Please tell me the negative to having speed and red light cameras? If every light has a count down timer on them and they make the yellow lights a second longer that is ample warning to not go through and get a ticket. Traffic laws are not enforced in chicago anyway. Easy solution not to get a ticket. Don't speed don't go through a red. Put speed cameras everywhere and a red light camera on all lights. That way you already know not to speed or drive like an asshole.

Politicians need to be sent a message as to who is really in charge. It seems as though it may take a hammer between the eyes for them to understand that. It is harsh but that's the only way. History is full of politico's who thought that they were above and better than the people. They were dealt with accordingly and things changed, then repeated.

Bull. I had meter installed two years ago and promised lower water bills for 7 years. My wife and I don't use much water and we are barely ever home. We have no leaks and take quick showers. My water bill on average is $120 every 2 months. That's not less than I was laying before. It's not drastically more, but there is no savings.

This didn't take long either. S&P threatening to drop credit rating if pension funding isn't solved.

S&P eyes Chicago credit downgrade if no pension fix this year
By: Meaghan Kilroy
Published: April 9, 2015

Chicago could lose it’s A+ credit rating if the city does not implement a plan to “substantially” fund its pension plans this year, Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services said...

“If the city fails to articulate and implement a plan by the end of 2015 to substantially fund its pension contributions, or if it substantially draws down its reserves to fund the contributions, we will likely lower the rating. This is regardless of whatever relief the state Legislature may or may not provide,” the news release said.

S&P’s announcement comes on the heels of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s re-election.

“Following Tuesday’s vote, in order to maintain its current rating, we expect the administration to address the pension and budget challenges head on by providing solutions that will support the city’s credit strengths in the near and far term,” said Helen Samuelson, S&P credit analyst, in the release.

A spokeswoman for Mr. Emanuel could not immediately be reached for comment.

Chicago faces roughly $20 billion in unfunded pension liabilities across its four funds: the $5.1 billion Municipal Employees’ Annuity & Benefit Fund, $1.4 billion Laborers’ Annuity & Benefit Fund, $3.3 billion Chicago Policemen’s Annuity & Benefit Fund and $1 billion Chicago Firemen’s Annuity & Benefit Fund.

In February, lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of a 2014 pension reform law aimed at reducing the $9.4 billion in unfunded liabilities across the Municipal and Laborers funds were put on hold pending an Illinois Supreme Court ruling on state pension reforms.

The Chicago reform law, which took effect in January, raised employee and employer contributions and reduced retiree cost-of-living adjustments for participants in the two pension funds. A status hearing on the Chicago lawsuits is scheduled for April 22.

Excluded from the 2014 law were the city’s police and fire pension funds. The city projects its required pension contributions will increase to $1.1 billion total (collected in 2016) from $478.3 million the previous year, $550 million of which is attributable to the city’s police and fire funds, said Linda Schulte, spokeswoman for the Civic Federation in an e-mail.

The Civic Federation is an independent government research organization in Chicago....

You don't need to be broke to declare bankruptcy. You just need substantially more debt than assets.

If Chicago has 1 billion in TIF but 20 billion in pension debt and 15 billion in bond debt and is having trouble meeting payroll plus debt service then it can easily go to bankruptcy court.

Ditto!

Down in Ft. Lauderdale with friends and REFUSED to drive because living in Chicago fucks you up for operating a motor vehicle where the taxpayers aren't treated as fodder for the government revenue apparatus.

Speeds on surface streets are 15 mph higher and yellow lights run 4 to 5 seconds.

Also... All the intersections we observed had a dedicated left turn signal AND lane.

Two ways to look at managing traffic flow.
Movement versus "Control."

What we saw in Ft. Lauderdale was movement.

Here in Chicago it's all about control.

No... Chicago doesn't lend itself to drastically higher surface street speeds because the vehicle operator is presumed liable in all things and there are too many monkeys with the steering wheels of 2 ton half-guided missiles in their hands anyway.

There was a report out that the City hasn't been successful in collecting the actual fines from violators. So really, what's the penalty...install more cameras where drivers have ability to pay up and increase those fines.
So if Red Light Cams are going away then there must be more Speed Cameras coming.
Rahm is gonna get your money one way or another.

4/09/2015 12:42:00 PM

Take this for what it's worth...

The biggest problem with collecting the fines is that there is no legal incentive for people to pay them in cases where the ticket (RLC, Speed Camera or Parker) is actually Legit. Parkers and Camera tickets have no legal penalty if you don't pay them. All that happens (say you have 1 RLC ticket from Chicago and live in Michigan) is it doubles after 21 days and goes to a private collections agency after whatever period of time the city waits.

At a certain point, after accruing a certain 'threshold number' of tickets (RLC, Speed Cam, Parkers) a Failure to Appear/Show Cause Bench warrant should be issued. But since this doesn't happen, there really is no incentive to pay up if you are not a city of Chicago employee or have Off Street Parking and can avoid the Boot trucks by going from garage to garage every day.

Where I grew up (in Michigan), Municipal tickets like Expired Meter or Expired Plates/Registration were not adjudicated like they are in Chicago by non-Judge ALO's. If you wanted to fight the ticket you actually had to go to a REAR court room for a hearing. Or you had to sweat getting pulled over or any other type of Police interaction.

Over half the license plates are stolen? Where's your proof? Remember we are in the proof business, it's not what you believe, it's what you can prove. I worked in the 3rd district for several years and know that isn't true. There are good people who there including several cops. You are a racist jerk.
