189
    Hawkins, T 015
    Julian, T 001/124
    Kennedy, B 022
    Kochanny, P 002
    Medina, J 010/116
    Nicpoin, A 017/211
    Nowak, M 011
    O'Keefe D 312
    Olsen, N 004
    Parizanski, J 018
    Perez, A 025
    Perez, A 024
    Pickett, D 003
    Putrow, J 009
    Schmitz, P 189
    Schnoor, K 116
    Schultz, E 011
    Steinbrenner, R 005
    Stevens, M 010
    Utz, J 014
    Vanoourek, J 014
    Vargas, J 014
    Wasielewski C 007
So who was the 31st who couldn't be left out of the first class? Because we certainly wouldn't expect another class for at least a year now.

This is odd indeed. Why only 31 especially when you just took 24 Sgt. and made them Lieutenants. You bolstered the Sgt. ranks by 7? Why bother? It seems like this is a post election public relations move by the Mayor, gearing up to really fight crime this summer. Or McLoose-lips was spouting off on the radio the other day and said a Sgt. class is starting and then had to scramble and put one together to save face.

Anonymous 5th Floor Sgt said...

You're 100% right., 31 does seem like an odd number for a class. But it's not that weird when you do math CPD-style. The 5th floor was told that they could make 60 new Sgts this year. However, there wasn't time to get new merit interviews done and still have these new white-shirts on the street before summer. So, they compromised. Class of 31 now (all off the list) with a second class of 29 to be announced later this year. But wait, you didn't think that merit was dead did you? The second class will take up those merit picks that class #1 left on the table. Class 2 will be 11 list and 18 merit making the total merit selection rate for both classes exactly 30%.

It's amazing what happens to a list when merit is limited. Not sure of percentage used here, but look at all the names that made it from actual patrol districts compared to the special units. Am I mistaken or did not one detective make the first class, they are historically given one merit spot per area.

About 90 percent of these comments mention the word merit. Or if it isn't merit it's about a study group. This job has and will always be this way do deal with it and quit whining about it. I'm sure you knew what you were signing up for when you got a city job. I retired after 25 years, no merit, just a patrolman. Who cares? You make good money and you can work or not work. So it's a pretty good job if you think about it. Yes I've complained to fellow officers about things but you tell me another job out there that pays this much whether you work hard or not. These young kids on this job talk too much and complain too damn much. Go to roll call, listen to the bs, sign out your car and have fun with your buddies. That's what the best thing that police work had to offer.

I am sorry to tell you, but once you put on a white shirt, it is a completely different ball game. In sergeant school they teach you first and foremost, you are a supervisor. You are not a buddy or a friend. You as a supervisor have duties and responsibilities. If you don't carry out your duties and responsibilities then you will put your pay check in trouble. Sorry, I have a mortgage to pay and kids to support. I have a job to do. If you as a blue shirt want to avoid trouble, then don't get into trouble in the first place.

Actually that's not the worse "you don't make it"

The worse is the time that your family cannot make up. It takes time to study, go to classes, and take the test. It takes money to spend the night at McCormick place overnight so that your fresh. It takes money when you burn comp time to study. All so a connected person with less knowledge gets promoted because of a poorly graded test or clout. FU buddy. Some people sailed through that test 7 ways to Sunday because they studied and received a score +400. Other people didn't even finish the last 2 questions on the test or answer the SWAT question and they are under 200. Your a jerk for maintaining that honor should be directed toward a flawed system.

It's not just about the bs merit process this dept has. It's the fact that only a certain few get to be in "special study groups". For the poor schmucks who paid over 1,000 dollars for Bernstein it must really suck. It must really suck to have a glimmer of hope that it's actually legit and then get trumped by people who can memorize test questions well. As soon as you wake up and realize what dept you work for you'll feel better. CLOUT RULES in Chicago. Always has and always will.

If they plan on eliminating an entire watch by switching to a 2 shift schedule, then why do we need more sergeants and lieutenants?

4/09/2015 12:56:00 PM

Once and for all, the 2 shift schedule does not increase manpower. It actually decreases manpower since there are 3 DOG's that are RDO per day. With the 2 shifts, there are still at least 6 different rolls calls (3 for the day shift and 3 for the night shift). The 2 shift schedule does reduce OT (court and extensions of tour) though, and it may eliminate the need for VRI.

OT: How does PO/Nurse MM in the Medical Section get away with putting her first cousin Sgt DC from the Court Section on ambulatory status immediately as soon as DC goes on the medical? No phone call or visit required. It's a good scam because DC never has to stay home while on the medical. Chief Williams and Deputy Chief Shear are aware of this, and yet it continues.

Christopher Kapa was the Sgt who helped save Del Pearson's life. He was in this last Lt class and no qualms with whether this was "merit" or score. However, Del Pearson is the epitome of a "merit" Sgt and I hope they have a class this year to include him. If he does not "deserve merit" I'm not sure what any other police officer could do to attain "merit status." I'm not sure how many contact cards, movers, parkers, school absentees would matter. Oh wait it's who you know.... even above getting shot and almost dying. Be safe!

Some of the Training Academy classes are college credits and some of his military courses may have been, too. Plus, he can get 'life credit' at a bunch of local colleges. He's more than halfway there, so he (not you) should pull up his bootstraps and go check on that.

She made it her business to let everyone know that the Chief of BSS was calling her phone all day long and say it out loud just so people would know who she is connected with. I bet Chief W pulls some strings so he can bring her evil and dumb back here. I still don't believe she was smart enough to score that high unless she was studying from the test and with her connection to the Chief, that is definitely a possibility. She takes the cake from dumb, dumb and dumber. Watch and see. Commanders look out. You will be getting a second watch phone call.

Except for me. I hated midnights more. I went 28 days without sleep except for terrible sleep on my days off. I hated midnights so much because I ceased to be able to function. I worked an entire 8 hour tour of duty without a gun. Empty holster for 8 hours and didn't notice it until I put my empty gun belt in the locker.

Sgts job is not the worst job on this department. Does it suck sometimes? Sure. But being a PO, LT, Capt, etc sometimes sucks too. I've learned; if you treat your people with the respect and with dignity that they deserve, they will work for you. If you're fair and listen to them, they will work for you. If you back them up, they will work for you. If you stand up for them, they will work for you. There will always be DOGS. But sometimes, they will even work for you. I enjoy being a Sgt. Nothing is more rewarding than being able to take care of the working police. And I have the authority to do so. Congrats to the new sgts. And remember, take care of your people!

4/09/2015 05:41:00 PM"

I wrote the first post above. I retired a few years ago as a supervisor. I never said be a friend or buddy. But if you aren't smart enough to protect your people while doing your job and help make their job easier you don't deserve to be nor should be a supervisor.

I was in callback with YB. She has been light duty for most all of her police career. When the department went on that 1 year light duty BS she mysteriously went full duty that same day, now all of a sudden, the same person who could not work full duty for years for a self proclaimed irreversable back condition has not only been working full duty while she has been inside of course working here at the Academy causing chaos and dysfunction daily, but now she is fit and full duty enough to go on the street as a sergeant! The Medical Section should be looking into that. But then again, they are under Chief Williams so that will never happen. Remember, thats her boo. We all watched as he personally took her to the bathroom during the sergeants test out of a door and area for proctors only.

Know whats fucked up.I know a P.O who .while in the Marine Corp, was in charge of fellow Marines during battle. He did 3 tours and on his 3rd tour at the age of 23 was considered the old man.But -no college. You cant take the sergeants test.Your not smart enough to be a leader of men

4/09/2015 09:22:00 PM

It may suck, but the city will pay for your college-go back a lot of us have. I had kids and bills and still made arrests and went to court. It can be done.

4/10/2015 11:21:00 AM

So will the G.I. Bill!
Hopefully he will use the benefits that are afforded to him that he has earned.

Study, that's what I did. I EARNED it. I didn't sit around looking for a hand-out. I went to college after my stint in active duty. I finished up while on the job. Wife, kids, court, side jobs... the whole deal.

By the way, its CORPS, with an "S", and learn some fucking punctuation and spelling, YOU'RE making YOUR fellow Marines look bad. And Semper Fi, you rock.

YB has the worst attitude and caused every one of the polygraphers to want to leave.

4/09/2015 11:07:00 PM

Is she the same ignorant lady that yelled at, she really yelled at, the Dicks class for being too loud in the hallway? They just laughed at her. (The same hallways recruits get screamed at and do push-ups in all the time, everyday)

What did she do then, she went and cried about them to the command staff.

She thought she was Ms. Boss already. God forbid anyone who has to work for this self entitled broad.

And to all you lzy ass old timers retire you salty ass veterans. Let the real police work without you idiots living in the past and now blowing off jobs!

4/10/2015 08:44:00 AM
I almost choked this was so funny. I've seen 5 year dogs blow off CSA's and take so long getting to in-progress calls that they qualify for call-back. The only good thing is there is almost no chance of them showing up on my job. DOG is a status that transcends time on this job.

I'm sure he's a smart guy, but he should've considered that he took a guy's spot. He'll never be promoted to detective because he's starting sergeant pre service. If you're in the top 30 for the sergeant's, why take the dectective spot?

I know a time keeper in a detective Area and they said there are dicks making $150,000 a year. Why would you want to tajust wondering a 30-40,000 pay cut to work midnights in a district.

Because it doesn't count towards your pension. Lose a little now but you're gonna make up for it in the long run. Don't be so shortsighted. its all about the money baby!!!!

As a sgt. For over 17 yrs all I can say is don't get too stuck on yourself. Do ur job, help out the coppers, and be reasonable. This is just a job, if someone is doing something dangerous, tell them. If they are doing something that may get them or someone else in trouble, tell them. It's all about going home safe. Remember even a dog gets a bone. Most importantly is be fair, don't rush to judgement, get all the facts first before you go doing something you will regret or can't take back and then think about it before doing something about it. Yes you will be taken advantage of, yes you will be lied to, and yes you won't be trusted.......at first. It's up to you how your life on this job is gonna be from now on. As for me the novelty is worn off, if I can help a copper I will, I don't sweat the small stuff, I'll hold ur slip, I'll help you out. All I expect is for you to do ur job within reason, we are all over 21, and don't drink or steal on duty. And one more thing there is no such thing as consensual sex while working. Other than that have fun and stay safe.....oh and enjoy midnights on the south side .......good luck

Good to see a Schnoor name on the list. There's NEVER been a white shirt from that Family. Sgt in 020, Lt that just retired w/in past few years, and wasn't the Patriarch at least a Lt?
This mother fucking shit is all on the up & up. It's like The Sutter Family in The NHL. Oddly w/that last name theres always room in cushy Districts(don't know about The Blessed Units)enjoying a decent gig. BS(not a smart Alec attempt)in 020 was a Tact Sgt at Bel/West till he bumped bellies w/the ridiculously heavy tact Lt there plus some problems w/X/O "Iron Mike" sent BS 2 the watch. Good Dude, but I lost count on how many families on the gig automatically get promoted. We'll good luck & chalk up another for them.

Maybe his crystal ball was malfunctioning, and he didn't know they'd be making sergeants this soon. You'd pass up a detective spot just to sit around hoping they make sergeants soon? I didn't think so.

So you want the guy to pass on Detdctivd spot he earned - in the hopes that maybe a Sgts class is starting soon ? Plus he didn't take a guys spot. It's his spot. The way things work these days - had he passed on his spot on Detectives - it could have been years until Sgts class made. He made right move. The guy next on list will just have to wait until next class until they get to his earned spot b

Congratulations J. Allen! Your one of the smartest & hardest working cops that I've had the pleasure of working with. I know that you'll soon master the art of being a Sgt, just as you've mastered everything else that you've put your mind to. I hope that you are as well regarded in your new district as you are here.

Apparently Don O'Neil skipped over his ranking and refuses to allow him in the class

How is a guy in call back getting promoted? There shouldn't be any full duty people in callback and you must be full duty to be promoted-hello #32 on the list...

4/09/2015 12:48:00 AM

The place is full of full duty officers now. They are needed. Every car tells the person to call 311. Well someone has to those reports over the phone now. Manpower is needed so full duty people stay there.

Is Pearson full duty? You cannot be promoted unless you are a full duty officer. Now, I've seen a few 'light duty' people miraculously become full duty just before a new promotional list is posted...

4/10/2015 07:54:00 AM

Would you pass up a chance to be promoted if you were on limited duty? I don't know many who would. I have seen a couple of guys who were 100% legit limited go full duty to take that promotion. They are out there with their injuries still but want that promotion. Sure some are not legit. But not always how is happens.

The City has always been idiotic in promoting Detectives and then Sergeants There have always been guys who make Det, and then weeks later get promoted to Sgt. In 1996, they had about a whole bunch that fell in like that. Make Sgt first, then Detectives.... oh wait that just makes way too much sense.

Somebody needs to open an investigation regarding YB and her chief boo. She told her chief Boo she wanted the polygraph spot so he forced her on Ladner and Sprinkle. Everyone else had to go through a selection process and she did not. Then she brags that she'll be in the first class because of her boo and now she is. Didn't the Supe's driver get kicked out of the last class because the bosses tried to pull a fast one and it was discovered. Does she really get to say she didn't make it, meritoriously for the rest of her joke of a career because her boo gave her the questions to the test or is someone going to do something about this?
